Zeolite ZSM5-Filled PVDF Hollow Fiber Mixed Matrix Membranes for Efficient Carbon Dioxide Removal via Membrane Contactor

Zeolite-Based Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Ultrafiltration Membrane: Characterization and Molecular Weight Cut-Off Estimation with Support Vector Regression Modelling

Zeolite serves as a promising additive for enhancing the hydrophilicity of polymeric membranes, yet its utilization for bolstering the mechanical strength of the membrane remains limited. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were modified by incorporating various concentrations of zeolite (0.5-2 wt%) to improve not only their mechanical properties, but also other features for water filtration. Membranes with and without zeolite incorporation were fabricated via a dry-wet phase inversion technique, followed by the application of a series of characterization techniques in order to study their morphological structure, mechanical strength, and hydrophilicity. The membrane filtration performance for each membrane was evaluated based on pure water flux and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) rejection. Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) images revealed a dense, microvoid-free structure across all of the PVDF membranes, contributing to a high pristine PVDF membrane tensile strength of 14 MPa. The addition of 0.5 wt% zeolite significantly improved the tensile strength up to 19.4 MPa. Additionally, the incorporation of 1 wt% zeolite into PVDF membrane yielded improvements in membrane hydrophilicity (contact angle of 67.84°), pure water flux (63.49% increase), and high BSA rejection (95.76%) compared to pristine PVDF membranes. To further improve the characterization of the zeolite-modified PVDF membranes, the Support Vector Regression (SVR) model was adopted to estimate the molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of the membranes. A coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.855 was obtained, suggesting that the SVR model predicted the MWCO accurately. The findings of this study showed that the utilization of zeolite is promising in enhancing both the mechanical properties and separation performance of PVDF membranes for application in ultrafiltration processes.

Fabrication of graphene-oxide and zeolite loaded polyvinylidene fluoride reverse osmosis membrane for saltwater remediation

Incorporation of inorganic and organic materials in polymer has contributed well towards the development of advanced reverse-osmosis membranes; with greater permeation, and salt rejection potential. We are reporting, Zeolite/GO/PVDF based thin-film composite membranes that were successfully synthesized by solution casting process, an eco-friendly, low-cost, and biocompatible technique. PVDF membranes modified with different ratios of GO/Zeo (0.03, 0.05 and 0.07) were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA, and DSC. Membranes were then tested for its potential for water permeation and salt rejection abilities. As prepared membranes owe better pore-distribution, a moderate degree of crystallinity and high absorption capability that is highly needed for micro-filtration phenomena used for desalination of saline water. The modified membranes exhibited enhanced water permeability up to 28.9 L/m²h as compared to pure PVDF membrane having water permeability flux of 15.6 L/m²h. Salt-rejection ability was found increasing for the membranes (up to 98%) modified with different concentration of GO/Zeo, as compare to pure PVDF membrane (82%). During water permeation and salt rejection studies, no deleterious impact was noted for modified PVDF membranes. This development will entail an efficient approach to furnish high-level performance reverse-osmosis membranes, with greater osmotic-pressure bearing capacity and higher stability.

Superhydrophobic Surface-Constructed Membrane Contactor with Hierarchical Lotus-Leaf-Like Interfaces for Efficient SO2 Capture

An organic-inorganic polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylidene fluoride-silica (PVDF/PVDF-SiO₂) mixed matrix membrane contactor is fabricated via a facile and efficient hydrophobic modification method. The solubility parameters of the PVDF particle are precisely regulated, the PVDF particles are blended with SiO₂ nanoparticles to form PVDF-SiO₂ suspension, and then the suspension is introduced onto the surface of the PVDF substrate by an in situ spin coating strategy. The PVDF particles are partly etched and incorporated to construct the adhesive PVDF-SiO₂ core-shell layer on the PVDF substrate, which results in a more stable PVDF-SiO₂ coating layer on the substrate. The surface structure is precisely regulated by changing the etching morphology of PVDF particles and amount of doped PVDF and SiO₂ particles, forming an integrated porous PVDF-SiO₂ layer and constructing hierarchical lotus-leaf-like interfaces. The resultant PVDF/PVDF-SiO₂ membrane contactors display the relatively regular distribution of pore size with ∼420 nm and excellent hydrophobic property with a water contact angle of ∼158°, which noticeably lightens wetting phenomena of membrane contactors. The SO₂ absorption fluxes can reach as high as 1.26 × 10^-3 mol·m^-2·s^-1 using 0.625 M of ethanolamine (EA) as liquid absorbent. The high stability of the SO₂ absorption flux test indicates the excellent interface compatibility between the PVDF-SiO₂ coating layer and the PVDF substrate. The versatile organic-inorganic layer exhibits super hydrophobic property, which prevents wetting of membrane pores. In addition, the membrane mass transfer resistance (H/K_m) and membrane phase transfer coefficient (K_m) are explored.

