Production of Biodiesel from Recycled Grease Trap Waste: A Review

Management of fat, oil and grease (FOG) is crucial for the recovery of renewable resources and the protection of sewer systems. This study aims to identify the potential quantities and qualities of FOG that can be acquired through optimised grease separator (GS) management approaches in hotels and restaurants during seasonal tourism. A technical survey of 20 GS from hotels and restaurants in the federal state of Tyrol, Austria was conducted. The findings revealed that 55 % of the GS were in poor condition, often due to infrequent maintenance and limited operator's knowledge. The FOG layer quality and quantity was monitored over three years and physicochemical parameters including total residue, volatile solids, total organic carbon, lipid content, and biomethane yield, were analysed. An optimised management approach, which involved up to 4 GS emptying per season, revealed a significant increase in FOG quantity for the majority of the inspected establishments, with an overall doubling of the acquired FOG volume. Based on these results, the energy potential of GS is presented in three potential management scenarios. The energy recovered from GS increased by 246 %. This highlights the importance of proper GS management in the hospitality sector, which can play a critical role in promoting environmental sustainability and renewable energy production.

Valorization of fat balls and primary scum from wastewater treatment: a promising renewable lipid feedstock for biodiesel production

We investigated the potential of waste materials from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to serve as an alternative lipid feedstock for biodiesel production. The average lipid recoveries from fat balls (46.4%) and primary scum (49.5-54.5%) were higher than the lipid recovery of primary sludge (15.8-16.4%). The yield of biodiesel produced from the extracted lipids ranged from 5.7 to 20.1%. There were considerable site- and season-dependent variations in the characteristics of the lipid waste materials. Radiocarbon analysis indicated the presence of fossil-derived carbon (26.0-42.0%) in the biodiesel obtained from wastewater lipids. Finally, we estimated the potential for biodiesel production from WWTP-derived lipids; about 333.0 metric tons of biodiesel per year could be produced from fat balls and primary scum in Japan. The results indicate that lipid-rich materials from WWTPs represent a valuable alternative feedstock for biodiesel production.

The analysis of classical, polynomial regression and cubic spline mathematical models in hemp biodiesel optimization: an experimental comparison

Post-pandemic inflationist pressures, climate changes and extremes, regional conflicts, and soaring food prices caused the food crisis to increase rapidly worldwide. This global problem directs producers and researchers to use oils used as feedstock in biodiesel production effectively. In this context, it is important to assay the transesterification parameters and conduct new optimization studies to increase biodiesel yield. In this study, methyl ester was produced from hemp oil by transesterification using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Next, classical optimization study was carried out to determine the effects of catalyst amount, alcohol:oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction time variables on biodiesel yield. Secondly, the cubic spline mathematical model (CSMM) and polynomial regression mathematical model (PRMM) were applied to the first data of this optimization. Among these optimization methods, the utmost biodiesel yield registered was 96.115% at hemp seed oil (HSO):methanol molar ratio of 5.59:1, catalyst concentration of 0.531 wt%, reaction temperature of 42.5 °C, reaction time of 62.1 min, and agitation intensity of 600 rpm at PRMM. Some vital fuel properties obtained from HSO biodiesels as a result of three optimizations satisfied the EN 14214 standard. The results illustrated that the optimal yields from CSMM and PRMM are 0.765% and 1.065% higher, respectively, according to the maximum efficiency obtained from the classical optimization. The outcomes showed that CSMM and PRMM are cost-effective, easy to handle, and promising new approaches.

The Research on Characteristics of CI Engine Supplied with Biodiesels from Brown and Yellow Grease

The effect of three kinds of fuels used to supply a diesel engine on its characteristics, fuel consumption, and emissions was studied. The fuels comprised pure diesel, a blend of diesel with 6% of methyl ester of yellow grease in the form of rapeseed oil, and a blend of diesel with methyl ester of brown grease in the form of goose fat. The chromatographic analysis was conducted for these fuels, and the results are presented. Two tests, comprising measurement of fuel consumption and engine emissions, were conducted on a vehicle with a diesel engine operating under zero load and under full load. The engine’s characteristics, including both power and torque versus speed, were determined under full engine load. The results of these tests are presented in this paper. The results indicated that the use of different methyl ester-based biodiesel blends with the same content of diesel to supply the diesel engine resulted in different fuel consumption and emissions of the engine not only in comparison to the supply of pure diesel but between biodiesels analyzed.

Waste Management in the Agri-Food Industry: The Conversion of Eggshells, Spent Coffee Grounds, and Brown Onion Skins into Carriers for Lipase Immobilization

One of the major challenges in sustainable waste management in the agri-food industry following the “zero waste” model is the application of the circular economy strategy, including the development of innovative waste utilization techniques. The conversion of agri-food waste into carriers for the immobilization of enzymes is one such technique. Replacing chemical catalysts with immobilized enzymes (i.e., immobilized/heterogeneous biocatalysts) could help reduce the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability problems of existing chemically catalysed processes. On the other hand, the economics of the process strongly depend on the price of the immobilized enzyme. The conversion of agricultural and food wastes into low-cost enzyme carriers could lead to the development of immobilized enzymes with desirable operating characteristics and subsequently lower the price of immobilized enzymes for use in biocatalytic production. In this context, this review provides insight into the possibilities of reusing food industry wastes, namely, eggshells, coffee grounds, and brown onion skins, as carriers for lipase immobilization.
