Bismuth for Controlled Assembly/Disassembly of Transition-Metal Oxo Clusters, Defining Reaction Pathways in Inorganic Synthesis and Nature

Computational study of the interactions of tetravalent actinides (An = Th-Pu) with the α-Fe13 Keggin cluster

In recent years, evidence has emerged that actinide (An) uptake at the enhanced actinide removal plant (EARP) at the UK's Sellafield nuclear site occurs via An interactions with an α-Fe13 Keggin molecular cluster during ferrihydrite formation. We here study theoretically the substitution of aquo complexes of the actinides Th-Pu onto a Na-decorated α-Fe13 Keggin cluster using DFT at the PBE0 level. The optimised Pu-O and Pu-Fe distances are in good agreement with experiment and Na/An substitutions are significantly favourable energetically, becoming more so across the early 5f series, with the smallest and largest ΔrG° being for Th and Pu at -335.7 kJ mol-1 and -396.0 kJ mol-1 respectively. There is strong correlation between the substitution reaction energy and the ionic radii of the actinides (Δrε0R2 = 0.97 and ΔrG° R2 = 0.91), suggesting that the principal An-Keggin binding mode is ionic. Notwithstanding this result, Mulliken and natural population analyses reveal that covalency increases from Th-Pu in these systems, supported by analysis of the occupied Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals where enhanced An(5f)-O(2p) overlap is observed in the Np and Pu systems. By contrast, quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis shows that U-Keggin binding is the most covalent among the five actinides, in keeping with previous studies.

Unraveling Nanoscale Cobalt Oxide Catalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Maximum Performance, Minimum Effort

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key bottleneck step of artificial photosynthesis and an essential topic in renewable energy research. Therefore, stable, efficient, and economical water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) are in high demand and cobalt-based nanomaterials are promising targets. Herein, we tackle two key open questions after decades of research into cobalt-assisted visible-light-driven water oxidation: What makes simple cobalt-based precipitates so highly active-and to what extent do we need Co-WOC design? Hence, we started from Co(NO₃)₂ to generate a precursor precipitate, which transforms into a highly active WOC during the photocatalytic process with a [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺/S₂O₈^2-/borate buffer standard assay that outperforms state of the art cobalt catalysts. The structural transformations of these nanosized Co catalysts were monitored with a wide range of characterization techniques. The results reveal that the precipitated catalyst does not fully change into an amorphous CoO_x material but develops some crystalline features. The transition from the precipitate into a disordered Co₃O₄ material proceeds within ca. 1 min, followed by further transformation into highly active disordered CoOOH within the first 10 min. Furthermore, under noncatalytic conditions, the precursor directly transforms into CoOOH. Moreover, fast precipitation and isolation afford a highly active precatalyst with an exceptional O₂ yield of 91% for water oxidation with the visible-light-driven [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺/S₂O₈^2- assay, which outperforms a wide range of carefully designed Co-containing WOCs. We thus demonstrate that high-performance cobalt-based OER catalysts indeed emerge effortlessly from a self-optimization process favoring the formation of Co(III) centers in all-octahedral environments. This paves the way to new low-maintenance flow chemistry OER processes.

CeIV 70 Oxosulfate Rings, Frameworks, Supramolecular Assembly, and Redox Activity*

M^IV molecular oxo-clusters (M=Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu) are prolific in bottoms-up material design, catalysis, and elucidating reaction pathways in nature and in synthesis. Here we introduce Ce₇₀ , a wheel-shaped oxo-cluster, [Ce^IV ₇₀ (OH)₃₆ (O)₆₄ (SO₄ )₆₀ (H₂ O)₁₀ ]^4- . Ce₇₀ crystallizes into intricate high pore volume frameworks with divalent transition metals and Ce-monomer linkers. Eight crystal-structures feature four framework types in which the Ce₇₀ -rings are linked as propellers, in offset-stacks, in a tartan pattern, and as isolated rings. Small-angle X-ray scattering of Ce₇₀ dissolved in butylamine, with and without added cations (Ce^IV , alkaline earths, Mn^II ), shows the metals' differentiating roles in ring linking, leading to supramolecular assemblies. The large acidic pores and abundant terminal sulfates provide ion-exchange behavior, demonstrated with U^IV and Nd^III . Frameworks featuring Ce^III/IV -monomer linkers demonstrate both oxidation and reduction. This study opens the door to mixed-metal, highly porous framework catalysts, and new clusters for metal-organic framework design.

Water-Soluble Bismuth(III) Polynuclear Tyrosinehydroximate Metallamacrocyclic Complex: Structural Parallels to Lanthanide Metallacrowns

Recently there has been a great deal of interest and associated research into aspects of the coordination chemistry of lanthanides and bismuth-elements that show intriguing common features. This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a novel bismuth(III) polynuclear metallamacrocyclic complex derived from aminohydroxamic acid, in order to compare the coordination ability of Bi3+ with the similarly sized La3+ ions. A polynuclear tyrosinehydroximate Bi(OH)[15-MCCu(II)Tyrha-5](NO3)2 (1) was obtained according to the synthetic routes previously described for water-soluble Ln(III)-Cu(II) 15-MC-5 metallacrowns. Correlations between structural parameters of Bi(III) and Ln(III) complexes were analyzed. DFT calculations confirmed the similarity between molecular structures of the model bismuth(III) and lanthanum(III) tyrosinehydroximate 15-metallacrowns-5. Analysis of the electronic structures revealed, however, stronger donor-acceptor interactions between the central ion and the metallamacrocycle in the case of the lanthanum analogue. Thermochromic properties of 1 were studied.
