Abstract
Functionalising organic molecular photoswitches with metal complexes has been shown to alter and enhance their switching states. These organometallic photoswitches provide a promising basis for novel smart molecular materials and molecular electronic devices. We have detailed the synthesis and characterisation of mono- and bimetallic half-sandwich ruthenium and iron complexes functionalised with alkynyl dihydropyrenes (DHP). Their electronic and photophysical properties were determined by the use of chemical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The introduction of the metal alkynyl moiety allows access to additional redox and protonation states not accessible by the DHP alone. An additional metal alkynyl moiety inhibits observable photochromic switching. Analysis of the NIR and IR bands in the mixed valence complexes suggests there is a high degree of charge delocalisation across the DHP.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) define a versatile structural paradigm combining attractive properties such as crystallinity, porosity, and chemical and structural modularity which are valuable for various applications. For the incorporation of COFs into optoelectronic devices, efficient charge carrier transport and intrinsic conductivity are often essential. Here, we report the synthesis of two imine-linked two-dimensional COFs, WTA and WBDT, featuring a redox-active Wurster-type motif based on the twisted tetragonal N,N,N',N'-tetraphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine node. By condensing this unit with either terephthalaldehyde (TA) or benzodithiophene dialdehyde (BDT), COFs featuring a dual-pore kagome-type structure were obtained as highly crystalline materials with large specific surface areas and mesoporosity. In addition, the experimentally determined high conduction band energies of both COFs render them suitable candidates for oxidative doping. The incorporation of a benzodithiophene linear building block into the COF allows for high intrinsic macroscopic conductivity. Both anisotropic and average isotropic electrical conductivities were determined with van der Pauw measurements using oriented films and pressed pellets, respectively. Furthermore, the impact of different dopants such as F4TCNQ, antimony pentachloride and iodine on the conductivities of the resulting doped COFs was studied. By using the strong organic acceptor F4TCNQ, a massive increase of the radical cation density (up to 0.5 radicals per unit cell) and long-term stable electrical conductivity as high as 3.67 S m-1 were achieved for the anisotropic transport in an oriented film, one of the highest for any doped COF to date. Interestingly, no significant differences between isotropic and anisotropic charge transport were found in films and pressed pellets. This work expands the list of possible building nodes for electrically conducting COFs from planar systems to twisted geometries. The achievement of high and stable electrical conductivity paves the way for possible applications of new COFs in organic (opto)electronics.

Abstract
A series of organometallic complexes [Cl(dppe)2 Ru-C≡C-(3-R-C4 H2 S)-C≡C-Ru(dppe)2 Cl] (3-R-C4 H2 S=3-substituted thienyl moiety; R=-H, -C2 H5 , -C3 H7 , -C4 H9 , -C6 H13 , -OMe, -CN in 5 a-5 g respectively) have been synthesized by systematic variation of 3-substituents at the thienylethynyl bridging unit. The diruthenum(II) wire-like complexes (5 a-5 g) have been achieved by the reaction of thienylethynyl bridging units, HC≡C-(3-R-C4 H2 S)-C≡CH (4 a-4 g) with cis-[Ru(dppe)2 Cl2 ]. The wire-like diruthenium(II) complexes undergo two consecutive electrochemical oxidation processes in the potential range of 0.0 - 0.8 V. Interestingly, the wave separation between the two redox waves is greatly influenced by the substituents at the 3-position of the thienylethynyl. Thus, the substitution on 3-position of the thienylethynyl bridging unit plays a pivotal role for tuning the electronic properties. To understand the electronic behavior, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the selected diruthenium wire-like complexes (5 a-5 e) with different alkyl appendages are performed. The theoretical data demonstrate that incorporation of alkyl groups to the thienylethynyl entity leaves unsymmetrical spin densities, thus affecting the electronic properties. The voltammetric features of the other two Ru(II) alkynyl complexes 5 f and 5 g (with -OMe and -CN group respectively) show an apparent dependence on the electronic properties. The electronic properties in the redox conjugate, (5 a+ ) with Kc of 3.9×106 are further examined by UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR studies, showing optical responses in NIR region along with changes in "-Ru-C≡C-" vibrational stretching frequency. The origin of the observed electronic transition has been assigned based on time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations.

The methods developed allowed the synthesis of the corresponding σ-4-benzothiadiazolylethynyl complex Cp(CO)2Fe–CC–(4-C6H3N2S) as well. Eventually, synthetic approaches to σ-alkynyl iron complexes of the type Cp(CO)2Fe–CC–R (R = ortho-, meta-, para-pyridyl, 4-benzothiadiazol-2,1,3-yl) based on the Pd/Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions were elaborated. Two approaches were developed for the synthesis of iron σ-pyridylethynyl complexes based on Pd/Cu- and Pd-catalyzed Fe–C coupling reactions.![]()

Abstract
A series of arylene-vinylene π-conjugated terpyridyl ruthenium(ii) complexes, [Ru(PPh3)2Cl(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (1-4; tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl, where Ar = phenyl, tolyl, 1-naphthyl and 9-anthracenyl as substituents at the 4' position of tpy), have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The influence of the electronic nature of arylene groups on their photophysical and electrochemical properties has been investigated to understand the electronic interaction between the metal-organic redox centers. Furthermore, a σ-donor phenylacetylide group has been incorporated to accomplish [Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ru(PPh3)2(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (5-8) complexes by the substitution of a coordinated chloride ligand and to investigate the change in their redox and photophysical properties. DFT studies have been performed to gain an insight into their electronic properties by determining the HOMO-LUMO energy levels and frontier molecular orbitals of all the synthesized Ru(ii) complexes.

Abstract
Two related three-membered series of nonlinear aminophenylferrocene and diphenylaminoferrocene complexes were prepared and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The first series consists of 4-(diphenylamino)phenylferrocene (TPA-Fc, 1a), its dimethoxy-substituted tetraphenylphenylenediamine derivative (M2TPPD-Fc, 1c), and the triphenylamine-bridged bis(ferrocenyl) complex (Fc-TPA-Fc, 1b). The second series involves bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aminoferrocene (M2DPA-Fc, 1d), 4-methoxyphenylaminoferrocene (MPA-Fc) with N-phenyl-appended terminal TPA (1e), and the corresponding bis(MPA-Fc) complex with bridging TPA (1f). The structure of complex 1d was further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Combined investigations, based on anodic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, were conducted to illustrate the influence of the integration of multiple redox-active components on the sequential oxidation of these complexes. The first anodic steps in 1a-1f are localized preferentially on the ferrocenyl units, followed by oxidation of the TPA or TPPD moieties (absent in 1d). Irreversible oxidation of the ferrocene-appended strong donor DPA/MPA units in 1d-1f terminates the anodic series. The one-electron oxidation of the triphenylamine-bridged diferrocenyl (1b) and bis(phenylaminoferrocenyl) (1f) complexes triggers their facile redox disproportionation to dicationic bis(ferrocenium) products.

Abstract
Four bridged cyclometalated diruthenium systems are highlighted in this Frontier article, including strongly-coupled diruthenium complexes with a short phen-1,4-diyl or a planar pyren-2,7-diyl bridge, redox asymmetric diruthenium complexes characterized by different terminal ligands on the two ends, diruthenium complexes with a urea bridge that allows modulating the degree of electronic coupling, and those with a redox-active amine bridge with varying electronic structures. These complexes posess redox couples with low potentials and intense intervalence charge transfer absorptions in the near-infrared region in the one-electron-oxidized mixed-valent state. They are appealing not only for providing a platform for fundamental electron transfer studies but also as molecular materials with multi-stage redox switching properties.
