Abstract
Organic acids are important compounds with numerous applications in different industries. This work presents a comprehensive review of the biological synthesis of oxalic acid, an important organic acid with many industrial applications. Due to its important applications in pharmaceuticals, textiles, metal recovery, and chemical and metallurgical industries, the global demand for oxalic acid has increased. As a result, there is an increasing need to develop more environmentally friendly and economically attractive alternatives to chemical synthesis methods, which has led to an increased focus on microbial fermentation processes. This review discusses the specific strategies for microbial production of oxalic acid, focusing on the benefits of using bio-derived substrates to improve the economics of the process and promote a circular economy in comparison with chemical synthesis. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the various fermentation methods, fermenting microorganisms, and the biochemistry of oxalic acid production. It also highlights key sustainability challenges and considerations related to oxalic acid biosynthesis, providing important direction for further research. By providing and critically analyzing the most recent information in the literature, this review serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding the biosynthesis of oxalic acid, addressing critical research gaps, and future advances in the field.

Abstract
Salinity stress is a major factor affecting the nutritional and metabolic profiles of crops, thus hindering optimal yield and productivity. Recent advances in nanotechnology propose an avenue for the use of nano-fertilizers as a potential solution for better nutrient management and stress mitigation. This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of conventional and nano-fertilizers (nano-Zn/nano-Si) on maize and subcellular level changes in its ionomic and metabolic profiles under salt stress conditions. Zinc and silicon were applied both in conventional and nano-fertilizer-using farms under stress (100 mM NaCl) and normal conditions. Different ions, sugars, and organic acids (OAs) were determined using ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The results revealed significant improvements in different ions, sugars, OAs, and other metabolic profiles of maize. Nanoparticles boosted sugar metabolism, as evidenced by increased glucose, fructose, and sucrose concentrations, and improved nutrient uptake, indicated by higher nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate levels. Particularly, nano-fertilizers effectively limited Na accumulation under saline conditions and enhanced maize's salt stress tolerance. Furthermore, nano-treatments optimized the potassium-to-sodium ratio, a critical factor in maintaining ionic homeostasis under stress conditions. With the growing threat of salinity stress on global food security, these findings highlight the urgent need for further development and implementation of effective solutions like the application of nano-fertilizers in mitigating the negative impact of salinity on plant growth and productivity. However, this controlled environment limits the direct applicability to field conditions and needs future research, particularly long-term field trials, to confirm such results of nano-fertilizers against salinity stress and their economic viability towards sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Soil calcium carbonate (CaCO3) impacts plant mineral nutrition far beyond Fe metabolism, imposing constraints for crop growth and quality in calcareous agrosystems. Our knowledge on plant strategies to tolerate CaCO3 effects mainly refers to Fe acquisition. This review provides an update on plant cellular and molecular mechanisms recently described to counteract the negative effects of CaCO3 in soils, as well as recent efforts to identify genetic bases involved in CaCO3 tolerance from natural populations, that could be exploited to breed CaCO3-tolerant crops. Finally, we review the impact of environmental factors (soil water content, air CO2, and temperature) affecting soil CaCO3 equilibrium and plant tolerance to calcareous soils, and we propose strategies for improvement in the context of climate change.

Abstract
A complicated storage reaction mechanism will occur during the storage period in fresh-cut apples, and oxalic acid could physiologically modify the flesh tissue to achieve preservation purposes. This study revealed the storage quality regulation mechanism treated with oxalic acid (3 mmol⋅L-1) in fresh-cut apples through nontarget metabolomics and physiological analyses. It was discovered that oxalic acid could enhance the antioxidant enzymes activities, i.e. superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, etc., contents of soluble solids, total phenolic and reducing sugar, postpone the enhancement of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion, and defer the decrease of titratable acid, hardness and total antioxidant capacity. 427 differentially expressed metabolites were identified by nontarget metabolomics. Among them, mainly involved in glycerol ester metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, etc. were up-regulated treated with oxalic acid. In summary, oxalic acid could enhance the antioxidant properties and regulate metabolite synthesis, leading to delayed quality deterioration of fresh-cut apples.

