Heptanuclear CoII5CoIII2 Cluster as Efficient Water Oxidation Catalyst

Heptanuclear Mixed-Valence Co4IIICo3II Molecular Wheel─A Molecular Analogue of Layered Double Hydroxides with Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior and Electrocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

We present a bifunctional heptanuclear cobalt(II)/cobalt(III) molecular complex formulated as [Co7(μ3-OH)4(H2L1)2(HL2)2](NO3)6·6H2O (1) (where H5L1 is 2,2'-(((1E,1'E)-((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methanylylidene))bis(azanylylidene))bis(propane-1,3-diol)) and H2L2 is 2-amino-1,3-propanediol). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis along with other spectral and magnetic measurements. Structural analysis indicates that 1 contains a mixed-valence Co7 cluster where a central Co(II) ion is connected to six different Co centers (four CoIII and two CoII ions) by four μ3-OH groups, giving rise to a planar heptanuclear cluster that resembles a molecular fragment of a layered double hydroxide (LDH). Two triply deprotonated (H2L1)3- ligands form the outer side of the cluster while two singly deprotonated (HL2)- ligands are located at the top and bottom of the central heptanuclear core. Variable temperature magnetic measurements indicate the presence of weak ferromagnetic CoII···CoII interactions (J = 3.53(6) cm-1) within the linear trinuclear CoII cluster. AC susceptibility measurements show that 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) with τ0 = 8.2(7) × 10-7 s and Ueff = 11.3(4) K. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 1 in homogeneous phase shows an overpotential of 455 mV, with a Faradaic efficiency of 81% and a TOF of 8.97 × 104 μmol H2 h-1 mol-1.

Serendipitous formation of oxygen-bridged CuII6M (M = MnII, CoII) double cubanes showing electrocatalytic water oxidation

Hydroxido-bridged CuII6M double-cubane clusters (M = Mn^II, Co^II) supported by D-penicillaminedisulfide were unexpectedly formed by treating a D-penicillaminato CuII2PtII2 complex with MBr₂ in water. The clusters displayed heterogeneous electrocatalytic activities for water oxidation dependent on the central M shared by two Cu^II cubane units.

Hemicubane topological analogs of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II mediating water-assisted propylene carbonate oxidation

A series of Ca-Mn clusters with the ligand 2-pyridinemethoxide (Py-CH₂O) have been prepared with varying degrees of topological similarity to the biological oxygen-evolving complex. These clusters activate water as a substrate in the oxidative degradation of propylene carbonate, with activity correlated with topological similarity to the OEC, lowering the onset potential of the oxidation by as much as 700 mV.

Soluble lanthanide-transition-metal clusters Ln36Co12 as effective molecular electrocatalysts for water oxidation

Here we report for the first time soluble lanthanide-transition-metal clusters Ln₃₆Co₁₂ (Ln = Eu, Gd and Dy) as effective homogeneous water oxidation electrocatalysts. The stable 48-metal Ln₃₆Co₁₂ clusters show an effective water oxidation activity under acidic conditions because of the synergistic effect between lanthanide and transition metals in O-O bond formation.

Co/Ni-polyoxotungstate photocatalysts as precursor materials for electrocatalytic water oxidation

An open-core cobalt polyoxometalate (POM) [(A-α-SiW9O34)Co4(OH)3(CH3COO)3]8-Co(1) and its isostructural Co/Ni-analogue [(A-α-SiW9O34)Co1.5Ni2.5(OH)3(CH3COO)3]8-CoNi(2) were synthesized and investigated for their photocatalytic and electrocatalytic performance. Co(1) shows high photocatalytic O2 yields, which are competitive with leading POM water oxidation catalysts (WOCs). Furthermore, Co(1) and CoNi(2) were employed as well-defined precursors for heterogeneous WOCs. Annealing at various temperatures afforded amorphous and crystalline CoWO4- and Co1.5Ni2.5WO4-related nanoparticles. CoWO4-related particles formed at 300 °C showed substantial electrocatalytic improvements and were superior to reference materials obtained from co-precipitation/annealing routes. Interestingly, no synergistic interactions between cobalt and nickel centers were observed for the mixed-metal POM precursor and the resulting tungstate catalysts. This stands in sharp contrast to a wide range of studies on various heterogeneous catalyst types which were notably improved through Co/Ni substitution. The results clearly demonstrate that readily accessible POMs are promising precursors for the convenient and low-temperature synthesis of amorphous heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts with enhanced performance compared to conventional approaches. This paves the way to tailoring polyoxometalates as molecular precursors with tuneable transition metal cores for high performance heterogeneous electrocatalysts. Our results furthermore illustrate the key influence of the synthetic history on the performance of oxide catalysts and highlight the dependence of synergistic metal interactions on the structural environment.

