Unlocking Arene Phosphorescence in Bismuth-Organic Materials

Three novel bismuth-organic compounds, with the general formula [Bi2(HPDC)2(PDC)2]·(arene)·2H2O (H2PDC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid; arene = pyrene, naphthalene, and azulene), that consist of neutral dinuclear Bi-pyridinedicarboxylate complexes and outer coordination sphere arene molecules were synthesized and structurally characterized. The structures of all three phases exhibit strong π-π stacking interactions between the Bi-bound PDC/HPDC and outer sphere organic molecules; these interactions effectively sandwich the arene molecules between bismuth complexes and thereby prevent molecular vibrations. Upon UV irradiation, the compounds containing pyrene and naphthalene displayed red and green emission, respectively, with quantum yields of 1.3(2) and 30.8(4)%. The emission was found to originate from the T1 → S0 transition of the corresponding arene and result in phosphorescence characteristic of the arene employed. By comparison, the azulene-containing compound displayed very weak blue-purple phosphorescence of unknown origin and is a rare example of T2 → S0 emission from azulene. The pyrene- and naphthalene-containing compounds both display radioluminescence, with intensities of 11 and 38% relative to bismuth germanate, respectively. Collectively, these results provide further insights into the structure-property relationships that underpin luminescence from Bi-based materials and highlight the utility of Bi-organic molecules in the realization of organic emission.

Expedient radical phosphonylations via ligand to metal charge transfer on bismuth

Bismuth, in spite of its low cost and low toxicity, has found limited application in organic synthesis. Although the photoactivity of Bi(iii) salts has been well studied, this has not been effectively exploited in photocatalysis. To date, only a single report exists for the Bi-based photocatalysis, wherein carbon centered radicals were generated using ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) on bismuth. In this regard, expanding the horizon of bismuth LMCT catalysis for the generation of heteroatom centered radicals, we hereby report an efficient radical phosphonylation using BiCl3 as the LMCT catalyst. Phosphonyl radicals generated via visible-light induced LMCT of BiCl3 were subjected to a variety of transformations like alkylation, amination, alkynylation and cascade cyclizations. The catalytic system tolerated a wide range of substrate classes, delivering excellent yields of the scaffolds. The reactions were scalable and required low catalytic loading of bismuth. Detailed mechanistic studies were carried out to probe the reaction mechanism. Diverse radical phosphonylations leading to the formation of sp3-C-P, sp2-C-P, sp-C-P, and P-N bonds in the current work present the candidacy of bismuth as a versatile photocatalyst for small molecule activation.

Phosphorescence Properties of Boron/Bismuth Hybrid Conjugated Materials

By introducing main-group elements such as boron and bismuth to π-conjugated systems, it is possible to modify the optical properties of π-conjugated materials through orbital interactions between the orbital on the elements and π/π*-orbitals, and the heavy atom effect. Moreover, bismuth, which is the heaviest stable element, induces a significant heavy atom effect, making organobismuth compounds promising for applications as phosphorescent materials. In this study, we synthesized new room-temperature phosphorescent materials by incorporating bismuth into thiophene units. The phosphorescence properties of these materials, such as emission lifetime and wavelength, could be further controlled by combining tricoordinate boron with the thienylbismuth structures. The synthesized bismuth- and boron-containing thiophene compounds exhibited phosphorescence at room temperature in both solution and solid states. Furthermore, the introduction of boron raised the energy of the triplet state in the π-conjugated system, resulting in a blue shift of the phosphorescence wavelength. The analysis of photoluminescence properties and TD-DFT calculations revealed that the introduction of bismuth enhances phosphorescence properties, whereas the introduction of boron further promotes intersystem crossing.

Two Stable Bifunctional Zinc Metal-Organic Frameworks with Luminescence Detection of Antibiotics and Proton Conduction

Functionalized crystalline solids based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enable efficient luminescence detection and high proton conductivity, making them crucial in the realms of environmental monitoring and clean energy. Here, two structurally and functionally distinct zinc-based MOFs, [Zn(TTDPa)(bodca)]·H2O (1) and [Zn(TTDPb)(bodca)]·H2O (2), were successfully designed and synthesized using 3,6-di(pyridin-4-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TTDPa) and 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TTDPb) as ligands, in the presence of bicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2bodca). Both 1 and 2 display a three-dimensional (3D) structure with 5-fold interpenetration, and notably, 2 forms a larger one-dimensional pore measuring 17.16 × 10.81 Å2 in size. Fluorescence experiments demonstrate that 1 and 2 can function as luminescent sensors for nitrofurantoin (NFT) and nitrofurazone (NFZ) with low detection limits, remarkable selectivity, and good recyclability. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the differing sensing effects of compounds 1 and 2 and to explore potential sensing mechanisms. Additionally, at 328 K and 98% relative humidity, 1 and 2 exhibit proton conductivity values of 2.13 × 10-3 and 4.91 × 10-3 S cm-1, respectively, making them suitable proton-conducting materials. Hence, the integration of luminescent sensing and proton conductivity in monophasic 3D Zn-MOFs holds significant potential for application in intelligent multitasking devices.

