Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric synthesis of highly functionalized cyclopropanes from 2-substituted allylic derivatives is reported. Using ethyl diazo acetate, the reaction, catalyzed by a chiral ruthenium complex (Ru(II)-Pheox), furnished the corresponding easily separable cis and trans cyclopropanes in moderate to high yields (32-97 %) and excellent ee (86-99 %). This approach significantly extends the portfolio of accessible enantioenriched cyclopropanes from an underexplored class of olefins. DFT calculations suggest that an outer-sphere mechanism is operative in this system.

Abstract
In this work, we studied the wavelength (520 or 350 nm) dependence of the photochemical decomposition of 1-phenyl-1-diazopropane (PDP) and 1-phenyl-1-propyl diazirine (PED) by means of high-level ab initio quantum chemical calculations (CASSCF and MS-CASPT2) to obtain qualitative and quantitative results. It is found that the photochemistry of PDP is governed by nonradiative deactivation processes that can involve one or two S1/S0 conical intersections (CI1 and CI2) depending on the wavelength of the radiation; CI2 is only accessible at the shortest wavelength. It is demonstrated that the main intermediate of the photochemistry of the titled compounds is 1-ethyl-1-phenyl carbene (EPC). Upon irradiation of PDP with the 520 nm light, the carbene is always generated in its ground state as closed-shell singlet carbene. In contrast, the 350 nm radiation can directly decompose PDP into S1 carbene (open shell) and N2 when the conical intersection CI2 is avoided. Once the carbene is formed in the S1 state, it can experience excited state intramolecular proton transfer along a seam of crossing (ESIPT-SC) of the S1 and S0 states to yield the alkene derivative; that is, the proton transfer reaction takes places on a degenerate potential energy surface where the two electronic states have equal energy. In addition, it is found that EPC absorbs at 350 nm (double excitations); therefore, there is another possible route that can induce as well a slightly different photochemistry in changing the wavelength of the radiation because the shortest wavelength (when it is intense enough) decreases the amount of available EPC or generates a highly vibrationally excited state of the carbene; that is, after 350 nm excitation, the carbene intermediate can deactivate via radiation emission or can decay through a cascade of conical intersections to its first excited state (S1), where ESIPT-SC is operative again.

Abstract
C-H functionalization has been emerging as a powerful method to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Many efforts have been devoted to transition-metal-catalyzed direct transformations of C-H bonds. Metal carbenes generated in situ from transition-metal compounds and diazo or its equivalents are usually applied as the transient reactive intermediates to furnish a catalytic cycle for new C-C and C-X bond formation. Using this strategy compounds from unactivated simple alkanes to complex molecules can be further functionalized or transformed to multi-functionalized compounds. In this area, transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds has been paid continuous attention. Diverse catalyst design strategies, synthetic methods, and potential applications have been developed. This critical review will summarize the advance in transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds dated up to July 2021, by the categories of C-H bonds from aliphatic C(sp3)-H, aryl (aromatic) C(sp2)-H, heteroaryl (heteroaromatic) C(sp2)-H bonds, alkenyl C(sp2)-H, and alkynyl C(sp)-H, as well as asymmetric carbene insertion to C-H bonds, and more coverage will be given to the recent work. Due to the rapid development of the C-H functionalization area, future directions in this topic are also discussed. This review will give the authors an overview of carbene insertion chemistry in C-H functionalization with focus on the catalytic systems and synthetic applications in C-C bond formation.

Abstract
Organometallic complexes [Ru-Colefin(sp2)-Ru(II)-Pheox 2a-2d] containing a Ru-Colefin(sp2) bond have been prepared from unsaturated chiral oxazoline derivatives and evaluated for asymmetric cyclopropanation reactions. The corresponding optically active cyclopropanes were obtained with high yields and high stereoselectivities (≥99/<1 trans/cis, 99% trans ee). The enantioselectivities were found to be affected by the geminal substituent on the Ru-C(sp2) bond. In particular, Ru(II)-Prox catalyst 2c, in which there was no geminal substituent on the metal, was shown to have the highest enantioselectivities.

Abstract
The Pd-catalyzed intramolecular carbene C–H insertion of α-diazo-α-(methoxycarbonyl)acetamides to prepare oxindoles as well as β-lactams was studied. In order to identify what factors influence the selectivity of the processes, we explored how the reactions are affected by the catalyst type, using two oxidation states of Pd and a variety of ligands. It was found that, in the synthesis of oxindoles, ((IMes)Pd(NQ))2 can be used as an alternative to Pd2(dba)3 to catalyze the carbene CArsp2–H insertion, although it was less versatile. On the other hand, it was demonstrated that the Csp3–H insertion leading to β-lactams can be effectively promoted by both Pd(0) and Pd(II) catalysts, the latter being most efficient. Insight into the reaction mechanisms involved in these transformations was provided by DFT calculations.