Two biologically inspired tetranuclear nickel(II) catalysts: effect of the geometry of Ni4 core on electrocatalytic water oxidation

Two biologically inspired tetranuclear nickel complexes [Ni₄(L-H)₄(CH₃COO)₃]·Cl (1) and [Ni₄(L-H)₄(CH₃COO)₄]·2CH₃OH (2) (L = di(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol) have been synthesized and investigated by a combination of X-ray crystallography, PXRD, electrochemistry, in-situ UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry and DLS. Both of the two complexes feature a core composed of four Ni(II) ions with the same peripheral ligation provided by the anionic di(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol and MeCOO^- ligands. Whereas, complex 1 possesses one distorted cubane-like [Ni₄(µ₃-O)₄] core, while 2 has one extended butterfly-like [Ni₄(µ₃-O)₂] core. The homogeneous electrocatalytic reactivity of the two water-soluble complexes for water oxidation have been thoroughly studied, which demonstrates that both of them can efficiently electrocatalyze water oxidation with high stability under alkaline conditions, at relatively low over-potentials (η) of 420-790 mV for 1 and 390-780 mV for 2, both in the pH range of 7.67-12.32, with the high TOF of about 139 s^-1 (1) and 69 s^-1 (2) at pH = 12.32, respectively. By a series of comparative experiments for complexes 1 and 2, we proposed that their crystal geometries play an important role in their electrocatalytic reactivity for water oxidation. We verified that biomimetic cubane geometry could promote OER catalysis with two very similar compounds for the first time. Compared with 2, the biomimetic cubane topology of 1 could promote OER catalysis by facilitating efficient charge delocalization and electron-transfer.

Integration of bio-inspired lanthanide-transition metal cluster and P-doped carbon nitride for efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting

Photosynthesis in nature uses the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster as the oxygen-evolving center to catalyze the water oxidation efficiently in photosystem II. Herein, we demonstrate bio-inspired heterometallic LnCo₃ (Ln = Nd, Eu and Ce) clusters, which can be viewed as synthetic analogs of the CaMn₄O₅ cluster. Anchoring LnCo₃ on phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitrides (PCN) shows efficient overall water splitting without any sacrificial reagents. The NdCo₃/PCN-c photocatalyst exhibits excellent water splitting activity and a quantum efficiency of 2.0% at 350 nm. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the transfer of a photoexcited electron and hole into the PCN and LnCo₃ for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed the cooperative water activation on lanthanide and O−O bond formation on transition metal for water oxidation. This work not only prepares a synthetic model of a bio-inspired oxygen-evolving center but also provides an effective strategy to realize light-driven overall water splitting.

A tetranuclear cobalt(ii) phosphate possessing a D4R core: an efficient water oxidation catalyst

The reaction of Co(OAc)2·4H2O with a sterically hindered phosphate ester, LH2, afforded a tetranuclear complex, [CoII(L)(CH3CN)]4·5CH3CN (1) [LH2 = 2,6-(diphenylmethyl)-4-isopropyl-phenyl phosphate]. The molecular structure of 1 reveals that it is a tetranuclear assembly where the Co(ii) centers are present in the alternate corners of a cube. The four Co(ii) centers are held together by four di-anionic [L]2- ligands. The fourth coordination site on Co(ii) is taken by an acetonitrile ligand. Changing the Co(ii) precursor from Co(OAc)2·4H2O to Co(NO3)2·6H2O afforded a mononuclear complex [CoII(LH)2(CH3CN)2(MeOH)2](MeOH)2 (2). In 2, the Co(ii) centre is surrounded by two monoanionic [LH]- ligands and a pair of methanol and acetonitrile solvents in a six-coordinate arrangement. 1 has been found to be an efficient catalyst for electrochemical water oxidation under highly basic conditions while the mononuclear analogue, 2, does not respond to electrochemical water oxidation. The tetranuclear catalyst has excellent electrochemical stability and longevity, as established by chronoamperometry and >1000 cycle durability tests under highly alkaline conditions. Excellent current densities of 1 and 10 mA cm-2 were achieved with overpotentials of 354 and 452 mV respectively. The turnover frequency of this catalyst was calculated to be 5.23 s-1 with an excellent faradaic efficiency of 97%, indicating the selective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) occurring with the aid of this catalyst. A mechanistic insight into the higher activity of complex 1 towards the OER compared to that of complex 2 is also provided using density functional theory based calculations.

