Hybrid Photochromic Lanthanide Phosphonate with Multiple Photoresponsive Functionalities

Bifunctional Role of Methyl Viologen in UV and X-ray Sensitive Switchable Organophosphonate Single Crystal

Finding X-ray and UV responsive hybrid single crystals including their versatile properties is highly desirable though the fabrication of such material is a very challenging task to researchers. Herein, a methyl viologen assisted hybrid nickel organophosphonate structure (i.e., NIT1) is demonstrated by adapting an in situ solvothermal strategy to investigate the X-ray effect and photochromic behaviors. The bifunctional coordinated and templated roles of monocationic and bicationic methyl viologen units present in the hybrid structure are noteworthy and can manifest prominent structural enhancement and reversible photochromism behaviors.

Single-phase white light material and antibiotic detection of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks

WLEDs have been widely used in lighting and display equipment due to their energy-saving and environment-friendly advantages, but it is still a great challenge to construct high-quality single-phase white light materials for the preparation of WLEDs. In this work, three Ln-MOFs (HNU-82-84) with the same structure were synthesized by assembling rare earth ions (Tb3+, Eu3+, La3+) and 4,4',4''-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H3TCA) ligands. The structure and optical properties of the three compounds were investigated. Under the ultraviolet lamp, HNU-82-84 displays green light, red light, and blue light emission, respectively. Based on the RGB principle, aiming at the single-phase white material, the proportion of adding rare earth ions is reasonably adjusted to design and synthesize the Ln-MOF (Eu0.015Tb0.037La0.148-TCA) with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.319, 0.344). In addition, the WLED was prepared by Eu0.015Tb0.037La0.148-TCA and commercial LED lamps. Furthermore, HNU-82 has strong fluorescence emission and good water stability and can be used to detect nitrofurazone (NZF) and nitrofurantoin (NFT). The concentrations of the aqueous solutions of NZF and NFT had a well correlated linear relationship with the fluorescence quenching effect of HNU-82, and the detection limits were 6.60 × 10-7 mol L-1 and 4.62 × 10-7 mol L-1, respectively. Hence, HNU-82 also has potential as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of NZF and NFT in the aquatic environment.

Modulation of magnetization dynamics of an Er(III) coordination polymer by the conversion of a ligand to a radical using UV light

Light-induced substance conversion is highly promising for creating new radical-based compounds. Herein, we report an Er(III) coordination polymer [Er(CA)(ACA)(DMF)(H₂O)]_n (1) and its Y(III)-diluted analogue 1@Y (H₂CA = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone, HACA = 9-anthracene carboxylic acid) with the light-induced transformation of the ligand to a radical. The χ_MT values of light-transformed products 1a and 1a@Y are higher than those of 1 and 1@Y, respectively, due to the formation of radicals by ultraviolet light irradiation, confirmed by EPR measurement as well. The effective energy barriers for magnetization reversal (U_eff) decrease from 72 K for 1 to 67 K for 1a, and from 117 K for 1@Y to 94 K for 1a@Y. This work not only provides a new light-conversion system but also reveals the nature of photo-induced variation of magnetic properties.

Gradual Size Enlargement of Aluminum-Oxo Clusters and the Photochromic Properties

Metallic clusters, assembled by functional motifs, possess the attribute of regulating the properties by changing inorganic and organic components. In this work, a series of aluminum-oxo clusters, [Al₆O(dmp)₄(Hdmp)₂]·2ⁱPrOH [Al₆-1, H₃dmp = 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid], [Al₆(H₂thmmg)₆]·2DMF·2H₂O [Al₆-2, H₅thmmg = N-tris(hydroxymethyl)methylglycine], [Al₈(OH)₄(NAP-OH)₁₂(MeO)₇(MeOH)]Cl·7MeCN·3MeOH (Al₈, HNAP-OH = 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid), and [Al₁₀(NA)₁₀(MeO)₂₀] (Al₁₀, HNA = nicotinic acid), were obtained based on different carboxylic acids, realizing metallic ring size enlargement from 5.91 to 9.32 Å. They all exhibit good chemical stability. Importantly, the Al₈ cluster displays obvious photochromic behavior from pale yellow to orange yellow, originating from the generation of photoinduced radicals in the metal-assisted ligand-ligand electron transfer process of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNAP-OH). This work enriches the metal ring cluster chemistry and reports the example of the aluminum-oxo cluster-based photochromic material, developing a novel system of photochromic materials.

