Abstract
Correlating the molecular structure with the electronic structure of lanthanide(III) solvates is a challenging task. Neodymium(III) in aqueous solution serves as an appealing and straightforward model to address this issue. Herein, the experimentally determined electronic structure of neodymium(III) in water is compared with ab initio calculated electronic structures based on various models of its molecular structure. This comparison enables the determination of the most reliable molecular structure. The findings reveal that the molecular structure of the neodymium(III) aqua ion that best aligns with its electronic structure corresponds to a nine coordinated neodymium(III) complex, surrounded by 17 water molecules in the second coordination sphere. The role of second-sphere water molecules was investigated by calculating the crystal field splitting of the five Kramers doublets within the 4I9/2 low-energy multiplet for several calculated molecular structures with coordination numbers of eight, nine, and ten. The results demonstrated that the shape of the donor molecular orbitals plays a critical role in the crystal field splitting of the neodymium(III) ion. Furthermore, the findings confirmed that the orientation of the donating orbitals, specifically the orientation of the O-H bonds in water, is essential for accurately describing the electronic structure. Finally, manual alteration of the Nd-O bond lengths revealed that CAS(3,7)CF calculations tend to underestimate the crystal field strength.

Abstract
This work reports the engineering and functional properties of an emerging class of heterobimetallic 3d-4f ionic complexes designed with cobalt and rare-earth (RE) metals. We present a comprehensive examination of the structural, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of the heterobimetallic ionic complexes with the general formula [Co(hfa)3]-[RE(hfa)2tetraglyme]+ (RE = Dy, Eu, and Y), where the metal centres are coordinated by hexafluoroacetylacetonate (Hhfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione), β-diketone and tetraglyme (2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane) polyether. Structural analysis reveals an octahedral coordination geometry enveloping the cobalt(II) centre, characterized by inherent symmetry properties consistent across the derivatives, while a capped square-antiprism coordination polyhedron is observed for the RE ions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirms the constancy of the electronic structure of the cobalt(II) moiety and the significant contribution of the lanthanide ions to the magnetic properties of the compounds. The non-trivial single-ion magnetic properties of cobalt(II), dysprosium(III), and europium(III) centres, and the effect of their interactions are investigated by a detailed static and dynamic magnetic susceptibility study. Moreover, optical analyses have been carried out showing the π-π* intraligand (IL) transition of the β-diketonate ligand and the d-d cobalt(II) transitions. Luminescence characterization of dysprosium(III) and europium(III) derivatives exhibits their characteristic emission bands, indicative of the unique photophysical properties conferred by the lanthanide ions. Thermal studies using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveal good thermal stability and volatility properties, underscoring the interesting nature of these ionic complexes for potential deposition on suitable substrates. In summary, these heterobimetallic complexes show intriguing optical and magnetic properties with potential implications across diverse scientific disciplines, including molecular magnetism, optoelectronics, and materials science.

Abstract
The reaction of Ln(NO3)2·6H2O (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm and Yb) with the respective enantiopure (R)-(-)-2-phenylbutyric or (S)-(+)-2-phenylbutyric acid (R/S-2-HPhBut) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen) allows the isolation of chiral dinuclear compounds of the formula [Ln2(μ-R/S-2-PhBut)4(R/S-2PhBut)2(Bphen)2] where Ln = Nd3+ (R/S-Nd-a), Sm3+ (R/S-Sm-a), Eu3+ (R/S-Eu-a), Tb3+ (R/S-Tb-a and R/S-Tb-b), Dy3+ (R/S-Dy-a and R/S-Dy-b), Tm3+ (R/S-Tm-b) and Yb3+ (R/S-Yb-b). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for compounds S-Eu-a and S-Tm-b. Powder crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for all complexes. From the crystallographic data two different structural motifs were found which are referred to as structure type a and structure type b. In structure type a, the Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands with two different kinds of coordination modes whereas in structure type b the two Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands showing only one kind of coordination mode. For those lanthanide ions exhibiting both structure types, Tb3+ and Dy3+, a difference in the luminescence and magnetism behavior is observed. All compounds (except R/S-Tm-b) exhibit sensitized luminescence, notably the Eu3+ and Tb3+ analogues. Circular Dichroism (CD) and Circular Polarized Luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and in 1 mM dichloromethane (DCM) solutions are reported, leading to improved chiroptical properties for the DCM solutions. The asymmetry factor (glum) in 1 mM DCM is ±0.02 (+ for R-Eu-a) for the magnetically allowed transition 5D0 → 7F1 and ±0.03 (+ for R-Tb-a and R-Tb-b) for the 5D4 → 7F5 transition. Magnetic properties of all compounds were studied and the Dy3+ compound with the structural motif b (R-Dy-b) shows Single Molecular Magnet (SMM) behavior under a 0 T magnetic field. However, R-Dy-a is a field-induced SMM.

