Synthesis and multi-scale properties of PuO2 nanoparticles: recent advances and open questions

Due to the increased attention given to actinide nanomaterials, the question of their structure-property relationship is on the spotlight of recent publications. Plutonium oxide (PuO₂) particularly plays a central role in nuclear energetics and a comprehensive knowledge about its properties when nanosizing is of paramount interest to understand its behaviour in environmental migration schemes but also for the development of advanced nuclear energy systems underway. The element plutonium further stimulates the curiosity of scientists due to the unique physical and chemical properties it exhibits around the periodic table. PuO₂ crystallizes in the fluorite structure of the face-centered cubic system for which the properties can be significantly affected when shrinking. Identifying the formation mechanism of PuO₂ nanoparticles, their related atomic, electronic and crystalline structures, and their reactivity in addition to their nanoscale properties, appears to be a fascinating and challenging ongoing topic, whose recent advances are discussed in this review.

Size and structure of hexanuclear plutonium oxo-hydroxo clusters in aqueous solution from synchrotron analysis

The size and shape of a water-soluble hexanuclear plutonium cluster were probed by combining synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). A specific setup coupling both techniques and dedicated to radioactive samples on the MARS beamline endstation at Synchrotron SOLEIL is described. The plutonium hexanuclear cores are well stabilized by the 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid ligands and this allows a good evaluation of the setup to probe the very small plutonium core. The results show that, in spite of the constrained conditions required to avoid any risk of sample dispersion, the flux and the sample environment are optimized to obtain a very good signal-to-noise ratio, allowing the detection of small plutonium aggregates in an aqueous phase. The structure of the well defined hexanuclear cluster has been confirmed by EXAFS measurements in solution and correlated with SAXS data processing and modelling. An iterative comparison of classical fit models (Guinier or sphere form factor) with the experimental results allowed a better interpretation of the SAXS signal that will be relevant for future work under environmentally relevant conditions.

Unlocking Phase Diagrams for Molybdenum and Tungsten Nanoclusters and Prediction of their Formation Constants

Understanding and controlling aqueous speciation of metal oxides are key for the discovery and development of novel materials, and challenge both experimental and computational approaches. Here we present a computational method, called POMSimulator, which is able to predict speciation phase diagrams (Conc. vs pH) for multispecies chemical equilibria in solution, and which we apply to molybdenum and tungsten isopolyoxoanions (IPAs). Starting from the MO₄ monomers, and considering dimers, trimers, and larger species, the chemical reaction networks involved in the formation of [H₃₂Mo₃₆O₁₂₈]^8- and [W₁₂O₄₂]^12- are sampled in an automatic manner. This information is used for setting up ∼10⁵ speciation models, and from there, we generate the speciation phase diagrams, which show an insightful picture of the behavior of IPAs in aqueous solution. Furthermore, we predict the values of 107 formation constants for a diversity of molybdenum and tungsten molecular oxides. Among these species, we could include several pentagonal-shaped species and very reactive tungsten intermediates as well. Last but not least, the calibration employed for correcting the density functional theory (DFT) Gibbs energies is remarkably similar for both metals, which suggests that a general rule might exist for correcting computed free energies for other metals.

Prediction of Solution Behavior via Calorimetric Measurements Allows for Detailed Elucidation of Polyoxometalate Transformation

The solution behavior of a polyoxometalate cluster, LiNa-U₂₄Pp₁₂ (Li₂₄Na₂₄[(UO₂O₂)₂₄(P₂O₇)₁₂]) that consists of 24 uranyl ions, peroxide groups, and 12 pyrophosphate linkers, was successfully predicted based on new thermodynamic results using a calorimetric method recently described for uranyl peroxide nanoclusters (UPCs), molybdenum blues, and molybdenum browns. The breakdown of LiNa-U₂₄Pp₁₂ and formation of U₂₄ (Li₂₄[UO₂O₂OH]₂₄) was monitored in situ via Raman spectroscopy using a custom heating apparatus. A combination of analytical techniques confirmed the simultaneous existence of U₂₄Pp₁₂ and U₂₄ midway through the conversion process and U₂₄ as the single end product. The application of a molecular weight filter resulted in a complete and successful separation of UPCs from solution and, in conjunction with DOSY results, confirmed the presence of large intermediate cluster building blocks.

Reactivity, Formation, and Solubility of Polyoxometalates Probed by Calorimetry

Room temperature calorimetry methods were developed to describe the energy landscapes of six polyoxometalates (POMs), Li-U24, Li-U28, K-U28, Li/K-U60, Mo132, and Mo154, in terms of three components: enthalpy of dissolution (ΔHdiss), enthalpy of formation of aqueous POMs (ΔHf,(aq)), and enthalpy of formation of POM crystals (ΔHf,(c)). ΔHdiss is controlled by a combination of cation solvation enthalpy and the favorability of cation interactions with binding sites on the POM. In the case of the four uranyl peroxide POMs studied, clusters with hydroxide bridges have lower ΔHf,(aq) and are more stable than those containing only peroxide bridges. In general for POMs, the combination of calorimetric results and synthetic observations suggest that spherical topologies may be more stable than wheel-like clusters, and ΔHf,(aq) can be accurately estimated using only ΔHf,(c) values owing to the dominance of the clusters in determining the energetics of POM crystals.

Detection and identification of solids, surfaces, and solutions of uranium using vibrational spectroscopy

The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of uranium speciation using vibrational spectroscopy methods including Raman and IR. Uranium is a naturally occurring, radioactive element that is utilized in the nuclear energy and national security sectors. Fundamental uranium chemistry is also an active area of investigation due to ongoing questions regarding the participation of 5f orbitals in bonding, variation in oxidation states and coordination environments, and unique chemical and physical properties. Importantly, uranium speciation affects fate and transportation in the environment, influences bioavailability and toxicity to human health, controls separation processes for nuclear waste, and impacts isotopic partitioning and geochronological dating. This review article provides a thorough discussion of the vibrational modes for U(IV), U(V), and U(VI) and applications of infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies in the identification and detection of both naturally occurring and synthetic uranium species in solid and solution states. The vibrational frequencies of the uranyl moiety, including both symmetric and asymmetric stretches are sensitive to the coordinating ligands and used to identify individual species in water, organic solvents, and ionic liquids or on the surface of materials. Additionally, vibrational spectroscopy allows for the in situ detection and real-time monitoring of chemical reactions involving uranium. Finally, techniques to enhance uranium species signals with vibrational modes are discussed to expand the application of vibrational spectroscopy to biological, environmental, inorganic, and materials scientists and engineers.

A General Approach to Access Morphologies of Polyoxometalates in Solution by Using SAXS: An Ab Initio Modeling Protocol

Herein, we reported a general protocol for an ab initio modeling approach to deduce structure information of polyoxometalates (POMs) in solutions from scattering data collected by the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. To validate the protocol, the morphologies of a serious of known POMs in either aqueous or organic solvents were analyzed. The obtained particle morphologies were compared and confirmed with previous reported crystal structures. To extend the feasibility of the protocol to an unknown system of aqueous solutions of Na₂ MoO₄ with the pH ranging from -1 to 8.35, the formation of {Mo₃₆ } clusters was probed, identified, and confirmed by SAXS. The approach was further optimized with a multi-processing capability to achieve fast analysis of experimental data, thereby, facilitating in situ studies of formations of POMs in solutions. The advantage of this approach is to generate intuitive 3D models of POMs in solutions without confining information such as symmetries and possible sizes.