Abstract
The study investigated calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal composition, accumulation, synthesis, and degradation in five rhubarb species from the North-Western Indian Himalayas. Techniques like optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and real-time (qRT-PCR) expression analysis of strategic genes were used to understand the processes of oxalate synthesis and precipitation. Results showed crystals tend to accumulate around vascular bundles in all species, irrespective of size, indicating a consistent pattern. Crystal synthesis and accumulation were stress-driven, linked to substrate composition, and in planta soluble oxalate and calcium levels, paralleling oxalate precursors. Based on their availability, CaOx crystals precipitated heavy metals mostly associated with its weddellite form. Crystal content correlated positively with mRNA levels of calcium/oxalate/ascorbate-related and stress-responsive genes, and negatively with oxalate oxidation/decarboxylation genes. CaOx crystals were suggested as potential biominerals for addressing heavy metal stress in agriculture.

Abstract
To promote the growth and yield of crops, it is necessary to develop an effective silicon fertilizer. Herein, a new type of 2 nm silicon quantum dot (SiQD) was developed, and the phenotypic, biochemical, and metabolic responses of rice seedlings treated with SiQDs were investigated. The results indicated that the foliar application of SiQDs could significantly improve the growth of rice seedlings by increasing the uptake of nutrient elements and activating the antioxidative defense system. Furthermore, metabolomics revealed that the supply of SiQDs could significantly up-regulate several antioxidative metabolites (oxalic acid, maleic acid, glycine, lysine, and proline) by reprogramming the nitrogen- and carbon-related biological pathways. The findings provide a new strategy for developing an effective and promising quantum fertilizer in agriculture.

Abstract
The Acyl-activating enzyme (AAE) 3 gene encodes an oxalyl-CoA synthetase that catalyzes the conversion of oxalate to oxalyl-CoA as the first step in the CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism. Although the role of this enzyme in oxalate catabolism has been established, its biological roles in plant growth and development are less understood. As a step toward gaining a better understanding of these biological roles, we report here a characterization of the Arabidopsis thaliana aae3 (Ataae3) seed mucilage phenotype. Ruthidium red (RR) staining of Ataae3 and wild type (WT) seeds suggested that the observed reduction in Ataae3 germination may be attributable, at least in part, to a decrease in seed mucilage accumulation. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the expression of selected mucilage regulatory transcription factors, as well as of biosynthetic and extrusion genes, was significantly down-regulated in the Ataae3 seeds. Mucilage accumulation in seeds from an engineered oxalate-accumulating Arabidopsis and Atoxc mutant, blocked in the second step of the CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism, were found to be similar to WT. These findings suggest that elevated tissue oxalate concentrations and loss of the oxalate catabolism pathway downstream of AAE3 were not responsible for the reduced Ataae3 seed germination and mucilage phenotypes. Overall, our findings unveil the presence of regulatory interplay between AAE3 and transcriptional control of mucilage gene expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND About 35-45% of the global population is affected by iodine deficiency. Iodine intake can be increased through the consumption of biofortified vegetables. Given the increasing interest in wild edible species of new leafy vegetables due to their high nutritional content, this study aimed to evaluate the suitability of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris var. cicla) and its wild ancestor sea beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) to be fortified with iodine. Plants were cultivated hydroponically in a nutrient solution enriched with four different concentrations of iodine (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mg L-1 ), and the production and quality of baby leaves were determined. RESULTS Sea beet accumulated more iodine than Swiss chard. In both subspecies, increasing the iodine concentration in the nutrient solution improved leaf quality as a result of greater antioxidant capacity - the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) index increased by 17% and 28%, at 0.5 and 1.5 mg L-1 iodine, respectively - the content of flavonoids (+31 and + 26%, at 1 and 1.5 mg L-1 of iodine, respectively), and the lower content of nitrate (-38% at 1.5 mg L-1 of iodine) and oxalate (-36% at 0.5 mg L-1 of iodine). In sea beet, however, iodine levels in the nutrient solution higher than 0.5 mg L-1 reduced crop yield significantly. CONCLUSIONS Both subspecies were found to be suitable for producing iodine-enriched baby leaves. The optimal iodine levels in the nutrient solution were 1.0 in Swiss chard and 0.5 mg L-1 in sea beet, as crop yield was not affected at these concentrations and leaves contained enough iodine to satisfy an adequate daily intake with a serving of 100 g. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Oxalate is an antinutrient present in a wide range of foods, with plant products, especially green leafy vegetables, being the main sources of dietary oxalates. This compound has been largely associated with hyperoxaluria, kidney stone formation, and, in more severe cases, systematic oxalosis. Due to its impact on human health, it is extremely important to control the amount of oxalate present in foods, particularly for patients with kidney stone issues. In this review, a summary and discussion of the current knowledge on oxalate analysis, its extraction conditions, specific features of analytical methods, reported occurrence in foods, and its health implications are presented. In addition, a brief conclusion and further perspectives on whether high-oxalate foods are truly problematic and can be seen as health threats are shown.

