Photocatalytic Polysulfone Hollow Fiber Membrane with Self-Cleaning and Antifouling Property for Water Treatment

Improving selectivity and antifouling properties of a PES hollow fibre membrane with a photo-enzyme for the removal of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole

A multifunctional hollow fibre was prepared by the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) with laccase (Lac) and phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (P-gC3N4) for the removal of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole. The properties and structure elucidation of the prepared membranes were evaluated using contact angle analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), correlative light electron microscopy (CLEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), tensile strength, water-intake capacity, and pure water flux. The modified multifunctional hollow fibre membranes showed increased root mean square surface roughness from 50 nm for neat PES to 104 nm, which contributed to the significantly higher water flux of 90 L.m-2h-1 compared to 54 L.m-2h-1 for pristine PES. The hydrophilicity also improved after modification as the contact angle reduced from 72° ± 1.01° to 42° ± 2.26°. The modified hollow fibre membranes showed an enhanced removal of ciprofloxacin (77%) and sulfamethoxazole (80%). Moreover, antifouling properties towards bovine serum albumin were 89% for FRR, 7% for Rr, 9% for Rir and 17% for Rt. Regeneration studies showed that the multifunctional hollow fibre membrane obtained a high removal percentage of 79% towards sulfamethoxazole after five cycles. Hence, this work proposes a new system that can be successfully utilized in the treatment of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants in water.

Biodegradable Chitosan-Based Membranes for Highly Effective Separation of Emulsified Oil/Water

Efficient separation of oil droplets from oil/water emulsions is necessary for many energy and food industrial processes and for industrial wastewater treatment. Membrane microfiltration has been explored to address this issue because it is simple to operate and low in cost. However, filtration of oil droplets with a size around or less than 1 μm is still a major challenge. Furthermore, the fabrication process for polymeric membranes often uses hazardous organic solvents and petroleum-derived and nonbiodegradable raw materials, which pose additional environmental health and safety risk. In this study, we examined the use of chitosan-based membranes to efficiently remove oil droplets with an average diameter of ∼1 μm. The membranes were fabricated based on the rapid dissolution of chitosan in an alkaline/urea solvent system at a low temperature, thus avoiding the use of any toxic organic solvent. The chitosan membranes were further modified by dopamine and tannic acid (TA). The as-prepared membrane was characterized in terms of surface morphology, pore size distribution, and mechanical strength. The membrane performance was evaluated on a custom-designed crossflow filtration system. The results showed that the modified chitosan membrane with dopamine and TA had a water flux of 230.9 LMH at 1bar transmembrane pressure and oil droplet rejection of 99%. This water flux represented an increase of more than 10 times when compared with the original chitosan membrane without modification. The study also demonstrated excellent antifouling properties of the modified membrane that could achieve near 100% water flux recovery.

Ultrafiltration treatment of wastewater contained heavy metals complexed with palygorskite

Palygorskite was applied in complexation-ultrafiltration treatment of heavy metals in wastewater under different pH and ionic strength. The results indicated that the rejection of heavy metals increased significantly with pH value, and decreased slightly with an increase of ionic strength of Na+ and Cl–. A certain concentration of NaCl significantly reduced the rejection rate of Cu2+. The rejection of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ could reach over 86.8%, 93.6% and 93.7% at pH of 7 and 0.1 mol/L NaCl. The rejection of heavy metals was severely affected by low molecular weight competing complexing agents and the effect of sodium tartrate was greater than triethanolamine. In the presence of sodium tartrate, the rejection of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ could arrive over 81.4%, 57.6% and 60.5% at pH of 7 in 20 min. Palygorskite was offered a potential complexing agent for the removal of heavy metals in wastewater at the complexation-ultrafiltration process.
