Abstract
A simple benzopyran-based fluorescence probe DCA-Apa detection of volatile amine has been synthesized. DCA-Apa can recognize volatile amines by dual channel mode (changing from blue to light yellow in sunlight, and from weak pink to orange under 365 nm) in pure water system. DCA-Apa has the advantages of ultra-fast response (∼6 s), NIR emission (655 nm), and a good fluorescence response for many amines. The sensing label or gel loaded with DCA-Apa was prepared by the dipping or mixing method using filter paper or gelatin as solid carriers, which can identify volatile amine vapor and monitor the freshness of salmon by colorimetric and fluorescent dual channels. When the color of the label changes to light yellow-green or the fluorescence of the label becomes orange fluorescence (365 nm UV lamp), it indicates that the fish has rotted. The two-channel method makes up for the deficiency of the single colorimetric method, and establishes a theoretical foundation for more precise assessment of fish freshness.

Abstract
Herein, for the first time, we have successfully constructed a novel near-infrared (NIR) emission fluorescent probe Dpyt for ultrafast detecting (within 5 s) bisulfate and organic amines based on a 1,2-dihydrocyclopenta[b]chromene-barbiturate conjugation system. Upon addition of bisulfate or organic amines, Dpyt displayed a distinct color change from blue to colorless or from purple to blue, respectively, suggesting that the Dpyt can be used to detect two analytes by the naked eye. Based on quantum chemistry calculations, the fluorescence quenching of Dpyt after the addition of HSO3- is caused by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of the adduct Dpyt-HSO3-. The fluorescence enhancement of Dpyt caused by most organic amines is due to the enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process of deprotonated Dpyt. Notably, Dpyt can be applied for detecting HSO3- in actual food samples such as red wine and sugar, as well as for imaging of HSO3- and representative propylamine in living cells. And more importantly, indicator labels constructed by filter paper loaded with Dpyt can visually monitor the freshness of salmon in real-time by daylight and fluorescence dual-mode. The comparison with national standard method of China manifests that indicator labels are a valid tool to assess the freshness of seafood.

Abstract
In this work, we developed an aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) active and NIR emissive pyrrolopyrrole aza-BODIPY (PPAB) polymer (P1) for H2S detection for the first time. P1 showed obvious colorimetric change from green to yellow-green and ratiometric fluorescence "turn on" phenomenon with 167 nm blue-shift (from dark red to bright green). The sensing mechanism revealed a novel chromophore reaction between imine in PPAB core and H2S was involved, leading to less conjugated product. It exhibited distinct advantages of good selectivity, high sensitivity, and low detection limit of 0.66 μM. The potential applicability of P1 for H2S detection in the real samples (tap water, lake water and milk) was demonstrated. In addition, the solid sensor prepared by loading P1 on the PMMA film was successfully realized the visual detection of gaseous H2S gas produced from egg spoilage. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach based on novel sensing mechanism for monitoring H2S in complicated biological systems and practical food samples.

Abstract
Cyanide is a highly toxic substance, and the detection of cyanide in the environment and food samples is critical to public health care. Herein, we rationally designed a mitochondria-targeted near-infrared fluorescent probe BTC for ratiometric monitoring of CN- in water, food, living cells, and zebrafish. BTC exhibits a remarkable colorimetric ratiometric fluorescence response to CN- with high selectivity, low detection limit (54.3 nM), and large Stokes shift. The cyanide sensing mechanism was demonstrated by NMR and ESI-MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT). More importantly, BTC was used for efficient naked-eye colorimetric detection of CN- in sprouting potatoes, almonds, and ginkgo fruit samples. Further, the BTC is capable of situ tracking and imaging cyanide in mitochondria of SMMC-7721 cells and in zebrafish via dual emission channels, and was prepared into a kit for convenient and visual on-site sensing of cyanide in food samples.

Abstract
It is crucial to on-site monitor H2S for addressing the concerns associated with food safety. We rationally prepared an AIE-active fluorescent probe (CLBZ) with the aggregated state conversion for sensing H2S in a ratiometric response manner. CLBZ displayed ratiometric response, fast response time (5 s), well-resolved emission peak shift (147 nm) and high selectivity towards H2S, and it can be used as a reversible and reusable probe. The probe-based test strip was also developed to conveniently detect H2S generated during food spoilage in the absence of laboratory instruments. It achieved the consistent results and sensitivity with that determined by the colony forming unit (CFU) assay. These results paved a successful way to develop an effective analytical method for food quality and safety.

