Abstract
In situ characterization of coordination species and their evolution are crucial for effective lanthanide separation and recycling. Current technical approaches often operate under constrained conditions, requiring complex equipment, experimental setups, and sometimes intricate data interpretation. Herein, we demonstrate that carbon NMR titrations offer a valuable approach for in situ coordination analysis of lanthanides, particularly for highly fused preorganized ligands that offer more NMR-active carbons than traditional proton NMR. Two representative ligands of both lipophilic and hydrophilic in nature were investigated, and the resulting carbon NMR titration data were analyzed. Comparisons with IR and single-crystal data showed that NMR provided insights not only into the evolution of coordination species but also into changes in the electron distribution during complex formation. Additionally, we discussed inconsistencies between atomic charge populations obtained from carbon NMR and those from Mulliken and Hirshfeld calculations. With advancements in NMR technology and the availability of higher-field NMR instruments, we believe NMR titrations will play an increasingly significant role in unravelling the complex solution coordination chemistry of f-block elements.

Abstract
Early stages of radiolysis of solutions with 2,6-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzo-[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)pyridine (CyMe4-BTP) and 6,6'-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzo-[1,2,4-]triazin-3-yl)-[2,2']bipyridine (CyMe4-BTBP) ligands in cyclohexanone, proposed as a solvent for selective actinide extraction, were studied by means of the pulse radiolysis technique with spectrophotometric detection. Transient UV-vis spectra of excited triplet states of ligands, formed by energy transfer from cyclohexanone excited triplet states to ligands, were recorded for the first time. The influence of typical extraction conditions (the presence of diluted acid and O2 from air) on the mechanisms of reactions in the system studied was assessed. It was shown that an addition of benzophenone in high concentrations to the system together with its continuous saturation by O2 could partially protect ligands from radiation damage, caused by the high-energy radiation emitted by the spent nuclear fuel.

Abstract
Excellent "CHON" compatible ligands based on a heterocyclic skeleton for the separation of trivalent actinides [An(III)] from lanthanides [Ln(III)] have been widely explored, the aim being spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The combination mode of a soft/hard (N/O) donor upon the coordination chemistry of An(III) and Ln(III) should play a vital role with respect to the performance of ligands. As such, in this work, two typical experimentally available phenanthroline-derived tetradentate ligands, CyMe4-BTPhen (L1) and Et-Tol-DAPhen (L4), and two theoretically designed asymmetric tetradentate heterocyclic ligands, L2 and L3, with various N/O donors were investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory. We have evaluated the electronic structures of L1-L4 and their coordination modes, bonding properties, and extraction reactions with Am(III) and Eu(III). We found that the Am/Eu-N interactions play a more important role in the orbital interactions between the ligand and Am(III)/Eu(III) ions. Compared with those of L1, the coordinated O atoms of L2 and L4 weaken the metal-N bonds. The Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity follows the order L1 > L2 > L4 based on the change in Gibbs free energy, reflecting the fact that the Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity of the ligand is affected by the number of coordinated N atoms. In addition, L3 displays the strongest binding ability for Am(III)/Eu(III) ions and the smallest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among the four ligands, due to its structural preorganization. This work clarifies the influence of the number of coordinated N and O atoms of ligands on Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which provides valuable fundamental information for the design of efficient ligands with N and O donors for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.

Abstract
The separation of Lns(III) from radioactive Ans(III) in high-level liquid waste remains a formidable hydrometallurgical challenge. Water-soluble ligands are believed to be new frontiers in the search of efficient Lns/Ans separation ligands to close the nuclear fuel cycles and dealing with current existing nuclear waste. Currently, the development of hydrophilic ligands far lags behind their lipophilic counterparts due to their complicated synthetic procedures, inferior extraction performances, and acid tolerances. In this paper, we have showed a series of hydroxyl-group functionalized phenanthroline diimides were efficient masking agents for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation under high acidity (˃ 1 M HNO3). Record high SFEu(III)/Am(III) of 162 and 264 were observed for Phen-2DIC2OH and Phen-2DIC4OH in 1.25 M HNO3 which represents the best Eu(III)/Am(III) separation performance at this acidity. UV-vis absorption, NMR and TRLFS titrations were conducted to elucidate the predominant of 1:1 ligand/metal species under extraction conditions. X-ray data of both the ligand and Eu(III) complex together with DFT calculations revealed the superior extraction performances and selectivities. The current reported hydrophilic ligands were easy to prepare and readily to scale-up, acid tolerant and highly efficient, together with their CHON-compatible nature make them promising candidates in the development of advanced separation processes.

Abstract
The effect of cyclic and aromatic substituents on the complexation behavior of phosphine oxide ligands with Am(III) and Eu(III) was investigated at density functional theory (DFT) and domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled-cluster (DLPNO-CC) levels. Combining DFT with accurate coupled cluster methods, we have evaluated the dispersion energy contributions to the complexation energies for trivalent Am and Eu complexes for the first time. Irrespective of the nature of substituents on the P atom, the electronic structure of the P═O group remains identical in all of the ligands. The study reveals the importance of dispersion interactions during complexation and is estimated to be more significant for Am(III) than for Eu(III) complexes.

Abstract
Two novel bistriazolyl-phenanthroline (BTrzPhen) ligands, bearing benzene-sulphonate (DS-BTrzPhen) and amino-acidic (DAA-BTrzPhen) hydrophilizing moieties were developed and found to be more soluble in aqueous acidic media with improved selectivity for Am(iii) over Eu(iii) in solvent extraction studies having SFEu/Am values reaching >300. The remarkable activities of both ligands suggest that BTrzPhen ligands are generally still worth exploring and improving.

Abstract
Rare-earth elements are widely used in high-end technologies, the production of permanent magnets (PMs) being one of the sectors with the greatest current demand and likely greater future demand. The combination of Nd and Dy in NdFeB PMs enhances their magnetic properties but makes their recycling more challenging. Due to the similar chemical properties of Nd and Dy, their separation is expensive and currently limited to the small scale. It is therefore crucially important to devise efficient and selective methods that can recover and then reuse those critical metals. To address these issues, a series of heptadentate Trensal-based ligands were used for the complexation of Dy3+ and Nd3+ ions, with the goal of indicating the role of coordination and solubility equilibria in the selective precipitation of Ln3+-metal complexes from multimetal non-water solutions. Specifically, for a 1:1 Nd/Dy mixture, a selective and fast precipitation of the Dy complex occurred in acetone with the Trensalp-OMe ligand at room temperature, with a concomitant enrichment of Nd in the solution phase. In acetone, complexes of Nd and Dy with Trensalp-OMe were characterized by very similar formation constants of 7.0(2) and 7.3(2), respectively. From the structural analysis of an array of Dy and Nd complexes with TrensalR ligands, we showed that Dy invariably provided complexes with coordination number (cn) of 7, whereas the larger Nd experienced an expansion of the coordination sphere by recruiting additional solvent molecules and giving a cn of >7. The significant structural differences have been identified as the main premises upon which a suitable separation strategy can be devised with these kind of ligands, as well as other preorganized polydentate ligands that can exploit the small differences in Ln3+ coordination requirements.
