Abstract
Lignans are widely present in traditional medicinal plants. Many natural arylnaphthalene lactone lignans (NALLs) isolated from the genera Justicia, Haplophyllum, and Phyllanthus possess interesting biological activities. Herein, we report a general strategy for the total synthesis of this kind of lignans. Features of this new approach are an aryl-alkyl Suzuki cross-coupling to introduce the dioxinone unit, a cation-induced cyclization to construct the aryl dihydronaphthalene, and base-mediated oxidative aromatization to furnish the arylnaphthalene core. By incorporating these key transformations, the total syntheses of justicidins B and E and taiwanin C covered type I and type II NALLs were accomplished.

Abstract
The widespread seagrass Zostera marina contains a new diarylheptanoid heterodimer, zosterabisphenone C (1), featuring an unprecedented rearrangement of one of its benzene rings to a cyclopentenecarbonyl unit. The planar structure and absolute configuration of zosterabisphenone C were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic (MS, ECD, and low-temperature NMR) and computational (DFT-NMR and DFT-ECD) evidence. Consistent with the previously isolated zosterabisphenones, compound 1 was selectively cytotoxic against HCT 116 adenocarcinoma colon cancer cells, reducing their viability by 73% at 10 μM (IC50 of 7.6 ± 1.1 μM). The biosynthetic origin of zosterabisphenone C (1) from an oxidative rearrangement of zosterabisphenone A (4) is proposed.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose the Ni-catalyzed ring-opening C-O functionalization of peri-xanthenoxanthenes using Grignard reagents that forms 8-monofunctionalized binaphthols. 1,2-Bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane was the best ligand for alkylations and ICy for arylation. After mechanistic investigations, we assumed that the reaction proceeds via C-O reduction and subsequent C-O functionalization. To verify the mechanism, the intermediate after reduction was isolated. Moreover, the asymmetric addition, using 8-octylbinaphthol after optical resolution, was studied.

Abstract
Cyclization and cycloisomerization of ortho-aryl(ethynyl)arenes provide an easy direct access to fused polycyclic aromatic carbo- and heterocycles. This methodology has demonstrated an impressive progress in the recent years. The goal of this review is to give a comprehensive outlook on the synthetic potential, scope, limitations, and mechanistic aspects of the cyclization reactions. The material is arranged according to the activation method that can be used to induce cyclization: pyrolysis, metal catalysis, electrophilic activation, radical induction, base catalysis. Particular attention is paid to the specificity of ortho-ethynylbiaryls with a heterocyclic central core.
The bibliography includes 257 references.

Abstract
Rodium chiral diene complex-catalyzed enantioselective cycloaddition of aryl α-diazoarylacetates and electron-enriched Danishefsky-type dienes afforded highly functionalized and optically enriched cyclopentenones in excellent yields (up to 97% yield) and with good to excellent enantioselectivities (60-92% ee). (-)-1,13-Herbertenediol was successfully synthesized in an overall 25% yield employing the optically enriched cyclopentenone with an all-carbon quaternary center as the key intermediate.