Abstract
Herein, a novel hemicyanine derivative (E)-3-(1,1-dimethyl-2-(4-(methylthio)styryl)-1H-benzo[e]indol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonate (BIS) has been reasonably designed. Compound BIS is long-wavelength emissive and water-soluble with a large Stokes shift. Intriguingly, probe BIS provides a dual-mode fluorescence response pattern for the sensing of bisulfite (HSO3-) and hypochlorous acid (HClO) with great limit of detections (3.6 and 57.4 nM). First, the 1,4-Michael addition of HSO3- on the conjugated double bond triggers a ratiometric response (I465/I575). Second, the rapid oxidation of HClO on the thioether moiety provides a turn-on response (I575). Evaluation of HSO3- and HClO levels in dried fruit, beverage, and water samples has been carried out with satisfactory results. Moreover, motivated by an impressive chromatic variation (red to blue), smartphone-assisted signal readout system and thin-film sensing platform are facilely constructed for real-time and on-site measurement of HSO3- levels. Furthermore, probe BIS is used for the in vivo imaging of HSO3- in edible fish models.

Abstract
Bisulfite (HSO3-) has been widely used as an important food additive in daily life. Furthermore, a normal amount of HSO3- plays a significant role in biological systems. However, excessive intake of HSO3- will lead to a variety of diseases. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop an efficient fluorescent probe that can be used for detection of HSO3- in biological systems and food samples. In this work, a near-infrared (NIR) emitted fluorescent probe (SZY) based on hemicyanine dye was successfully synthesized and applied to detect HSO3- in several food samples and live animals. The proposed nucleophilic addition sensing mechanism of SZY towards HSO3- has been confirmed by 1H NMR titration, high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical computation. The HSO3--induced nucleophilic reaction with α,β-unsaturated C=C binding of SZY results in the dramatic decline of the UV-vis absorption and remarkable quenching of the fluorescence emission. SZY features the advantages of near infrared emission (centered at 720 nm), high water solubility (in 98% aqueous solution), fast response time (50 s), large Stokes shift (244 nm) and low cytotoxicity. The probe SZY was successfully applied to image of HSO3- in live nude mouse and adult zebrafish. Semi-quantitatively analyzing the HSO3- level by "naked eye" in several food samples including canned fruit, white wine, white sugar and jasmine tea drinks has been realized by the colorimetric method.

Abstract
A quinoline-naphthalene duo-based Schiff base probe (R) was synthesized and characterized by the usual spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic techniques. Probe R detects Al3+ and HSO3- ions via the fluorescent turn-on approach by dual pathways i.e., i) when probe R interacts with Al3+, the restriction of CN single bond rotation, blocking of both photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and CN isomerization were observed, and ii) when the sensor R interacts with HSO3-, imine (CH = N) bond was cleaved via hydrolysis and produced the respective aldehyde and amine behaving as a chemodosimeter. The binding stoichiometric ratio of R + Al3+ (1:1) was confirmed by Job's plot, emission titration profile, NMR, and mass spectrometric analyses. This probe R is highly selective to both Al3+ -ions and HSO3- -ions, without any interference of other potentially competing cations and anions. Limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of R with Al3+ and HSO3- were downed to nanomolar concentrations, which is much lower than the recommended level of drinking water/food fixed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, probe R was utilized in the detection of Al3+ and HSO3- ions in highly contaminated real samples, bioimaging in E. coli cells, multiple-targeting molecular logic gate, and in bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding.