Hypervalent organobismuth complexes: pathways toward improved reactivity, catalysis, and applications

Hypervalent (three-center, four-electron) bonding in organobismuth complexes has been extensively studied due to its ability to affect molecular geometry, dynamic behavior, or to stabilize the ligand scaffold. This work addresses the effects of this bonding on reactivity, catalytic activity, redox processes, and its potential applications in biosciences, materials science, and small molecule activation.

Oxidative Addition of Aryl Electrophiles into a Red-Light-Active Bismuthinidene

The oxidative addition of aryl electrophiles is a fundamental organometallic reaction widely applied in the field of transition metal chemistry and catalysis. However, the analogous version based on main group elements still remains largely underexplored. Here, we report the ability of a well-defined organobismuth(I) complex to undergo formal oxidative addition with a wide range of aryl electrophiles. The process is facilitated by the reactivity of both the ground and excited states of N,C,N-bismuthinidenes upon absorption of low-energy red light.

Efficient Europium Sensitization via Low-Level Doping in a 2-D Bismuth-Organic Coordination Polymer

A new bismuth-organic compound containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) was synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure consists of 2-D {Bi(phen)(HPDC)(PDC)}n sheets wherein the PDC ligands bridge metal centers via three unique bonding modes. The 2-D sheets are further connected through strong hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a 3-D supramolecular network. The parent compound displayed yellow photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature. Doping studies were undertaken to incorporate Eu3+ into the structure, statistically replacing Bi3+ in small quantities (1, 5, and 10 mol % Eu3+ relative to Bi3+). All three compounds displayed characteristic Eu3+ emission, with total quantum yields as high as 16.0% and sensitization efficiencies between 0.21 and 0.37 depending on the Eu3+ doping percentage.

Excited state energy landscape of phosphorescent group 14 complexes

Great progress has been achieved on phosphorescent or photoactive complexes of the Earth-abundant transition metals, while examples for phosphorescent heavy main group element complexes are rare, in particular for group 14 complexes in the oxidation state +II. The known compounds often show only weak phosphorescence with fast non-radiative deactivation. The underlying photophysical processes and the nature of the phosphorescent electronic states have remained essentially unexplored. The present combined photophysical and theoretical study on tin(ii) and lead(ii) complexes E(bpep) with the dianionic tridentate ligand bpep^2- (E = Sn, Pb; H₂bpep = 2-[1,1-bis(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethyl]pyridine) provides unprecedented insight in the excited state energy landscape of tetrel(ii) complexes. The tin complex shows green intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) phosphorescence both in solution and in the solid state. In spite of its larger heavy-atom effect, the lead complex only shows very weak red phosphorescence from a strongly distorted ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state at low temperatures in the solid state. Detailed (TD-)DFT calculations explain these observations and delineate the major path of non-radiative deactivation via distorted LMCT states. These novel insights provide rational design principles for tetrel(ii) complexes with long-lived phosphorescence.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Heavier Pnictogen Complexes

Recent success in the synthesis of π-conjugated heavier pnictogen (As, Sb, and Bi) compounds and their transition metal complexes has led to the current surge in interest that led to significant development in the field of photophysical and optoelectronic properties of heavier pnictogens and their transition metal complexes. The presence of heavier pnictogens (As, Sb and Bi) in the molecular skeleton promotes inter-system crossing (ISC) and reverse inter-system crossing (RISC), because of the heavy atom effect, via altering the intermolecular interactions and orbital energy levels. As a result, π-conjugated heavier pnictogen compounds such as arsines, dibenzoarsepins, arsinoquinoline, heterofluorene, benzo[b]heterole (heterole=arsole, bismole, and stibole) show unique optoelectronic properties such as narrow bandgap, low-energy absorption, and long-wavelength emission than lighter pnictogen-based compounds. This review focuses on recent advances in the synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogen compounds. The synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogens are discussed and elaborated.

Homoleptic Al(III) Photosensitizers for Durable CO2 Photoreduction

Exploiting noble-metal-free systems for high-performance photocatalytic CO₂ reduction still presents a key challenge, partially due to the long-standing difficulties in developing potent and durable earth-abundant photosensitizers. Therefore, based on the very cheap aluminum metal, we have deployed a systematic series of homoleptic Al(III) photosensitizers featuring 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands for CO₂ photoreduction. The combined studies of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that in anerobic CH₃CN solutions at room temperature, visible-light excitation of the Al(III) photosensitizers leads to an efficient population of singlet excited states with nanosecond-scale lifetimes and notable emission quantum yields (10-40%). The results of transient absorption spectroscopy further identified the presence of emissive singlet and unexpectedly nonemissive triplet excited states. More importantly, the introduction of methyl groups at the pyrrolide rings can greatly improve the visible-light absorption, reducing power, and durability of the Al(III) photosensitizers. With triethanolamine, BIH (1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole), and an Fe(II)-quaterpyridine catalyst, the most methylated Al(III) photosensitizer achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.8% at 450 nm for selective (>99%) CO₂-to-CO conversion, which is nearly 28 times that of the unmethylated one (0.1%) under identical conditions. The optimal system realizes a maximum turnover number of 10250 and higher robustness than the systems with Ru(II) and Cu(I) benchmark photosensitizers. Quenching experiments using fluorescence spectroscopy elucidate that the photoinduced electron transfer in the Al(III)-sensitized system follows a reductive quenching pathway. The remarkable tunability and cost efficiency of these Al(III) photosensitizers should allow them as promising components in noble-metal-free systems for solar fuel conversion.

