Cs3Cu4In2Cl13 Nanocrystals: A Perovskite-Related Structure with Inorganic Clusters at A Sites

True molecular conformation and structure determination by three-dimensional electron diffraction of PAH by-products potentially useful for electronic applications

The true molecular conformation and the crystal structure of benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene, 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene and 7,16-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]helianthrene were determined ab initio by 3D electron diffraction. All three molecules are remarkable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The molecular conformation of two of these compounds could not be determined via classical spectroscopic methods due to the large size of the molecule and the occurrence of multiple and reciprocally connected aromatic rings. The molecular structure of the third molecule was previously considered provisional. These compounds were isolated as by-products in the synthesis of similar products and were at the same time nanocrystalline and available only in very limited amounts. 3D electron diffraction data, taken from submicrometric single crystals, allowed for direct ab initio structure solution and the unbiased determination of the internal molecular conformation. Detailed synthetic routes and spectroscopic analyses are also discussed. Based on many-body perturbation theory simulations, benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene may be a promising candidate for triplet-triplet annihilation and 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene may be a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission in the solid state.

Cu+ → Mn2+ Energy Transfer in Cu, Mn Coalloyed Cs3ZnCl5 Colloidal Nanocrystals

In this work, we report the hot-injection synthesis of Cs₃ZnCl₅ colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) with tunable amounts of Cu⁺ and Mn²⁺ substituent cations. All the samples had a rodlike morphology, with a diameter of ∼14 nm and a length of ∼30-100 nm. Alloying did not alter the crystal structure of the host Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs, and Cu ions were mainly introduced in the oxidation state +1 according to X-ray photoelectron and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The spectroscopic analysis of unalloyed, Cu-alloyed, Mn-alloyed, and Cu, Mn coalloyed NCs indicated that (i) the Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs have a large band gap of ∼5.35 eV; (ii) Cu(I) aliovalent alloying leads to an absorption shoulder/peak at ∼4.8 eV and cyan photoluminescence (PL) peaked at 2.50 eV; (iii) Mn(II) isovalent alloying leads to weak Mn PL, which intensifies remarkably in the coalloyed samples, prompted by an energy transfer (ET) process between the Cu and Mn centers, favored by the overlap between the lowest (⁶A₁ → ⁴T₁) transition for tetrahedrally coordinated Mn²⁺ and the PL profile from Cu(I) species in the Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs. The efficiency of this ET process reaches a value of 61% for the sample with the highest extent of Mn alloying. The PL quantum yield (QY) values in these Cu, Mn coalloyed NCs are lower at higher Mn contents. The analysis of the Mn PL dynamics in these samples indicates that this PL drop stems from inter-Mn exciton migration, which increases the likelihood of trapping in defect sites, in agreement with previous studies.

Indium(III)/2-benzoylpyridine chemistry: interesting indium(III) bromide-assisted transformations of the ligand

Reactions of 2-benzoylpyridine, (py)(ph)CO, with InX₃ (X = Cl, Br) in EtOH at room temperature have been studied. The InCl₃/(py)(ph)CO system has provided access to complex [InCl₃{(py)(ph)CO}(EtOH)]·{(py)(ph)CO} (1) and the byproduct {(pyH)(ph)CO}Cl (2). The reaction of InBr₃ with (py)(ph)CO has led to a mixture of (L)[InBr₄{(py)(ph)CO}] (3) and [In₂Br₄{(py)(ph)CH(O)}₂(EtOH)₂] (4), where L⁺ is the 9-oxo-indolo[1,2-a]pyridinium cation and (py)(ph)CH(O)^- is the anion of (pyridin-2-yl)methanol. Based on solubility and crystallisation time differences between the two components of the mixture, complex 4 was isolated in pure form, i.e. free from 3. The formations of the counterion L⁺ and the coordinated (py)(ph)CH(O)^- anion represent clearly InBr₃-promoted/assisted transformations. Reaction mechanisms have been proposed for the formation of 2, 3 and 4. Complex 4 could also be isolated by the reaction of InBr₃ and pre-formed (py)(ph)CH(OH) in EtOH. The solid-state structures of 1, 3 and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, while the identity of the salt 2 was confirmed by microanalyses and a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including ESI-MS spectra. In the indium(III) complexes, the metal ions are 6-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry. The halogeno groups (Cl^-, Br^-) in the three complexes are terminal. The (py)(ph)CO molecule behaves as a N,O-bidentate (1.11) ligand in 1 and 3. A terminal EtOH ligand completes the coordination sphere of In^III in 1. The alkoxo oxygen atoms of the two 2.21 (py)(ph)CH(O)^- ligands doubly bridge the In^III centers in 4 creating a {InIII2(μ-OR)₂}⁴⁺ core; a nitrogen atom of one reduced organic ligand, two bromo ions and one terminal EtOH molecule complete the 6-coordination at each metal centre. Complexes 1, 3 and 4 were characterised by IR and Raman spectroscopies, and the data were discussed in terms of their known solid-state structures. Molar conductivity data and ¹H NMR spectra were used in an attempt to probe the behaviour of the complexes in DMSO. The to-date observed metal ion-assisted/promoted transformations of (py)(ph)CO are also discussed.

