Effect of Molecular Guest Binding on the d–d Transitions of Ni2+ of CPO-27-Ni: A Combined UV–Vis, Resonant-Valence-to-Core X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, and Theoretical Study

Unsaturated NiII Centers Mediated the Coordination Activation of Benzylamine for Enhancing Photocatalytic Activity over Ultrathin Ni MOF-74 Nanosheets

Creating accessible unsaturated active sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) holds great promise for developing highly efficient catalysts. Herein, ultrathin Ni MOF-74 nanosheets (NMNs) with high-density coordinatively unsaturated Ni^II centers are prepared as a photocatalyst. The results of in situ ATR-IR, Raman, UV-vis DRS, and XPS suggest that abundant Ni^II centers can act as the active sites for boosting benzylamine (BA) activation via forming -Ni-NH₂- coordination intermediates. The generation of coordination intermediates assists the transfer of photo-generated holes to BA molecules for producing BA cation free radicals, better impelling the breaking of N-H bonds and the photooxidation of BA molecules. The photo-generated electrons further activate O₂ molecules to O₂^•- radicals for triggering the reaction. The experiments reveal that the coordination activation of BA molecules may be a rate-determining step on NMNs rather than the adsorption and activation of O₂ molecules. Moreover, NMNs possess a better ability for the separation of photo-generated carriers in comparison with bulk Ni MOF-74 (NMBs). As a result, NMNs achieve a kinetic rate constant of 0.538 h^-1 for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of BA under visible light, about 50 times higher than that of NMBs (0.0011 h^-1). Finally, a probable synergetic catalytic mechanism with coordination activation and photocatalysis is discussed on a molecular level. This study not only highlights the importance of coordination activation for heterogeneous photocatalysis but also affords an inspiration for building ultrathin MOF nanosheets.

A Copper(I)-Thioarsenate(III) Inorganic Framework Directed by [Ni(en)3]2

One novel three-dimensional (3-D) copper(I)-thioarsenate(III) [Ni(en)₃]Cu₄As₄S₉ (1, en = ethylenediamine) has been solvothermally prepared with the utilization of the in situ formation of [Ni(en)₃]²⁺ complex as structure-directing agent (SDA). 1 contains cubane-like [Cu₈S₁₂]^16- clusters and rare tetrameric [As₄S₉]^6- units, which are interconnected to generate the first example of a 3-D anionic framework [Cu₄As₄S₉]_n^2n-, topologically identical to pyrite, and having large channels filled by [Ni(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. 1 is a potential wide-band-gap semiconductor with an energy gap of 1.91 eV that exhibits selectively photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation. The density functional theory calculation, photocurrent response, and magnetic properties of 1 were also investigated.

Ligand influence versus electronic configuration of d-metal ion in determining the fate of NIR emission from LnIII ions: a case study with CuII, NiII and ZnII complexes

Based on fifteen lanthanide complexes, where Cu, Ni and Zn ions with a Schiff-base ligand act as an antenna, it is demonstrated that electronic configuration of the d-block metal ion is very crucial for obtaining emission in NIR region.

Probing Sulfur Chemical and Electronic Structure with Experimental Observation and Quantitative Theoretical Prediction of Kα and Valence-to-Core Kβ X-ray Emission Spectroscopy

An extensive experimental and theoretical study of the Kα and Kβ high-resolution X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) of sulfur-bearing systems is presented. This study encompasses a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds, including numerous experimental spectra from both prior published work and new measurements. Employing a linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) approach, strong quantitative agreement is found in the calculation of energy shifts of the core-to-core Kα as well as the full range of spectral features in the valence-to-core Kβ spectrum. The ability to accurately calculate the sulfur Kα energy shift supports the use of sulfur Kα XES as a bulk-sensitive tool for assessing sulfur speciation. The fine structure of the sulfur Kβ spectrum, in conjunction with the theoretical results, is shown to be sensitive to the local electronic structure including effects of symmetry, ligand type and number, and, in the case of organosulfur compounds, to the nature of the bonded organic moiety. This agreement between theory and experiment, augmented by the potential for high-access XES measurements with the latest generation of laboratory-based spectrometers, demonstrates the possibility of broad analytical use of XES for sulfur and nearby third-row elements. The effective solution of the forward problem, i.e., successful prediction of detailed spectra from known molecular structure, also suggests future use of supervised machine learning approaches to experimental inference, as has seen recent interest for interpretation of X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES).

From IR to x-rays: gaining molecular level insights on metal-organic frameworks through spectroscopy

This topical review focuses on the application of several types of spectroscopy methods to a class of solid state materials called metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are self-assembled, porous crystalline materials composed of metal cluster nodes linked through coordination bonds with organic or organometallic molecular constituents. Their unique host-guest properties make them attractive for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensing and others. While much research focuses on the development and application of these materials, fundamental studies of MOF properties and molecular level host-guest interactions behind their functionality have become a significant research direction on its own. Spectroscopy methods are now ubiquitous tools in this pursuit. This review focuses on the application of three classes of spectroscopy methods to MOF materials: vibrational, optical electronic and x-ray spectroscopies. Following brief introductions to each method that include pertinent theory and experimental considerations, we present a broad overview of the types of MOF systems that have been studied, with specific examples and important new molecular level insights highlighted along the way. The current status of spectroscopic studies of MOFs is presented at the end along with some perspectives on the future directions in this area of research.