Zinc-Based Metal-Organic Framework with MLCT Properties as an Efficient Electrochemiluminescence Probe for Trace Detection of Trenbolone

In this work, we utilized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives as ligands to develop a zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) as an effective detection probe to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for trenbolone detection. As traditional ECL emitters, PAHs and their derivatives have limited luminescence efficiency because of the aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) effect. Therefore, Zn-PTC was designed by the coordination of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic (PTC) in the MOF to eliminate the ACQ effect. Meanwhile, Zn-PTC formed based on an aromatic ligand possessed the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) effect, which could transfer the energy of Zn²⁺ to the aromatic ligand for strong luminescence. The ECL efficiency of Zn-PTC was calculated to be approximately 2.2 times that of the ligand (K₄PTC). Second, the Ag@Fe core-shell bimetallic nanocrystal was prepared for efficient activation of persulfate (S₂O₈^2-), thereby generating more sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-) to further promote ECL emission. According to ECL characterizations, UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, and density functional theory calculations, the luminescence and signal amplification mechanisms were investigated. In addition, NKFRGKYKC (NKF) was introduced as an affinity ligand to directionally immobilize the target antibodies, thus releasing specific sites in their Fab fragment to enhance binding activity. Based on the above strategies, the constructed biosensor exhibited high sensitivity, realizing trace detection of TBE with a wide detection range (10 fg/mL-100 ng/mL) and a low detection limit (3.28 fg/mL). This study provided an important reference for sensitive monitoring of steroid pollutants in the environment.

Bismuth organic frameworks exhibiting enhanced phosphorescence

Bismuth-based organic frameworks (BiOFs) can display interesting phosphorescent properties, but the relationship between structure and optical activity remains underexplored. The structure-dependent phosphorescence properties in the BiOFs are investigated using different multidentate ligands. In-depth analysis of the luminescence properties confirms that the densely packed framework shows long-lasting phosphorescence at room temperature, owing to an efficient electron-hole separation. The combination of spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal structural analysis provides important insights into the emission control through BiOFs structural change, which can be a useful strategy for modulating the optical properties of various metal organic frameworks. Furthermore, taking the advantage of long-lasting phosphorescence, the potential usage as an eco-friendly photocatalyst is demonstrated.

Luminescent First-Row Transition Metal Complexes

Precious and rare elements have traditionally dominated inorganic photophysics and photochemistry, but now we are witnessing a paradigm shift toward cheaper and more abundant metals. Even though emissive complexes based on selected first-row transition metals have long been known, recent conceptual breakthroughs revealed that a much broader range of elements in different oxidation states are useable for this purpose. Coordination compounds of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu now show electronically excited states with unexpected reactivity and photoluminescence behavior. Aside from providing a compact survey of the recent conceptual key advances in this dynamic field, our Perspective identifies the main design strategies that enabled the discovery of fundamentally new types of 3d-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers operating in solution at room temperature.

Harnessing Bismuth Coordination Chemistry to Achieve Bright, Long-Lived Organic Phosphorescence

A new bismuth(III)-organic compound, Hphen[Bi₂(HPDC)₂(PDC)₂(NO₃)]·4H₂O (Bi-1; PDC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), was synthesized, and the structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was found to display bright-blue-green phosphorescence in the solid state under UV irradiation, with a luminescent lifetime of 1.776 ms at room temperature. The room temperature and low-temperature (77 K) emission spectra exhibited the vibronic structure characteristic of Hphen phosphorescence. Time-dependent density functional theory studies showed that the excitation pathway arises from an energy transfer from the dimeric structural unit to Hphen, with participation from a nine-coordinate Bi center. The triplet state of Hphen is believed to be stabilized via supramolecular interactions, which, when coupled with the heavy-atom effect induced by Bi, leads to the observed long-lived luminescence. The compound displayed a solid-state quantum yield of over 27%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such compound to exhibit phenanthrolinium phosphorescence with such long-lived, room temperature lifetimes in the solid state. To further elucidate the energy-transfer mechanism, Ln³⁺ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm) ions were successfully doped into the parent compound, and the resulting materials exhibited dual emission from Hphen and Ln, promoting tunability of the emission color.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and luminescence properties of heteroleptic bismuth-organic compounds

The synthesis and photoluminescent properties of four bismuth-organic compounds, their lanthanide doped analogs, and an isostructural europium complex are reported.
