Combination of a Metal-N-Heterocyclic-Carbene Catalyst and a Chiral Aminocatalyst within a Covalent Organic Framework: a Powerful Cooperative Approach for Relay Asymmetric Catalysis

Metalated covalent organic frameworks as efficient catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions

Multicomponent tandem reactions have become indispensable synthetic methods due to their economic advantages and efficient usage in natural products and drug synthesis. The emergence of metalated covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) has opened up new opportunities for the advancement of multicomponent tandem reactions. In contrast to commonly used homogeneous transition metal catalysts, MCOFs possess regular porosity, high crystallinity, and rich metal chelation sites that facilitate the uniform distribution and anchoring of metals within their cavities. Thus, they show extremely high activity and have recently been widely employed as catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions. It is timely to conduct a review of MCOFs in multicomponent tandem reactions, in order to offer guidance and assistance for the synthesis of MCOF catalysts and their application in multicomponent tandem reactions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the design and synthesis of MCOFs, their application and progress in multicomponent tandem reactions, and the primary challenges encountered during their current development with the aim of contributing to the promotion of the field.

Biomimetic Chiral Nanomaterials with Selective Catalysis Activity

Chiral nanomaterials with unique chiral configurations and biocompatible ligands have been booming over the past decade for their interesting chiroptical effect, unique catalytical activity, and related bioapplications. The catalytic activity and selectivity of chiral nanomaterials have emerged as important topics, that can be potentially controlled and optimized by the rational biochemical design of nanomaterials. In this review, chiral nanomaterials synthesis, composition, and catalytic performances of different biohybrid chiral nanomaterials are discussed. The construction of chiral nanomaterials with multiscale chiral geometries along with the underlying principles for enhancing chiroptical responses are highlighted. Various biochemical approaches to regulate the selectivity and catalytic activity of chiral nanomaterials for biocatalysis are also summarized. Furthermore, attention is paid to specific chiral ligands, materials compositions, structure characteristics, and so on for introducing selective catalytic activities of representative chiral nanomaterials, with emphasis on substrates including small molecules, biological macromolecule, and in-site catalysis in living systems. Promising progress has also been emphasized in chiral nanomaterials featuring structural versatility and improved chiral responses that gave rise to unprecedented chances to utilize light for biocatalytic applications. In summary, the challenges, future trends, and prospects associated with chiral nanomaterials for catalysis are comprehensively proposed.

General Strategy for Incorporation of Functional Group Handles into Covalent Organic Frameworks via the Ugi Reaction

The library of imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has grown significantly over the last two decades, featuring a variety of morphologies, pore sizes, and applications. An array of synthetic methods has been developed to expand the scope of the COF functionalities; however, most of these methods were designed to introduce functional scaffolds tailored to a specific application. Having a general approach to diversify COFs via late-stage incorporation of functional group handles would greatly facilitate the transformation of these materials into platforms for a variety of useful applications. Herein, we report a general strategy to introduce functional group handles in COFs via the Ugi multicomponent reaction. To demonstrate the versatility of this approach, we have synthesized two COFs with hexagonal and kagome morphologies. We then introduced azide, alkyne, and vinyl functional groups, which could be readily utilized for a variety of post-synthetic modifications. This facile approach enables the functionalization of any COFs containing imine linkages.

Photophysical evaluation on the electronic properties of synthesized biologically significant pyrido fused imidazo[4,5-c]quinolines

A single pot microwave assisted method was employed to synthesize a series of novel pyrido fused imidazo[4,5-c]quinolines. The electronic properties of these derivatives were investigated by following their photophysical behaviour under isolated and solvated conditions via computational and experimental approaches. The solvatochromic effect of these derivatives was investigated in the ground and excited singlet states by following the absorption and fluorescence emission and excitation spectra. Further the effect of general and specific solvent effects were also investigated by plotting Stokes shift against Lippert-Mataga, ET(30) and Kamlet-Taft polarity parameters respectively. The deviation from linearity in ET(30) plot indicates that formation of different species in polar protic solvents. The biological applications of these derivatives as potential drug candidates were evaluated by in silico computational methods followed by pharmacokinetic properties predictions. The ability of these derivatives to inhibit human casein kinase 2 (CK2) was evaluated. The structure activity relationships were correlated by evaluating the electronic properties through experimental photophysical investigations including solvatochromic effect and computational electronic structure calculations. Of the various derivatives, p-nitro phenyl substituted pyrido fused imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline exhibited good inhibitory activity against CK2 enzyme and hence could serve as a promising drug candidate.

Construction of Covalent Organic Frameworks via Multicomponent Reactions

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) combine at least three reactants to afford the desired product in a highly atom-economic way and are therefore viewed as efficient one-pot combinatorial synthesis tools allowing one to significantly boost molecular complexity and diversity. Nowadays, MCRs are no longer confined to organic synthesis and have found applications in materials chemistry. In particular, MCRs can be used to prepare covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are crystalline porous materials assembled from organic monomers and exhibit a broad range of properties and applications. This synthetic approach retains the advantages of small-molecule MCRs, not only strengthening the skeletal robustness of COFs, but also providing additional driving forces for their crystallization, and has been used to prepare a series of robust COFs with diverse applications. The present perspective article provides the general background for MCRs, discusses the types of MCRs employed for COF synthesis to date, and addresses the related critical challenges and future perspectives to inspire the MCR-based design of new robust COFs and promote further progress in this emerging field.

Reticular Synthesis of One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with 4-c sql Topology for Enhanced Fluorescence Emission

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been extensively investigated due to their unique structure, porosity, and functionality. However, at the topological level, COFs remain as two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) structures, while COFs with one-dimensional (1D) topology have not been systematically explored. In this work, we proposed a synthetic strategy for the construction of 1D-COFs based on non-linear edges and suitable high-symmetry vertices. Compared with their 2D-COFs counterparts, the 1D-COFs with AIEgens located at the vertex of the frame exhibited enhanced fluorescence. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the dimensional-induced rotation restriction (DIRR) effect could spontaneously introduce additional non-covalent interactions between the strip frames, which could substantially diminish non-radiative transitions. This work also provides protocols for the design of 1D-COFs and a guidance scheme for the synthesis of emitting COFs.

Metalated covalent organic frameworks: from synthetic strategies to diverse applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of organic crystalline porous materials discovered in the early 21st century that have become an attractive class of emerging materials due to their high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. However, many chemical and physical properties strongly depend on the presence of metal ions in materials for advanced applications, but metal-free COFs do not have these properties and are therefore excluded from such applications. Metalated COFs formed by combining COFs with metal ions, while retaining the advantages of COFs, have additional intriguing properties and applications, and have attracted considerable attention over the past decade. This review presents all aspects of metalated COFs, from synthetic strategies to various applications, in the hope of promoting the continued development of this young field.
