Microporous Lead–Organic Framework for Selective CO2 Adsorption and Heterogeneous Catalysis

A review on MOFs synthesis and effect of their structural characteristics for hydrogen adsorption

Climate change is causing a rise in the need to transition from fossil fuels to renewable and clean energy such as hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. The issue with hydrogen's practical storage, however, prevents it from being widely used as an energy source. Current solutions, such as liquefied and compressed hydrogen storage, are insufficient to meet the U.S. Department of Energy's (US DOE) extensive on-board application requirements. Thus, a backup strategy involving material-based storage is required. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) belong to the category of crystalline porous materials that have seen rapid interest in the field of energy storage due to their large surface area, high pore volume, and modifiable structure. Therefore, advanced technologies employed in the construction of MOFs, such as solvothermal, mechanochemical, microwave assisted, and sonochemical methods are reviewed. Finally, this review discussed the selected factors and structural characteristics of MOFs, which affect the hydrogen capacity.

Novel Cu(II)-based metal-organic framework STAM-1 as a sulfur host for Li-S batteries

Due to the increasing demand for energy storage devices, the development of high-energy density batteries is very necessary. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have gained wide interest due to their particularly high-energy density. However, even this type of battery still needs to be improved. Novel Cu(II)-based metal-organic framework STAM-1 was synthesized and applied as a composite cathode material as a sulfur host in the lithium-sulfur battery with the aim of regulating the redox kinetics of sulfur cathodes. Prepared STAM-1 was characterized by infrared spectroscopy at ambient temperature and after in-situ heating, elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and textural properties by nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption at - 196 and 0 °C, respectively. Results of the SEM showed that crystals of STAM-1 created a flake-like structure, the surface was uniform and porous enough for electrolyte and sulfur infiltration. Subsequently, STAM-1 was used as a sulfur carrier in the cathode construction of a Li-S battery. The charge/discharge measurements of the novel S/STAM-1/Super P/PVDF cathode demonstrated the initial discharge capacity of 452 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C and after 100 cycles of 430 mAh g-1, with Coulombic efficiency of 97% during the whole cycling procedure at 0.5 C. It was confirmed that novel Cu-based STAM-1 flakes could accelerate the conversion of sulfur species in the cathode material.

Sr(II) and Ba(II) Alkaline Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks (AE-MOFs) for Selective Gas Adsorption, Energy Storage, and Environmental Application

Two new alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing Sr(II) (UPJS-15) or Ba(II) (UPJS-16) cations and extended tetrahedral linker (MTA) were synthesized and characterized in detail (UPJS stands for University of Pavol Jozef Safarik). Single-crystal X-ray analysis (SC-XRD) revealed that the materials are isostructural and, in their frameworks, one-dimensional channels are present with the size of ~11 × 10 Ų. The activation process of the compounds was studied by the combination of in situ heating infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal analysis (TA) and in situ high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD), which confirmed the stability of compounds after desolvation. The prepared compounds were investigated as adsorbents of different gases (Ar, N₂, CO₂, and H₂). Nitrogen and argon adsorption measurements showed that UPJS-15 has S_BET area of 1321 m² g^-1 (Ar) / 1250 m² g^-1 (N₂), and UPJS-16 does not adsorb mentioned gases. From the environmental application, the materials were studied as CO₂ adsorbents, and both compounds adsorb CO₂ with a maximum capacity of 22.4 wt.% @ 0 °C; 14.7 wt.% @ 20 °C and 101 kPa for UPJS-15 and 11.5 wt.% @ 0°C; 8.4 wt.% @ 20 °C and 101 kPa for UPJS-16. According to IAST calculations, UPJS-16 shows high selectivity (50 for CO₂/N₂ 10:90 mixture and 455 for CO₂/N₂ 50:50 mixture) and can be applied as CO₂ adsorbent from the atmosphere even at low pressures. The increased affinity of materials for CO₂ was also studied by DFT modelling, which revealed that the primary adsorption sites are coordinatively unsaturated sites on metal ions, azo bonds, and phenyl rings within the MTA linker. Regarding energy storage, the materials were studied as hydrogen adsorbents, but the materials showed low H₂ adsorption properties: 0.19 wt.% for UPJS-15 and 0.04 wt.% for UPJS-16 @ -196 °C and 101 kPa. The enhanced CO₂/H₂ selectivity could be used to scavenge carbon dioxide from hydrogen in WGS and DSR reactions. The second method of applying samples in the area of energy storage was the use of UPJS-15 as an additive in a lithium-sulfur battery. Cyclic performance at a cycling rate of 0.2 C showed an initial discharge capacity of 337 mAh g^-1, which decreased smoothly to 235 mAh g^-1 after 100 charge/discharge cycles.