3D Electron Diffraction Structure Determination of Terrylene, a Promising Candidate for Intermolecular Singlet Fission

Herein we demonstrate the prowess of the 3D electron diffraction approach by unveiling the structure of terrylene, the third member in the series of peri‐condensed naphthalene analogues, which has eluded structure determination for 65 years. The structure was determined by direct methods using electron diffraction data and corroborated by dispersion‐inclusive density functional theory optimizations. Terrylene crystalizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/a, arranging in a sandwich‐herringbone packing motif, similar to analogous compounds. Having solved the crystal structure, we use many‐body perturbation theory to evaluate the excited‐state properties of terrylene in the solid‐state. We find that terrylene is a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission, comparable to tetracene and rubrene.

All-inorganic copper(i)-based ternary metal halides: promising materials toward optoelectronics

All-inorganic lead halides, including CsPbX₃ (X = Cl, Br, I), have become important candidate materials in the field of optoelectronics. However, the inherent toxicity of metal lead and poor material stability have hindered further applications of traditional metal halides, CsPbX₃. Therefore, copper(i)-based ternary metal halides are expected to become promising substitutes for traditional metal halides because of their nontoxicity, excellent optical properties and good stability under ambient conditions. This article reviews the recent development of all-inorganic low-dimensional copper(i)-based ternary metal halides by introducing their various synthesis methods, crystal structures, properties and their optoelectronic applications. In addition, the prospects for future challenges and the potential significance of copper(i)-based ternary metal halides in optoelectronic fields are presented.

Lead-Free Small-Bandgap Cs2CuSbCl6 Double Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead-free halide double perovskites (DPs) have attracted great attention due to their stability, nontoxicity and good photophysical property. In this work, we report a new, small-bandgap Cs₂CuSbCl₆ DP nanocrystals (NCs) with a bandgap of 1.66 eV, which is the smallest bandgap in reported lead-free three-dimensional DP NCs. Density functional theory calculations confirm that Cs₂CuSbCl₆ DP has an indirect bandgap of 1.70 eV, in good agreement with the experimental result. The photophysical property of Cs₂CuSbCl₆ NCs is studied by the combination of femtosecond transient absorption (TA) and nanosecond TA techniques. In addition, the Cs₂CuSbCl₆ NCs exhibit good stability exposed in the air. These results show that these NCs will have great potential to be used as a light-absorbing material for photovoltaic applications.

Nanocrystals of Lead Chalcohalides: A Series of Kinetically Trapped Metastable Nanostructures

We report the colloidal synthesis of a series of surfactant-stabilized lead chalcohalide nanocrystals. Our work is mainly focused on Pb4S3Br2, a chalcohalide phase unknown to date that does not belong to the ambient-pressure PbS-PbBr2 phase diagram. The Pb4S3Br2 nanocrystals herein feature a remarkably narrow size distribution (with a size dispersion as low as 5%), a good size tunability (from 7 to ∼30 nm), an indirect bandgap, photoconductivity (responsivity = 4 ± 1 mA/W), and stability for months in air. A crystal structure is proposed for this new material by combining the information from 3D electron diffraction and electron tomography of a single nanocrystal, X-ray powder diffraction, and density functional theory calculations. Such a structure is closely related to that of the recently discovered high-pressure chalcohalide Pb4S3I2 phase, and indeed we were able to extend our synthesis scheme to Pb4S3I2 colloidal nanocrystals, whose structure matches the one that has been published for the bulk. Finally, we could also prepare nanocrystals of Pb3S2Cl2, which proved to be a structural analogue of the recently reported bulk Pb3Se2Br2 phase. It is remarkable that one high-pressure structure (for Pb4S3I2) and two metastable structures that had not yet been reported (for Pb4S3Br2 and Pb3S2Cl2) can be prepared on the nanoscale by wet-chemical approaches. This highlights the important role of colloidal chemistry in the discovery of new materials and motivates further exploration into metal chalcohalide nanocrystals.
