Structural and Magnetic Transitions in CaCo3V4O12 Perovskite at Extreme Conditions

Synthesis of Ilmenite-type ε-Mn2O3 and Its Properties

In contrast to the corundum-type A₂X₃ structure, which has only one crystallographic site available for trivalent cations (e.g., in hematite), the closely related ABX₃ ilmenite-type structure comprises two different octahedrally coordinated positions that are usually filled with differently charged ions (e.g., in Fe²⁺Ti⁴⁺O₃ ilmenite). Here, we report a synthesis of the first binary ilmenite-type compound fabricated from a simple transition-metal oxide (Mn₂O₃) at high-pressure high-temperature (HP-HT) conditions. We experimentally established that, at normal conditions, the ilmenite-type Mn²⁺Mn⁴⁺O₃ (ε-Mn₂O₃) is an n-type semiconductor with an indirect narrow band gap of E_g = 0.55 eV. Comparative investigations of the electronic properties of ε-Mn₂O₃ and previously discovered quadruple perovskite ζ-Mn₂O₃ phase were performed using X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic ordering in ε-Mn₂O₃ below 210 K. The synthesis of ε-Mn₂O₃ indicates that HP-HT conditions can induce a charge disproportionation in simple transition-metal oxides A₂O₃, and potentially various mixed-valence polymorphs of these oxides, for example, with ilmenite-type, LiNbO₃-type, perovskite-type, and other structures, could be stabilized at HP-HT conditions.

Structural Stability and Properties of Marokite-Type γ-Mn3O4

We synthesized single crystals of marokite (CaMn₂O₄)-type orthorhombic manganese (II,III) oxide, γ-Mn₃O₄, in a multianvil apparatus at pressures of 10-24 GPa. The magnetic, electronic, and optical properties of the crystals were investigated at ambient pressure. It was found that γ-Mn₃O₄ is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap E_g of 0.96 eV and two antiferromagnetic transitions (T_N) at ∼200 and ∼55 K. The phase stability of the γ-Mn₃O₄ crystals was examined in the pressure range of 0-60 GPa using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A bulk modulus of γ-Mn₃O₄ was determined to be B₀ = 235.3(2) GPa with B' = 2.6(6). The γ-Mn₃O₄ phase persisted over the whole pressure range studied and did not transform or decompose upon laser heating of the sample to ∼3500 K at 60 GPa. This result seems surprising, given the high-pressure structural diversity of iron oxides with similar stoichiometries. With an increase in pressure, the degree of distortion of MnO₆ polyhedra decreased. Furthermore, there are signs indicating a limited charge transfer between the Mn³⁺ ions in the octahedra and the Mn²⁺ ions in the trigonal prisms. Our results demonstrate that the high-pressure behavior of the structural, electronic, and chemical properties of manganese oxides strongly differs from that of iron oxides with similar stoichiometries.

A combinatory ferroelectric compound bridging simple ABO3 and A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite

The simple ABO₃ and A-site-ordered AA′₃B₄O₁₂ perovskites represent two types of classical perovskite functional materials. There are well-known simple perovskites with ferroelectric properties, while there is still no report of ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking transition in A-site-ordered quadruple perovskites. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of an A-site-ordered perovskite PbHg₃Ti₄O₁₂, the only known quadruple perovskite that transforms from high-temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase to low-temperature non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric phase. The coordination chemistry of Hg²⁺ is changed from square planar as in typical A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite to a rare stereo type with 8 ligands in PbHg₃Ti₄O₁₂. Thus PbHg₃Ti₄O₁₂ appears to be a combinatory link from simple ABO₃ perovskites to A-site-ordered AA′₃Ti₄O₁₂ perovskites, sharing both displacive ferroelectricity with former and structure coordination with latter. This is the only example so far showing ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking phase transition in AA′₃B₄O₁₂-type A-site-ordered perovskites, and opens a direction to search for ferroelectric materials.

There are few reports of ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking transition in A-site-ordered quadruple perovskites. Here, the authors find one with phase transition from a high-temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase to a low-temperature non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric phase in a high pressure synthesized compound.

Pressure tuning of charge ordering in iron oxide

A Verwey-type charge-ordering transition in magnetite at 120 K leads to the formation of linear units of three iron ions with one shared electron, called trimerons. The recently-discovered iron pentoxide (Fe₄O₅) comprising mixed-valent iron cations at octahedral chains, demonstrates another unusual charge-ordering transition at 150 K involving competing formation of iron trimerons and dimerons. Here, we experimentally show that applied pressure can tune the charge-ordering pattern in Fe₄O₅ and strongly affect the ordering temperature. We report two charge-ordered phases, the first of which may comprise both dimeron and trimeron units, whereas, the second exhibits an overall dimerization involving both the octahedral and trigonal-prismatic chains of iron in the crystal structure. We link the dramatic change in the charge-ordering pattern in the second phase to redistribution of electrons between the octahedral and prismatic iron chains, and propose that the average oxidation state of the iron cations can pre-determine a charge-ordering pattern.

The charge order transition of commonly known magnetite has only recently been unraveled. Here, the measurement of the low-temperature high-pressure phase diagram of a related material (Fe₄O₅) elucidates the interplay of average oxidation state and charge-ordering phenomena in the iron oxide family.