Nanocomposite Membranes for Liquid and Gas Separations from the Perspective of Nanostructure Dimensions

One of the critical aspects in the design of nanocomposite membrane is the selection of a well-matched pair of nanomaterials and a polymer matrix that suits their intended application. By making use of the fascinating flexibility of nanoscale materials, the functionalities of the resultant nanocomposite membranes can be tailored. The unique features demonstrated by nanomaterials are closely related to their dimensions, hence a greater attention is deserved for this critical aspect. Recognizing the impressive research efforts devoted to fine-tuning the nanocomposite membranes for a broad range of applications including gas and liquid separation, this review intends to discuss the selection criteria of nanostructured materials from the perspective of their dimensions for the production of high-performing nanocomposite membranes. Based on their dimension classifications, an overview of the characteristics of nanomaterials used for the development of nanocomposite membranes is presented. The advantages and roles of these nanomaterials in advancing the performance of the resultant nanocomposite membranes for gas and liquid separation are reviewed. By highlighting the importance of dimensions of nanomaterials that account for their intriguing structural and physical properties, the potential of these nanomaterials in the development of nanocomposite membranes can be fully harnessed.

Nonprecious bimetallic (Mo, Fe)-N/C nanostructures loaded on PVDF membrane for toxic CrVI reduction from water

Nonprecious bimetallic molybdenum and iron embedded into N-doped carbon (MoFe-NC) hybrids were designed and fabricated by pyrolysis of mixed precursors and then immobilized on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films via a phase inversion process to obtain novel catalytic membranes (MoFe-NC@PVDF) for toxic Cr^VI reduction. The catalytic membranes are highly active for aqueous Cr^VI reduction using formic acid (FA) as a sacrificial electron donor under mild conditions. The results demonstrated that the parameters of synthesis process can efficiently adjust the morphology and textural properties of the as-synthesized MoFe-NC@PVDF membrane, and thus have a significant impact on the catalytic behavior. Cr^VI reduction rates significantly increased with increasing FA concentrations (0.234-0.936 M) and reaction temperature (5-35℃), but declined with the increase of Cr^VI concentrations (5-40 mg/L) and pH values of solution (1.87-4.62). Mo-N_x, Fe-N_x, and C-N_x are the active sites, boosting the dissociation of FA molecules into active H* species for effective catalytic reduction of Cr^VI. The catalytic PVDF membrane exhibited distinct porous structure and numerous interaction sites, which not only stabilized metallic nanoparticles, but also promoted mass transfer across the membrane. This cost-effective catalytic membrane provides a new approach toward the treatment of Cr^VI-containing water.

Mixed matrix membrane contactor containing core-shell hierarchical Cu@4A filler for efficient SO2 capture

Achieving high flux membrane contactor is significantly important for hazardous gas removal. In this study, we prepared poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based mixed matrix membrane contactor (MMMC) that contained a core-shell hirarchical Cu@4A composite filler (Cu@4A). On one hand, the Cu@4A regulated the physical structure of MMMC, which enhanced gas permeation and thus resulted in the increment of physical SO₂ absorption flux. On the other hand, Cu@4A changed the chemical environment of MMMC by remarkably increased SO₂ facilitated transport sites, which elevated SO₂ concentration around Cu@4A by the enhancement of adsorption and oxidation of SO₂, resulting in the increase of chemical SO₂ absorption flux. Moreover, the copper nanosheets on 4A helped to construct facilitated transport pathways along the Cu@4A fillers at polymer-filler interface. The results showed that Cu@4A loaded MMMC exhibited increased SO₂ removal efficiency and SO₂ absorption flux compared with PVDF control membrane. Specifically, the M₁₀⁴⁰ MMMC loaded with 40 wt% Cu@4A and PVDF concentration 10 wt% exhibited the highest SO₂ removal efficiency and SO₂ absorption flux, which was up to 73.6% and 9.1 × 10^-4 mol·m^-2·s^-1 at the liquid flow rate of 30 L/h. Besides, the overall SO₂ mass transfer coefficient (K_o) and membrane mass transfer resistance (H/K_m) were investigated.