Abstract
Switchable spin dynamic properties in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) via an applied stimulus have applications in single-molecule devices. Many SMMs containing heavy lanthanoid ions with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have been reported to exhibit SMM characteristics in the absence of an external magnetic field. On the other hand, SMMs containing light lanthanoid cerium(III) (Ce3+) ions exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. We investigated the chemical conversion of a diamagnetic Ce4+ ion (4f0) to a paramagnetic Ce3+ ion (4f1) in Ce-phthalocyaninato double-decker complexes (TBA+[Ce(obPc)2]- (1) and TBA+[Ce(Pc)2]- (2)) which exhibit field-induced SMM behaviour due to a 4f1 system. The phthalocyaninato ligands with electron-donating substituents (obPc2- = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octabutoxyphthalocyaninato) in 1 have a significant effect on the valence state of the Ce ion, which is reflected in its magnetic properties due to the mixed valence state of the Ce ion. Given that Ce double-decker complexes with π-conjugated ligands undergo intramolecular electron transfer (IET) to the Ce ion mixed valence state, characterised by a mixture of 4f0 and 4f1 configurations, we examined the dynamic disorder inherent in IET influencing magnetic relaxation.

Abstract
Five new β-diketonate Ce3+ mononuclear complexes, [Ce(Btfa)3(H2O)2] (1), [Ce(Btfa)3(phen)] (2), [Ce(Btfa)3(bipy)] (3), [Ce(Btfa)3(terpy)] (4) and [Ce(Btfa)3(bathophen)(DMF)] (5), where Btfa- = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, terpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and bathophen = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, have been synthesized and structurally characterized through X-ray diffraction of single crystals. The central Ce3+ atom displays a coordination number of 8 for 1, 2 and 3 and of 9 for 4 and 5. Under a 0 T external magnetic field, none of the given compounds exhibits single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour. However, a small magnetic field, between 0.02 and 0.1 T, is enough for all the compounds to exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization. A comprehensive magnetic analysis, with experimental magnetic data and ab initio calculations, was undertaken for all the complexes, and the study highlights the significance of the different spin relaxation mechanisms that must be considered for a Ce3+ lanthanide ion.

Abstract
CeO2 is a popular material in heterogeneous catalysis, molecular sensors, and electronics and owes many of its special properties to the redox activity of Ce, present as both Ce3+ and Ce4+. However, the reduction of CeO2 with H2 (thought to occur through proton-electron transfer (PET) giving Ce3+ and new OH bonds) is poorly understood due to the high reduction temperatures necessary and the ill-defined nature of the hydrogen atom sources typically used. We have previously shown that transition-metal hydrides with weak M-H bonds react with reducible metal oxides at room temperature by PET. Here, we show that CpCr(CO)3H (1) transfers protons and electrons to CeO2 due to its weak Cr-H bond. We can titrate CeO2 with 1 and measure not only the number of surface Ce3+ sites formed (in agreement with X-ray absorption spectroscopy) but also the lower limit of the hydrogen atom adsorption free energy (HAFE). The results match the extent of reduction achieved from H2 treatment and hydrogen spillover on CeO2 in a wide range of applications.

Abstract
Magnetic exchange coupling can modulate the slow magnetic relaxation in single-molecule magnets. Despite this, elucidation of exchange coupling remains a significant challenge for the lanthanoid(iii) ions, both experimentally and computationally. In this work, the crystal field splitting and 4f-π exchange coupling in the erbium-semiquinonate complex [ErTp2dbsq] (Er-dbsq; Tp- = hydro-tris(1-pyrazolyl)borate, dbsqH2 = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinone) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry, and CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations. A related complex with a diamagnetic ligand, [ErTp2trop] (Er-trop; tropH = tropolone), has been used as a model for the crystal field splitting in the absence of coupling. Magnetic and INS data indicate antiferromagnetic exchange for Er-dbsq with a coupling constant of Jex = -0.23 meV (-1.8 cm-1) (-2Jex formalism) and good agreement is found between theory and experiment, with the low energy magnetic and spectroscopic properties well modelled. Most notable is the ability of the ab initio modelling to reproduce the signature of interference between localised 4f states and delocalised π-radical states that is evident in the Q-dependence of the exchange excitation. This work highlights the power of combining INS with EPR and magnetometry for determination of ground state properties, as well as the enhanced capability of CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations and purposely developed ab initio-based theoretical models. We deliver an unprecedentedly detailed representation of the entangled character of 4f-π exchange states, which is obtained via an accurate image of the spin-orbital transition density between the 4f-π exchange coupled wavefunctions.