One-Dimensional Chain Viologen-Based Lanthanide Multistimulus-Responsive Materials with Photochromism, Photoluminescence, Photomagnetism, and Ammonia/Amine Vapor Sensing

In this work, a series of novel multistimulus-responsive lanthanide coordination polymers {[LnL(H₂O)₄]Cl₃·3H₂O}_n (Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu) constructed using a dicarboxylic acid viologen derivative L (L = N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate) and LnCl₃·6H₂O were prepared. All materials showed positive responses to UV light, and the photochromic phenomena accompanied by significant photoquenching of photoluminescence could be observed through a photoelectron transfer mechanism. Strikingly, the Dy analogue displayed photomagnetic behavior, as well as responded positively to small molecules of inorganic ammonia/organic amines. Furthermore, the good photoresponsive and ammonia/amine vapor-responsive properties of the Dy-based material were further fulfilled in dual-function papers involving erasable inkless printing and visual amine detection applications. This work aims to advance the development of multistimulus-responsive multifunctional materials incorporating viologen derivates and versatile lanthanide ions and further enriches the research in this field.

Coordinate Anchoring of Mixed Luminophores in Two Isostructural Hybrid Layers to Achieve Tunable Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have widespread applications in biological imaging, anticounterfeiting, and optoelectronic devices. Because of the predesignability of metal-organic complexes (MOCs), the RTP materials based on MOC systems have received huge attention from researchers. The coordinate anchoring of luminophores to enhance the rigidity of organic molecules and restrict the nonradiative transition offers opportunities for generating MOC materials with captivating RTP performance. Hitherto, most of the MOC-based RTP materials feature a single luminophore ligand. The development of new MOC systems with RTP functionality is still challenging. Herein, we use the mixed-ligand synthetic strategy to produce isostructural MOCs, [Zn(TIMB)(X₂-TPA)]·H₂O (1, X = Cl; 2, X = Br; TIMB = 1,3,5-tris(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene; H₂-X₂-TPA = 2,5-dichloroterephthalic and 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid), and modulate the RTP properties of resultant products via the synergy of coordinate anchoring and substitution synthesis. 1 and 2 feature similar coordination layers composed of neutral TIMB and anionic X₂-TPA^2- ligands, which provide a good structural model to tune the RTP performances of final products via substitution synthesis. Different from the reported RTP materials based on MOC systems, our study provides a general way to build and modulate MOC-based RTP materials with the assistance of coordinate anchoring and substitution synthesis strategies.

Ligand-Assisted Controllable Growth of Self-Supporting Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheet Electrodes for an Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Rational design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with controllable thickness is significantly attractive but is also a significant challenge. Herein, the authors report, for the first time, the synthesis of ultrathin 2D nickel-based MOF nanosheets with a thickness of only about 2 nm via a ligand-assisted controllable growth strategy, which cannot be acquired from the exfoliation of their bulky counterparts or the conventional hydrothermal method. The correlation between 2D nanosheets and crystal growth preference was demonstrated through a judicious choice of a specific [Ni(BIP)(p-BDC)(H₂O)₂]_n framework (BIP = (3,5-bis(1-imidazoly)pyridine), p-H₂BDC = terephthalic acid) to underlie the geometry of the resultant morphology. Under the modulation by the dosage of terephthalic acid through a corrosion-dissolution-coordination process, the nanosheets of Ni-MOFs with a controllable thickness can be tuned to 50 and 100 nm. Ultrathin 2D Ni-MOF nanosheet-derived N-doped Ni@carbon exhibits a satisfactory electrocatalytic performance with a small overpotential of 170 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, much outperforming the bulk Ni-MOF and the most reported non-noble-metal oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts to date. It is believed that this ligand-assisted controllable growth strategy represents a novel and simple path to prepare high-performance MOF-based electrocatalysts for wide applications.