Abstract
Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals are biominerals present in a wide variety of plants. Formation of these crystals is a biomineralization process occurring in vacuoles within specialized cells called crystal idioblasts. This process is dependent on two key components: deprotonated oxalic acid, and calcium ions (Ca2+), and can result in multiple crystal morphologies. Raphides are needle-like CaOx crystals found in various plant organs and tissues. Though their function is highly debated, they can potentially store calcium, sequester heavy metals, protect against herbivory and possibly programmed cell death. The last review of the taxonomic and anatomical distribution of raphides across the plant kingdom dates back to 1980, in a review by Franceschi and Horner, prompting an updated systematic review of raphides in plants. We conduct a broad literature search to record plant taxa and tissue locations containing raphides. We provide an overview of raphide-forming plant taxa, discussing phylogenetic distribution of raphides at the order level, and report on the specific locations of raphides within plants. Our review reveals raphide occurrence has been studied in 33 orders, 76 families and 1305 species, with raphides presence confirmed in 24 orders, 46 families and 797 species. These taxa represented less than 1 % of known species per family. Leaves are the most prominent raphide-containing primary location in all three major angiosperm clades investigated: Eudicots, Magnoliids, and Monocots. Roots are least reported to contain raphides. The collation of such information lays the groundwork to unveil the genetic origin and evolution of raphides in plants, and highlights targets for future studies of the presence and role of plant raphides.

Abstract
High oxalate level in blood and urine may cause oxalate-related disorders, particularly kidney stone disease. To unravel disease mechanisms, investigations of oxalate level and its binding proteins are required. However, the information on oxalate-binding proteins is limited due to a lack of appropriate tool for their investigations. Therefore, we have developed a freely accessible web-based tool, namely OxaBIND (https://www.stonemod.org/oxabind.php), to identify oxalate-binding site(s) in any proteins of interest. The prediction model was generated by recruiting all of the known oxalate-binding proteins with solid experimental evidence (from PubMed and RCSB Protein Data Bank). The potential oxalate-binding domains/motifs were predicted from these oxalate-binding proteins using PRATT tool and used to discriminate these known oxalate-binding proteins from the known non-oxalate-binding proteins. The best one, which provided highest fitness score, sensitivity and specificity, was then implemented to create the OxaBIND tool. After inputting protein identifier or sequence (which can be single or multiple), details of all the identified oxalate-binding site(s), if any, are presented in both textual and graphical formats. OxaBIND also provides theoretical three-dimensional (3D) structure of the protein with oxalate-binding site(s) being highlighted. This tool will be beneficial for future research on the oxalate-binding proteins, which play important roles in the oxalate-related disorders.
