Abstract
N-participated lignin depolymerization is of great importance for the transformation of waste lignin into value-added chemicals. The vast majority of developed strategies employ organic amines as nitrogen source, and considerable methods rely on excessive use of strong base, which suffers severe environmental issues. Herein, benzonitrile derivatives are synthesized from oxidized lignin β-O-4 model compounds in the presence of solid nitrogen source (NH4)2CO3 under mild, base-free conditions over commercially available copper catalyst. Mechanism studies suggest the transformation undergoes a one-pot, highly coupled cascade reaction path involving oxidative C-C bond cleavage and in-situ formation of CN bond. Of which, Cu(OAc)2 catalyzes the transfer of hydrogen from Cβ (Cβ-H) to Cα, leading to the cleavage of Cα-Cβ bonds to offer benzaldehyde derivative, this intermediate then reacts in-situ with (NH4)2CO3 to afford the targeted aromatic nitrile product. Tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI), acting as a promoter, plays a key role in breaking the Cα-Cβ bonds to form the intermediate benzaldehyde derivative. With this protocol, the feasibility of the production of value-added syringonitrile from birchwood lignin has been demonstrated. This transformation provides a sustainable approach to benzonitrile chemicals from renewable source of lignin.

Abstract
Conventional oxidation processes for alkyl aromatics to ketones employ oxidants that tend to generate harmful byproducts and cause severe equipment corrosion, ultimately creating critical environmental problems. Thus, in this study, a practical, efficient, and green method was developed for the synthesis of aromatic ketones by applying a bis(2-butoxyethyl) ether/O2 system under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. This O2-mediated oxidation system can tolerate various functional groups and is suitable for large-scale synthesis. Diverse target ketones were prepared under clean conditions in moderate-to-high yields. The late-stage functionalization of drug derivatives with the corresponding ketones and one-pot sequential chemical conversions to ketone downstream products further broaden the application prospects of this approach.

Abstract
Benzimidazole-based compound 2-(p-tolyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (3) and its derivative probe A-B have been synthesized for the highly selective detection and quantification of Cys in human serum. The photophysical properties of A-B and compound 3 were evaluated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. A-B showed high selectivity and sensitivity for Cys among tested analytes, including amino acids, anions, and cations. A-B selectively reacts with Cys and results in compound 3 with fluorescence turn-on effect. A-B did not show any interference from the components in the serum matrix for Cys detection in the human serum sample. A-B detects Cys in serum samples with 2.3-5.4-fold better LOD than reported methods. The detection limit of 86 nM and 43 nM in HEPES buffer using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively, makes A-B an excellent chemosensor for Cys detection.

Abstract
An efficient metal-free synthesis strategy of benzoxazoles was developed via coupling catechols, ammonium acetate, and alkenes/alkynes/ketones. The developed methodology represents an operationally simple, one-pot and large-scale procedure for the preparation of benzoxazole derivatives using molecular iodine as the catalyst. A metal-free one-pot multi-component method for the efficient synthesis of 2-aryl benzoxazoles via coupling of catechols, ammonium acetate and alkenes/alkynes/ketones using an I2–DMSO catalyst system is illustrated.![]()

Abstract
For many years since its discovery, Selenium has played the role of a bad boy who became a hero in organic transformations. Selenium dioxide, for instance, is one of the most remembered reagents in allylic oxidations, having been applied in the synthesis of several naturally occurring products. The main goal of this review is to show the recent advances in the use of classical and new selenium reagents in organic synthesis. As demonstrated through around 60 references discussed in this study, selenium can go even forward as a versatile reagent. We bring a collection of selenium reagents and their transformations that are still hidden from most synthetic organic chemists.

Abstract
AbstractBenzimidazole is an important heterocycle that is widely researched and utilized by the pharmaceutical industry and is one of the five most commonly used five-membered aromatic heterocyclic compounds approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. In view of their wide-ranging bioactivities, systems containing benzimidazole as one of the moieties occupy a special place among other benzimidazole derivatives. Since 2010, many improved synthetic strategies have been developed for the construction of hetaryl- and arylbenzimidazole molecular scaffolds under environmentally benign conditions. This review emphasizes the recent trends and modifications frequently used in the synthesis of derivatives of benzimidazole such as the Phillips–Ladenburg and Weidenhagen reactions, as well as entirely new methods of synthesis, involving oxidative cyclization, cross-coupling, ring distortion strategy, and rearrangements carried out under environmentally benign conditions.1 Introduction2 From 1,2-Diaminobenzenes with Various One-Carbon Unit Suppliers2.1 Phillips–Ladenburg Reaction2.1.1 With (Het)arenecarboxylic Acids2.2.2 With (Het)arenecarboxylic Acid Derivatives2.2 Weidenhagen Reaction2.2.1 With (Het)arenecarbaldehydes or (Het)aryl Methyl Ketones2.2.2 With Primary Alcohols2.2.3 With Primary Alkylamines2.2.4 With 2-Methylazaarenes2.2.5 With Other One-Carbon Fragment Suppliers3 From 2-Haloacetanilides and Amines4 From Amidines5 From Tetrahydroquinazolines6 Mamedov Rearrangement7 Conclusions and Outlook

Abstract
A simple and practical domino protocol for the selective synthesis of 2-aroylbenzothiazoles and 2-aryl benzothiazoles catalyzed by I2 is developed under metal-free conditions. The reaction outcomes are exclusively controlled by the reaction oxidant/medium. With DMSO employed as both the solvent and the oxidant, an oxidation of aromatic methyl ketones takes precedence over the condensation with 2-aminobenzenethiols. On the other hand, when the reaction was carried out in PhNO2 or in 1,4-dioxane containing PhNO2, the condensation of aromatic methyl ketones with 2-aminobenzenethiols has priority to form imines which is followed by an oxidation of the methyl group from ketones to afford 2-arylbenzothiazoles as a sole product. The PhNO2/I2 co-catalytic system is proposed first time.