Novel Lanthanide(III) Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structure, Gas Adsorption, and Magnetic Properties

The present work focuses on the hydrothermal synthesis and properties of porous coordination polymers of metal-porphyrin framework (MPF) type, namely, {[Pr4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-10), {[Eu/Sm(H2TPPS)]·H3O+·16H2O} n (UPJS-11), and {[Ce4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-12) (H2TPPS = 4,4',4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakisbenzenesulfonate(4-)). The compounds were characterized using several analytical techniques: infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric measurements, elemental analysis, gas adsorption measurements, and single-crystal structure analysis (SXRD). The results of SXRD revealed a three-dimensional open porous framework containing crossing cavities propagating along all crystallographic axes. Coordination of H2TPPS4- ligands with Ln(III) ions leads to the formation of 1D polymeric chains propagating along the c crystallographic axis. Argon sorption measurements at -186 °C show that the activated MPFs have apparent BET surface areas of 260 m2 g-1 (UPJS-10) and 230 m2 g-1 (UPJS-12). Carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms at 0 °C show adsorption capacities up to 1 bar of 9.8 wt % for UPJS-10 and 8.6 wt % for UPJS-12. At a temperature of 20 °C, the respective CO2 adsorption capacities decreased to 6.95 and 5.99 wt %, respectively. The magnetic properties of UPJS-10 are characterized by the presence of a close-lying nonmagnetic ground singlet and excited doublet states in the electronic spectrum of Pr(III) ions. A much larger energy difference was suggested between the two lowest Kramers doublets of Ce(III) ions in UPJS-12. Finally, the analysis of X-band EPR spectra revealed the presence of radical spins, which were tentatively assigned to be originating from the porphyrin ligands.

Zinc(ii) and cadmium(ii) amorphous metal-organic frameworks (aMOFs): study of activation process and high-pressure adsorption of greenhouse gases

Two novel amorphous metal-organic frameworks (aMOFs) with chemical composition {[Zn₂(MTA)]·4H₂O·3DMF} _n (UPJS-13) and {[Cd₂(MTA)]·5H₂O·4DMF} _n (UPJS-14) built from Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) ions and extended tetrahedral tetraazo-tetracarboxylic acid (H₄MTA) as a linker were prepared and characterised. Nitrogen adsorption measurements were performed on as-synthesized (AS), ethanol exchanged (EX) and freeze-dried (FD) materials at different activation temperatures of 60, 80, 100, 120, 150 and 200 °C to obtain the best textural properties. The largest surface areas of 830 m² g^-1 for UPJS-13 (FD) and 1057 m² g^-1 for UPJS-14 (FD) were calculated from the nitrogen adsorption isotherms for freeze-dried materials activated at mild activation temperature (80 °C). Subsequently, the prepared compounds were tested as adsorbents of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, measured at high pressures. The maximal adsorption capacities were 30.01 wt% CO₂ and 4.84 wt% CH₄ for UPJS-13 (FD) and 24.56 wt% CO₂ and 6.38 wt% CH₄ for UPJS-14 (FD) at 20 bar and 30 °C.

