Climate Benefits of U.S. EPA Programs and Policies That Reduced Methane Emissions 1993-2013

Technological avenues and market mechanisms to accelerate methane and nitrous oxide emissions reductions

Strategies targeting methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions are critical to meeting global climate targets. Existing literature estimates the emissions of these gases from specific sectors, but this knowledge must be synthesized to prioritize and incentivize CH₄ and N₂O mitigation. Accordingly, we review emissions sources and mitigation strategies in all key sectors (fuel extraction and combustion, landfilling, agriculture, wastewater treatment, and chemical industry) and the role of carbon markets in reducing emissions. The most accessible reduction opportunities are in the hydrocarbon extraction and waste sectors, where half (>3 Gt-CO₂e/year) of the emissions in these sectors could be mitigated at no net cost. In total, 60% of CH₄ emissions can be mitigated at less than $50/t-CO₂. Expanding the scope of carbon markets to include these emissions could provide cost-effective decarbonization through 2050. We provide recommendations for carbon markets to improve emissions reductions and set prices to appropriately incentivize mitigation.

A Source-Level Estimation and Uncertainty Analysis of Methane Emission in China’s Oil and Natural Gas Sector

A high-quality methane emission estimation in China’s oil and gas sector is the basis of an effective mitigation strategy. Currently, the published emission data and studies of China’s oil and gas sector only provide estimations of total emissions, which is not enough for good analysis of the trend and impact factors for the instruction of emission mitigation activities. The main problem is that published data for oil and gas infrastructure in China is incomplete, which makes it difficult to apply the conventional greenhouse gas inventory compiling method and the uncertainty estimation strategy. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a method to estimate infrastructure data using all available data, including partial data for the infrastructure, national production and consumption of oil and gas, and production and production capacity data of oil and gas enterprises, and then uses a Monte Carlo-based method to generate a source-based inventory and uncertainty analysis of methane emission for China’s oil and gas industry from 1995 to 2018. We found that methane emission increased from 208.3 kt in 1995 to 1428.8 kt in 2018. Methane emission in 2018 has an uncertainty of about ±3%. Compared to former studies, our research found that the production stage of natural gas is the main contributor, which is further driven by the growth of natural gas production. The mitigation potential introduced by technology development on methane emission remains large.

Heat-induced SIRT1-mediated H4K16ac deacetylation impairs resection and SMARCAD1 recruitment to double strand breaks

Hyperthermia inhibits DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair that utilizes homologous recombination (HR) pathway by a poorly defined mechanism(s); however, the mechanisms for this inhibition remain unclear. Here we report that hyperthermia decreases H4K16 acetylation (H4K16ac), an epigenetic modification essential for genome stability and transcription. Heat-induced reduction in H4K16ac was detected in humans, Drosophila, and yeast, indicating that this is a highly conserved response. The examination of histone deacetylase recruitment to chromatin after heat-shock identified SIRT1 as the major deacetylase subsequently enriched at gene-rich regions. Heat-induced SIRT1 recruitment was antagonized by chromatin remodeler SMARCAD1 depletion and, like hyperthermia, the depletion of the SMARCAD1 or combination of the two impaired DNA end resection and increased replication stress. Altered repair protein recruitment was associated with heat-shock-induced γ-H2AX chromatin changes and DSB repair processing. These results support a novel mechanism whereby hyperthermia impacts chromatin organization owing to H4K16ac deacetylation, negatively affecting the HR-dependent DSB repair.

Natural Gas Fugitive Leak Detection Using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle: Localization and Quantification of Emission Rate

We describe a set of methods for locating and quantifying natural gas leaks using a small unmanned aerial system equipped with a path-integrated methane sensor. The algorithms are developed as part of a system to enable the continuous monitoring of methane, supported by a series of over 200 methane release trials covering 51 release location and flow rate combinations. The system was found throughout the trials to reliably distinguish between cases with and without a methane release down to 2 standard cubic feet per hour (0.011 g/s). Among several methods evaluated for horizontal localization, the location corresponding to the maximum path-integrated methane reading performed best with a mean absolute error of 1.2 m if the results from several flights are spatially averaged. Additionally, a method of rotating the data around the estimated leak location according to the wind is developed, with the leak magnitude calculated from the average crosswind integrated flux in the region near the source location. The system is initially applied at the well pad scale (100–1000 m2 area). Validation of these methods is presented including tests with unknown leak locations. Sources of error, including GPS uncertainty, meteorological variables, data averaging, and flight pattern coverage, are discussed. The techniques described here are important for surveys of small facilities where the scales for dispersion-based approaches are not readily applicable.