Abstract
Magnetism of molecular quantum materials such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been actively studied for potential applications in the new generation of high-density data storage using SMMs and quantum information science. Magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling are two key properties of d- and f-metal complexes. Here, phonons refer to both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. Direct determination of magnetic anisotropy and experimental studies of spin-phonon coupling are critical to the understanding of molecular magnetism. This article discusses our recent approach in using three complementary techniques, far-IR and Raman magneto-spectroscopies (FIRMS and RaMS, respectively) and inelastic neutron scatterings (INS), to determine magnetic excited states. Spin-phonon couplings are observed in FIRMS and RaMS. DFT phonon calculations give energies and symmetries of phonons as well as calculated INS spectra which help identify magnetic peaks in experimental INS spectra.

Abstract
Polymorphic layered lanthanide coordination polymers provide opportunities to study the effect of intralayer and interlayer interactions on their magnetic dynamics. Herein we report a series of layered lanthanide phosphonates, namely, α-Ln(2-qpH)(SO4)(H2O)2 (Ln = Sm) (α-Ln), β-Ln(2-qpH)(SO4)(H2O)2 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm) (β-Ln) and γ-Ln(2-qpH)(SO4)(H2O)2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) (γ-Ln) (2-qpH2 = 2-quinolinephosphonic acid), which crystallize in monoclinic P21/c (α-Ln), triclinic P1̄ (β-Ln) and orthorhombic Pbca (γ-Ln) space groups, respectively. The structural differences between the β- and γ-phases lie not only in the intralayer but also in the interlayer. Within the layers, the Ln2O2 dimers are aligned parallel in the β-phase, but are non-parallel in the γ-phase. In the interlayer, there are π-π interactions between the quinoline groups in the α- and β-phases but not in the γ-phase. Magnetic studies reveal a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperatures for compounds γ-Ce, β-Nd, and γ-Nd, and the impact of polymorphism on the magnetic dynamics of Nd(III) compounds is discussed.

Abstract
The chemistry of lanthanides is limited to one electron transfer reactions due to the difficulty of accessing multiple oxidation states. Here we report that a redox-active ligand combining three siloxides with an arene ring in a tripodal ligand can stabilize cerium complexes in four different redox states and can promote multielectron redox reactivity in cerium complexes. Ce(iii) and Ce(iv) complexes [(LO3)Ce(THF)] (1) and [(LO3)CeCl] (2) (LO3 = 1,3,5-(2-OSi(OtBu)2C6H4)3C6H3) were synthesized and fully characterized. Remarkably the one-electron reduction and the unprecedented two-electron reduction of the tripodal Ce(iii) complex are easily achieved to yield reduced complexes [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][(LO3)Ce(THF)] (3) and [K2{(LO3)Ce(Et2O)3}] (5) that are formally "Ce(ii)" and "Ce(i)" analogues. Structural analysis, UV and EPR spectroscopy and computational studies indicate that in 3 the cerium oxidation state is in between +II and +III with a partially reduced arene. In 5 the arene is doubly reduced, but the removal of potassium results in a redistribution of electrons on the metal. The electrons in both 3 and 5 are stored onto δ-bonds allowing the reduced complexes to be described as masked "Ce(ii)" and "Ce(i)". Preliminary reactivity studies show that these complexes act as masked Ce(ii) and Ce(i) in redox reactions with oxidizing substrates such as Ag+, CO2, I2 and S8 effecting both one- and two-electron transfers that are not accessible in classical cerium chemistry.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of the U(iii) bis(cyclopentadienyl) hypersilanide complex [U(Cp'')2{Si(SiMe3)3}] (Cp'' = {C5H3(SiMe3)2-1,3}), together with isostructural lanthanide and group 4 M(iii) homologues, in order to meaningfully compare metal-silicon bonding between early d- and f-block metals. All complexes were characterised by a combination of NMR, EPR, UV-vis-NIR and ATR-IR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, elemental analysis and ab initio calculations. We find that for the [M(Cp'')2{Si(SiMe3)3}] (M = Ti, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, U) series the unique anisotropy axis is conserved tangential to ; this is governed by the hypersilanide ligand for the d-block complexes to give easy plane anisotropy, whereas the easy axis is fixed by the two Cp'' ligands in f-block congeners. This divergence is attributed to hypersilanide acting as a strong σ-donor and weak π-acceptor with the d-block metals, whilst f-block metals show predominantly electrostatic bonding with weaker π-components. We make qualitative comparisons on the strength of covalency to derive the ordering Zr > Ti ≫ U > Nd ≈ Ce ≈ La in these complexes, using a combination of analytical techniques. The greater covalency of 5f3 U(iii) vs. 4f3 Nd(iii) is found by comparison of their EPR and electronic absorption spectra and magnetic measurements, with calculations indicating that uranium 5f orbitals have weak π-bonding interactions with both the silanide and Cp'' ligands, in addition to weak δ-antibonding with Cp''.
