Abstract
Visible-light-mediated metal-free irreversible phototransformations of ortho-bihetaryl appended chalcones are reported. Isosteric replacement of one of the aryl residues with a chalcone fragment in diarylethene (terarylene) molecules leads to a significant expansion of the synthetic capabilities of these compounds, thereby opening up access to a wide range of new functional materials. It was found for the first time that protonation of the carbonyl group in the chalcone moiety of ortho-bihetarylchalcones exclusively promotes 6π-photocyclization leading to the formation of oxathia[5]helicenes, whereas 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted cyclobutanes are preferably formed upon photolysis in toluene in the presence of triethylamine. The formation of the helicene framework is due to visible light-induced 6π-electrocyclization of the hexatriene system of bihetaryl chalcones, and [2 + 2]-photocycloaddition is facilitated by the aggregation of chalcone molecules, which is a consequence of the formation of a head-to-head excimer due to π-π-stacking interactions of naphthofuran polyaromatic systems. These results will provide valuable information on the photocyclization of new diarylethene analogues, which can be used to develop new efficient protocols for the synthesis of fused heteroaromatic frameworks and promising materials with wide applications in material science, molecular electronics and medicine.

Abstract
In the present communication, a comprehensive study of the photochemical behavior of terarylenes with a 2-aminothiazole bridge unit and an allomaltol substituent was performed. It was shown that for the considered substrates, two types of photoprocesses can be realized. By controlling the structure of the starting material, the photoprocess can be directed toward the 6π-electrocyclization of the 1,3,5-hexatriene system or the ESIPT-induced contraction of the pyranone ring. Relying on data from DFT calculations and UV-vis spectroscopy, the key features of the observed phototransformations were discussed. The investigated thiazole-containing terarylenes were utilized as a scaffold for the construction of photoacid generators (PAGs). Based on the performed research, a synthetic methodology was developed leading to series of 23 novel polycyclic photoproducts and a set of thiazole-containing salts with a quinoxaline part.

Abstract
We present a six-step cascade that converts 1,3-distyrylbenzenes (bis-stilbenes) into nonsymmetric pyrenes in 40-60% yields. This sequence merges photochemical steps, E,Z-alkene isomerization, a 6π photochemical electrocyclization (Mallory photocyclization); the new bay region cyclization, with two radical iodine-mediated aromatization steps; and an optional aryl migration. This work illustrates how the inherent challenges of engineering excited state reactivity can be addressed by logical design. An unusual aspect of this cascade is that the same photochemical process (the Mallory reaction) is first promoted and then blocked in different stages within a photochemical cascade. The use of blocking groups is the key feature that makes simple bis-stilbenes suitable substrates for directed double cyclization. While the first stilbene subunit undergoes a classic Mallory photocyclization to form a phenanthrene intermediate, the next ring-forming step is diverted from the conventional Mallory path into a photocyclization of the remaining alkene at the phenanthrene's bay region. Although earlier literature suggested that this reaction is unfavorable, we achieved this diversion via incorporation of blocking groups to prevent the Mallory photocyclization. The two photocyclizations are assisted by the relief of the excited state antiaromaticity. Reaction selectivity is controlled by substituent effects and the interplay between photochemical and radical reactivity. Furthermore, the introduction of donor substituents at the pendant styrene group can further extend this photochemical cascade through a radical 1,2-aryl migration. Rich photophysical and supramolecular properties of the newly substituted pyrenes illustrate the role of systematic variations in the structure of this classic chromophore for excited state engineering.

Abstract
A photo-promoted oxidative cyclization, that is, the Mallory reaction of 2,3-diarylbenzophopholes has been developed. With the assistance of Bi(OTf)3 Lewis acid, the reaction proceeds smoothly under visible light irradiation even without any external oxidants. The newly developed dehydrogenative conditions are compatible with various functional groups and substitution patterns, which enables the streamlined synthesis of highly condensed dibenzophosphole derivatives of potent interest in material chemistry. Moreover, experimental and computational studies unveil the detailed reaction mechanism. The preliminary optoelectronic properties of some newly synthesized compounds are also demonstrated.

Abstract
The synthesis of 5-aryl- or 5,6-diaryl-11H-benzo[a]carbazoles has been achieved from 3-styryl indoles through catalyst-free photoinitiated dehydrogenative cyclization transformation, providing a range of structurally diverse products in excellent yields under mild conditions. The protocol is also applicable to furan and thiophene samples. This Mallory-type reaction takes place in an argon atmosphere without external oxidants. Finally, detailed mechanistic studies were performed, and kinetic isotope effect experiments indicate that dehydrogenative annulation reaction involves photoinduced 6π-electrocyclic ring-closing and hydrogen evolution cascade processes.