A series of four novel alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks constructed of Ca(ii), Sr(ii), Ba(ii) ions and tetrahedral MTB linker: structural diversity, stability study and low/high-pressure gas adsorption properties

A series of four novel microporous alkaline earth metal–organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing methanetetrabenzoate linker (MTB) with composition {[Ca₄(μ₈-MTB)₂]·2DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-6), {[Ca₄(μ₄-O)(μ₈-MTB)_3/2(H₂O)₄]·4DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-7), {[Sr₃(μ₇-MTB)_3/2]·4DMF·7H₂O}_n (UPJS-8) and {[Ba₃(μ₇-MTB)_3/2(H₂O)₆]·2DMF·4H₂O}_n (UPJS-9) (UPJS = University of Pavol Jozef Safarik) have been successfully prepared and characterized. The framework stability and thermal robustness of prepared materials were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD). MOFs were tested as adsorbents for different gases at various pressures and temperatures. Nitrogen and argon adsorption showed that the activated samples have moderate BET surface areas: 103 m² g⁻¹ (N₂)/126 m² g⁻¹ (Ar) for UPJS-7′′, 320 m² g⁻¹ (N₂)/358 m² g⁻¹ (Ar) for UPJS-9′′ and UPJS-8′′ adsorbs only a limited amount of N₂ and Ar. It should be noted that all prepared compounds adsorb carbon dioxide with storage capacities ranging from 3.9 to 2.4 wt% at 20 °C and 1 atm, and 16.4–13.5 wt% at 30 °C and 20 bar. Methane adsorption isotherms show no adsorption at low pressures and with increasing pressure the storage capacity increases to 4.0–2.9 wt% of CH₄ at 30 °C and 20 bar. Compounds displayed the highest hydrogen uptake of 3.7–1.8 wt% at −196 °C and 800 Torr among MTB containing MOFs.

Four novel microporous alkaline earth metal–organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing methanetetrabenzoate linker (MTB): UPJS-6, UPJS-7, UPJS-8 and UPJS-9 have been successfully prepared, characterized and tested as adsorbents for different gases.

Efficient Selective Removal of Pb(II) by Using 6-Aminothiouracil-Modified Zr-Based Organic Frameworks: From Experiments to Mechanisms

We report an efficient, reusable, and selective 6-aminothiouracil (ATA)-modified Zr(IV)-based adsorbent (defined as UiO-66-ATA(Zr)) for lead ion removal in water. The adsorption equilibrium time and the maximum sorption capacity of UiO-66-ATA(Zr) for Pb(II) are, respectively, 120 min and 386.98 mg/g at pH 4 and 298 K. The Pb(II) removal rate reaches 96% at 60 min and exceeds 99% at the equilibrium state in the pH range of 2.0-5.8. Hill and pseudo-second-order models can well describe the sorption process. Pb(II) adsorbing onto UiO-66-ATA(Zr) is an irreversible, favorable chemisorption process with multimolecule participation and film diffusion control. The calculations of density functional theory, the experimental results, and the characterization analyses suggest that the binding mechanisms are the chelation and ion-exchange/electrostatic interactions between hydroxyl/amino/sulfhydryl groups of UiO-66-ATA(Zr) and Pb(II). Besides, UiO-66-ATA(Zr) has a better affinity to Pb(II) than the coexisting ions in water and an excellent repeatability at eight cycles of adsorption. Moreover, the thermodynamic study shows that UiO-66-ATA(Zr) adsorbing Pb(II) is an endothermic reaction. Thus, UiO-66-ATA(Zr) is a prospective sorbent for Pb(II) removal under the initiative of environmental protection and water purification, and this work may also provide an idea for industrial catalysis.

A Lead Carboxylate-Azolate Metal-Organic Framework Based on Hexanuclear Clusters: Luminescence and Accelerating the Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Perchlorate

A lead carboxylate-azolate framework, [Pb₃ (μ₄ -O)(L)₂ (H₂ O)] ⋅ 2H₂ O (1), has been constructed from the reaction of 2-methyl-4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) benzoic acid (H₂ L) and Pb(NO₃ )₂ under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 contains an unprecedented hexanuclear cluster [Pb₆ (μ₄ -O)₂ (COO)₄ (CN₄ )₂ ], which as an 8-connected node is connected by 3-connected L linkers to give rise to a three-dimensional framework with an uncommon (3,8)-connected tfz-d; UO₃ topology. Framework 1 possesses strong solid-state yellow luminescence (563 nm), which stems from ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), however, the removal of water molecules in 1 lead to the significant luminescent decrease of the sample. Importantly, in the presence of 1, the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate is significantly accelerated.
