Modification Strategies for Development of 2D Material-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Influence of interfacial water and cations on the oxidation of CO at the platinum/ionic liquid interface

CO oxidation is fundamental to the development of new catalyst materials for fuel cells and key for complete oxidation of small alcohols like methanol or ethanol on Pt catalysts. So far, room-temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) have been used to modify the selectivity and activity in electrocatalysis. In order to understand the mechanism of CO oxidation in RTIL in more detail we have investigated this reaction at the Pt(111)/1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluorosulfonylimide [BMIM][NTf₂] electrode/electrolyte interface as a function of H₂O concentration and electrode potential with in situ sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Using SFG spectroscopy, we address the changes of linearly bonded CO molecules on Pt(111), while we monitor the changes in the bulk electrolyte with IRAS through vibrational bands from H₂O, CO₂ and CO. The presence of water in [BMIM][NTf₂] shifts the onset potential for CO oxidation by more than 200 mV when the water concentration is increased from 0.01 to 1.5 M, which we relate to the incorporation and the availability of water at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The nature of the RTIL cation has also a large effect on the surface excess of H₂O since RTILs like [BMMIM][NTf₂] and [BMPyrr][NTf₂] which are prone to form closed-packed structures, can block the incorporation of water and lead to more sluggish CO oxidation with larger overpotentials and oxidation in a much wider potential range for which we provide evidence by additional SFG measurements. These results clearly show that the choice of the RTIL is important for CO oxidation on Pt(111) electrode surfaces - an observation that is likely highly relevant also to other catalysts and catalytic reactions that require the presence of interfacial water.

ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Derived Co Embedded into Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotube Hollow Porous Carbon Supported Pt as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Methanol Oxidation

It is of prime importance to develop anode electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) with good performance, which is critical for their commercial applications. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials are extensively developed as supports of catalysts. Herein, Co embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube hollow porous carbon (Co-NCNT-HPC) derived from MOFs have been fabricated, which were synthesized by pyrolyzing at an optimized temperature of 800 °C using ZIF-8@ZIF-67 as a precursor. The presence of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 ensures the doping of nitrogen and the large specific surface area of the support materials at high temperatures. A Pt/Co-NCNT-HPC800 sample, which was synthesized using Co-NCNT-HPC800 as a support, showed an enhanced mass activity of 416.2 mA mg⁻¹_Pt for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and the onset potential of CO_ad oxidation of 0.51 V, which shifted negatively about 0.13 V compared with Pt/C (20%). Moreover, the Pt/Co-NCNT-HPC800 sample exhibits high stability. This work provides a facile strategy for MOF-derived carbon materials to construct advanced electrocatalysts for MOR.