Abstract
Nonsymmetric diarylethenes with an additional "stiff" cyclohexenol ring undergo various types of tandem transformations launched by light-induced 6π-photocyclization. Among these, there are two novel reactions (formal [1,3]-H migration and complete aromatization to an anthracene derivative) as well as photorearrangement and formal methane elimination. This diverse reactivity demonstrates the great potential of semi-stiff-diarylethenes in synthetic photochemistry.

Abstract
The Mallory reaction, which involves the photocyclization of stilbenes/diarylethenes and their analogues into polycyclic aromatics, is of significant synthetic importance. However, its application to tertiary benzanilides has not been explored to date. Besides, most of the reported Mallory reactions require ultraviolet irradiation. In this study, we show the first Mallory reaction of tertiary benzanilides promoted by visible light via iminium intermediates formed in situ from tertiary benzanilide, Tf2O (triflic anhydride) and pyridine. UV/vis absorption spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the formation of the iminium intermediate decreased the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, thereby enhancing visible light absorption. This study provides a rapid and practical approach for the preparation of the phenanthridinone skeleton and provides a new idea for the design of new visible light photoswitches.

Abstract
The photochemical cyclodehydrochlorination (CDHC) reaction has recently been used to prepare a wide variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). However, the parameters affecting the efficiency of this reaction have been scarcely studied. In this work, we investigated how the reaction conditions influence the outcome of the reaction. The effect of functional groups on the different phenyl rings of the o-terphenyl scaffold was also studied. The reaction kinetics follow the same trend as Hammett's constant when electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups are present on the ring bearing the chlorine. The CDHC reaction can be successfully performed using less energetic 365 nm light in the presence of a triplet sensitizer. Computational results provide insight on the reaction mechanism, notably by identifying its three intermediate structures as well as its limiting step.

Abstract
The photocatalyzed radical-triggered thio/selenosulfonylation-bicyclization of indole-tethered 1,6-enynes has been established for the first time, enabling the synthesis of various previously unreported thio/selenosulfonylated benzo[c]pyrrolo[1,2,3-lm]carbazoles with moderate to good yields under mild conditions. The reaction pathway was proposed, consisting of energy transfer, homolytic cleavage, radical addition, 5-exo-dig, radical coupling, and a Mallory reaction cascade. This approach exhibits a wide substrate compatibility and excellent tolerability toward various functional groups and is characterized by its remarkable efficiency in both bond formation and annulation.

Abstract
Irreversible two-photon photorearrangement of 1,2-diarylethenes is a unique process providing access to complex 2a1 ,5a-dihydro-5,6-dithiaacenaphthylene (DDA) heterocyclic core. This reaction was serendipitously discovered during studies on photoswitchable diarylethenes and was initially considered as a highly undesired process. However, in recent years, it has been recognized as an efficient photochemical reaction, interesting by itself and as a promising synthetic method for the synthesis of challenging molecules. Herein, we discuss the state-of-the-art in studies on this notable process.

Abstract
A concise strategy to prepare polycyclic heteroaromatics involving a deaminative contraction cascade is detailed. The efficient deaminative ring contraction involves the in situ methylation of a biaryl-linked dihydroazepine to form a cyclic ammonium cation that undergoes a base-induced [1,2]-Stevens rearrangement/dehydroamination sequence. The presence of pseudosymmetry guides the retrosynthetic analysis of pyridyl-containing polycyclic heteroaromatics, enabling their construction by the reductive cyclization and deaminative contraction of tertiary amine precursors.

Abstract
There is incessant interest in the transfer of common chemical processes from organic solvents to water, which is vital for the development of bioinspired and green chemical technologies. Diarylethenes feature a rich photochemistry, including both irreversible and reversible reactions that are in demand in organic synthesis, materials chemistry, and photopharmacology. Herein, we introduce the first versatile class of diarylethenes, namely, potassium 2,3-diarylmaleates (DAMs), that show excellent solubility in water. DAMs obtained from highly available precursors feature a full spectrum of photoactivity in water and undergo irreversible reactions (oxidative cyclization or rearrangement) or reversible photocyclization (switching), depending on their structure. This finding paves a way towards wider application of diarylethenes in photopharmacology and bioinspired technologies that require aqueous media for photochemical reactions.

Abstract
The synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds generally requires stoichiometric oxidants or homogeneous metal catalysts, however, the risk of contamination of inorganic residues can affect their properties. Here we present a microwave (MW)-assisted platinum on beaded activated carbon (Pt/CB)-catalyzed C-C bond formation of diarylacetylenes and aromatic hydrocarbons under continuous-flow conditions. Various fused aromatic compounds were continuously synthesized via dehydrogenative C(sp2)-C(sp2) and C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond formation with yields of up to 87% without the use of oxidants and bases. An activated, local reaction site on Pt/CB in the flow reaction channel reaching temperatures of more than three hundred degrees Celsius was generated in the catalyst cartridge by selective microwave absorption in CB with an absorption efficiency of > 90%. Mechanistic experiments of the transformation reaction indicated that a constant hydrogen gas supply was essential for activating Pt. This is an ideal reaction with minimal input energy and no waste production.