Abstract
Endogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) is mainly produced by the enzymatic reaction of sulfur-containing amino acids in mitochondria, which has unique biological activity in inflammatory reaction, regulating blood pressure and maintaining the homeostasis of biological sulfur. It is more and more common to detect monitor SO2 levels by fluorescence probe. In recent years, the indolium hemicyanine skeleton based on the D-π-A structure has been widely used in the development of fluorescent sensors for the detection of SO2. However, subtle changes in the chemical structure of indolium may cause significant differences in SO2 sensing behavior. In this article, we designed and synthesized two probes with different lipophilicities to further study the relationship between the structure and optical properties of hemicyanine dyes. On the basis of previous studies, the structure of indolium hemicyanine skeleton was optimized by introducing -OH group, so that MC-1 and MC-2 had the best response to SO32- in pure PBS system. In addition, the lipophilicity of MC-2 was better than that of MC-1, which enabled it to respond quickly to SO32- and better target mitochondria for SO2 detection. Most importantly, the low detection limits of MC-1 and MC-2 conducive to the detection of endogenous SO2. This work provided an idea for developing SO2 fluorescent sensors with excellent water solubility and low detection limit.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the main air pollutant in the environment, causing great harm to human health. Abnormal SO2 levels are usually associated with some respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders (even brain cancer). Therefore, monitoring SO2 levels is helpful to better understand its special physiological and pathological role. Although many fluorescent probes for SO2 have been reported, many of them were not ideal for in vivo imaging due to the short emission wavelength. In this work, a near-infrared fluorescent probe NIR-BN with emission wavelength of 680 nm was constructed by conjugating the benzopyrylium moiety and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde. NIR-BN had high selectivity and rapidity for SO2 detection. In addition, the detection limit of NIR-BN was relatively low, which can be used for the determination of sulfite in different sugar samples with high accuracy. Of course, due to the excellent spectral and structural properties of NIR-BN, we have applied NIR-BN to the detection of SO2 in biological systems.

Abstract
Hypochlorous acid (HClO) as well as its ionic form (ClO-), representative of reactive oxygen species (ROS), are essential players in all sorts of biological processes. The abnormal level of each can lead to the onset of various diseases. Besides, Sodium hypochlorite, a commonly-used bleaching agent in our daily lives, could also result in breathing and skin problems when overexposed. Therefore, developing a molecular chemosensor for sensing HClO is of biological and environmental importance. Though many such chemosensors have been reported, new HClO chemosensors with different sensing performances may still come in handy in certain situations. In this work, we have developed a new coumarin-based chemosensor, CM-hbt, for realizing both ratiometric and colorimetric imaging detection of HClO in live cells. Notably, we further explored its application in sensing HClO in plant mung beans as well as fabricated an easy-to-use paper strip apparatus for facilitating its quick detection, which is seldomly seen in other HClO chemosensors. All the analysis results confirmed the high sensitivity and selectivity of this novel chemosensor. DFT calculations were used to decipher the underlying sensing mechanism of CM-hbt. Overall, this work presents a novel chemosensor, CM-hbt, as a colorimetric and ratiometric chemosensor for realizing imaging detection of HClO in a variety of different model systems, which highlights its broad spectrum of application potentials.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a gaseous signaling molecule and widely used as a preservative for foods, but its excessive intake is closely related to a series of diseases. Therefore, the development of a potent fluorescence probe for the detection of SO2 in foods and biological systems is of great significance. Herein, we report for the first time a "dual-positive-ion" platform-based fluorescence probe CMQ, designed by a doubly activated but irreversible strategy, which results in its ultrafast response to SO2 within 5 s in pure aqueous solution together with a low detection limit as 15.6 nM. In addition, the probe was successfully applied for imaging of SO2 in mitochondria of living cells and zebrafish and prepared as a reagent kit for convenient and instantaneous quantification of HSO3- in real food samples.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In) are three essential elements in group IIIA of the periodic table, which all share similar chemical properties and are also vital in many aspects of bio- and environmental systems. Proper control of their levels is thus necessary as overexposure to them has been linked to onsets of many diseases. Fluorescence based molecular probes have always been the driving horse for detecting vital ions including group IIIA ions. However, only a few such probes have been reported so far and all of them are faced with one or more shortcomings such as not very high sensitivity, incapability to detect multiple ions simultaneously, and poor cell penetration abilities due to emitted fluorescence at shorter wavelengths. To meet those challenges, we herein presented the successful development and application of a novel group IIIA ions fluorescent probe, NBD-hnap, in live RAW264.7 cell and zebrafish models, especially the imaging of ocular tumor cell OCM-1 (human choroid melanoma cells). NBD-hnap was synthesized by a simple conjugation of NBD and hnap molecules under suitable conditions. Subsequent experimental analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed that NBD-hnap forms a 1:1 chelate with each of three selected group IIIA ions. Further evaluation proved that NBD-hnap can realize highly sensitive [LODs of 113, 82 and 150 nM for Al(III), Ga(III), and In(III) respectively in aqueous solutions] and highly selective (over a dozen of interfering cations) through an ESIPT-based fluorescent sensing mechanism with strong far-red emission around 640 nm. Those value merits make NBD-hnap superior to other group IIIA ion probes reported before and NBD-hnap is thus expected to find wider and greater applications in the near future.
