Abstract
The chemistry of fluorinated compounds has experienced extraordinary growth in recent decades due to the many and varied properties which many of the compounds that contain fluorinated groups possess. Among all of them, fluorinated chiral imines, in particular the Ellman's imines, are of great importance since they are some of the most interesting building blocks for the synthesis of a large number of enantioenriched carbocycles and heterocycles with extraordinary biological and synthetic properties. This personal account covers the most significant results obtained in our research group in the last two decades concerning asymmetric tandem reactions, paying special attention to the intramolecular aza-Michael reaction (IMAMR), diversity oriented synthesis (DOS), asymmetric tandem reactions involving a p-tolylsulfinyl group as chiral inducer and cycloaddition processes, in particular, the Pauson-Khand reaction, [2+2+2]-cycloadditions and metathesis reactions, starting mainly from enyne compounds and through the use of fluorinated chiral N-sulfinyl imines and their derivatives as starting materials.

Abstract
The synthesis of β-hydroxy-α,α-difluorosulfonamides was achieved by reacting difluoromethanesulfonamides with KHMDS in the presence of an aldehyde or ketone. The reaction exhibited a dramatic counterion effect with KHMDS or NaHMDS usually giving excellent yields in minutes, while lithium bases gave little or no product. Excellent yields and high diastereomeric ratios were achieved with Nα-benzyl-Nα-phenylfluorenyl (PhF)-protected chiral amino aldehydes derived from amino acids. Following deprotection, a β-hydroxy-α,α-sulfonamide reacted under peptide coupling and Mitsunobu conditions to furnish a peptidomimetic in an excellent overall yield.

Abstract
A variety of enantioenriched fluorinated 6H-cyclopenta[c]pyridin-6-one bicycles, a scaffold present in several classes of monoterpenic alkaloids with varied biological activity, were synthesized in just five steps from simple aldehyde starting materials. The synthesis presented wide functional group tolerance and moderate to high yields and diastereoselectivities and could be carried out on a gram scale. These products were suitable for further transformations, such as hydrogenation and deprotection of the tert-butylsulfonyl protecting group.

Abstract
An iridium-catalyzed diastereoselective amination of alcohols with chiral tert-butanesulfinamide was developed under basic conditions, affording the optically active secondary sulfinamides in high yields and diastereoselectivities. The removal of the sulfinyl group from sulfonamides allowed a facile access to a wide range of α-chiral primary amines. This synthetic strategy was further applied in the synthesis of the marketed pharmaceuticals (S)-rivastigmine and NPS R-568.

A highly efficient palladium-catalyzed cascade annulation of 2-vinylbenzaldehydes with indoles has been achieved to afford 6-(3-indolyl)benzo[b]carbazoles under mild conditions in good yield and with excellent regioselectivity.