Cobalt Carbonate as an Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Co^II salts in the presence of HCO₃ ^- /CO₃ ^2- in aqueous solutions act as electrocatalysts for water oxidation. It comprises of several key steps: (i) A relatively small wave at E_pa ≈0.71 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) owing to the Co^III/II redox couple. (ii) A second wave is observed at E_pa ≈1.10 V with a considerably larger current. In which the Co^III undergoes oxidation to form a Co^IV species. The large current is attributed to catalytic oxidation of HCO₃ ^- /CO₃ ^2- to HCO₄ ^- . (iii) A process with very large currents at >1.2 V owing to the formation of Co^V (CO₃ )₃ ^- , which oxidizes both water and HCO₃ ^- /CO₃ ^2- . These processes depend on [Co^II ], [NaHCO₃ ], and pH. Chronoamperometry at 1.3 V gives a green deposit. It acts as a heterogeneous catalyst for water oxidation. DFT calculations point out that Coⁿ (CO₃ )₃ ^n-6 , n=4, 5 are attainable at potentials similar to those experimentally observed.

Space Craft-like Octanuclear Co(II)-Silsesquioxane Nanocages: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic Properties, Solution Behavior, and Catalytic Activity for Hydroboration of Ketones

Two novel space craft-like octanuclear Co(II)-silsesquioxane nanocages, {Co₈[(MeSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8a) and {Co₈[(PhSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8b) (SD = SunDi; Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), have been constructed from two similar multidentate silsesquioxane ligands assisted with a pyrazole ligand. The Co₈ skeleton consists of eight tetrahedral Co(II) ions arranged in a ring and is further capped by two (MeSiO₂)₄ ligands up and down. The auxiliary dmpz^- ligands seal the ring finally. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed SD/Co8a and SD/Co8b are highly stable in CH₂Cl₂. Magnetic analysis implies that SD/Co8a announces antiferromagnetic interactions between Co(II) ions. Moreover, both of them display good homogeneous catalytic activity for hydroboration of ketones in the presence of pinacolborane under mild conditions.

Polynuclear Cobalt Complexes as Catalysts for Light-Driven Water Oxidation: A Review of Recent Advances

Photochemical water oxidation, as a half-reaction of water splitting, represents a great challenge towards the construction of artificial photosynthetic systems. Complexes of first-row transition metals have attracted great attention in the last decade due to their pronounced catalytic efficiency in water oxidation, comparable to that exhibited by classical platinum-group metal complexes. Cobalt, being an abundant and relatively cheap metal, has rich coordination chemistry allowing construction of a wide range of polynuclear architectures for the catalytic purposes. This review covers recent advances in application of cobalt complexes as (pre)catalysts for water oxidation in the model catalytic system comprising [Ru(bpy)3]2+ as a photosensitizer and S2O82− as a sacrificial electron acceptor. The catalytic parameters are summarized and discussed in view of the structures of the catalysts. Special attention is paid to the degradation of molecular catalysts under catalytic conditions and the experimental methods and techniques used to control their degradation as well as the leaching of cobalt ions.

Poly[bis(μ-4-aminobenzenesulfonato-κ2 N:O)diaquacobalt(II)]

The title compound, [Co(C6H6NO3S)2(H2O)2] n , was obtained from a mixture of Co(NO3)2·6H2O and a previously synthesized salt, namely CyNH3·NH2PhSO3, in a 1:1 ratio (Cy = cyclohexyl; Ph = phenyl). The crystal structure consists of a three-dimensional supramolecular framework, in which polymeric layers are interconnected via N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonding. The polymeric layers are formed by an interconnection of neighbouring cobalt(II) cations via NH2PhSO3 − bridges. Each cobalt(II) cation is surrounded by four NH2PhSO3 − moieties and two water molecules, leading to a distorted octahedral environment.

Self-assembly, structures, magnetic properties and solution behaviors of six mixed-valence cobalt clusters

Six novel mixed-valence cobalt clusters with flexible {Co^II_xCo^III_y} cores have been constructed via in situ synthesis and stepwise synthesis routes. Their solution behaviors and possible assembly evolutions were detected by HRESI-MS. All of them also show interesting magnetic behaviours.