Abstract
A skeletal photorearrangement involving UV-induced 6π-electrocyclization of diarylethenes with various ethene bridges has been studied. It has been found that deprotonation is the predominant step among the three possible alternative reaction pathways (radical abstraction, deprotonation, or sigmatropic shift) following 6π-electrocyclization, and incorporation of an electronegative carbonyl group into the geminal position to the phenyl residue results in a reduction in the reaction time and an increase in the yield of the desired product. The significant increase in the reaction time in less polar solvents (toluene, TCM) also indicates a large contribution of the deprotonation step to the skeletal photorearrangement of diarylethenes. Performing the reaction in toluene in the presence of tertiary amines leads to a reduction in the reaction time and an increase in the yield of the desired product. The best results were achieved when the reaction was carried out in toluene in the presence of DIPEA. The experimental results are in good agreement with the DFT calculations.

Abstract
Herein, we expose how the antagonistic relationship between solid-state luminescence and photocyclization of oligoaryl alkene chromophores is modulated by the conjugation length of their alkenyl backbones. Heptaaryl cycloheptatriene molecular rotors exhibit aggregation-induced emission characteristics. We show that their emission is turned off upon breaking the conjugation of the cycloheptatriene by epoxide formation. While this modification is deleterious to photoluminescence, it enables formation of extended polycyclic frameworks by Mallory reactions. We exploit this dichotomy (i) to manipulate emission properties in a controlled manner and (ii) as a synthetic tool to link together pairs of phenyl rings in a specific sequence. This method to alter the tendency of oligoaryl alkenes to undergo photocyclization can inform the design of solid-state emitters that avoid this quenching mechanism, while also allowing selective cyclization in syntheses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract
For the first time, the possibility of photocyclization of the 1,3,5-hexatriene system containing a fragment of allomaltol was demonstrated. A preparative method for the synthesis of previously unknown benzo[5,6]chromeno[8,7-d]oxazole-2,7(3H)-diones was developed based on the investigated photoreaction. A distinctive feature of this approach is the modification of the starting terarylenes aimed at blocking the competitive process leading to side reactions of the pyranone fragment. It was shown that the proposed photocyclization of substituted oxazol-2-ones can be used for the photogeneration of biologically active alcohols and various acids. The structure of one of the cyclization products was determined by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
A TfOH-promoted tandem synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted naphthalenes is developed via a directed-aldol reaction and a Friedel-Crafts reaction. Two new C-C bonds and one new benzene ring are created efficiently in one pot due to the discovery of a TfOH-promoted highly chemoselective directed-aldol reaction between two different ketones with α-hydrogens.

Abstract
The skeletal photorearrangement including 6π-electrocyclization induced by UV light of ortho-halogen-substituted diarylethenes has been studied. It has been found that the reaction pathways leading to bi- or tricyclic frameworks depend on the kind of halogen substituent and solvent. Photocyclization with halogen abstraction leads to bicyclic fused aromatics, while the tricyclic frameworks are formed due to the tandem 6π-electrocyclization/sigmatropic shift reaction. THF is preferred as the solvent in the former process and chloroform in the latter reaction. It was found for the first time that, owing to the ability of this series of diarylethenes to undergo skeletal photorearrangement with the release of the bromide cation, they can be used both as brominating agents and as Lewis acids for catalyzing electrophilic reactions.

Abstract
The effect of electron and proton acceptors on the photocyclization of diarylethenes has been studied. Without any additives, the deprotonation reaction is predominant, although other processes, including the sigmatropic shift, are not excluded. A deuterium exchange experiment has shown that a strong base (DABCO) facilitates the deprotonation reaction, thereby limiting the sigmatropic shift. In the presence of an oxidizing agent or additional sources of radicals (O2, I2, TEMPO), the processes of deprotonation and rearrangement (H-shift) are practically not observed, and the reaction proceeds along a radical pathway with the formation of phenanthrene or its heterocyclic analogue.

Abstract
Typically, the synthesis of phenanthrene-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons relies on the Mallory reaction. In this approach, stilbene (PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh)-based precursors undergo an oxidative photocyclization reaction to join the two adjacent aromatic rings into an extended aromatic structure. However, if one C[double bond, length as m-dash]C carbon atom is replaced by a nitrogen atom (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N), the synthesis becomes practically infeasible. Here, we show the very first examples of a successful Mallory reaction on stilbene-like imine precursors involving the molecularly curved corannulene nucleus. The isolated yields exceed 90% and the resulting single and double aza[4]helicenes exhibit adjustable high affinity for electrons.
