The reaction of potassium xanthates with five-membered cyclic carbonates: selectivity of the underlying cascade reactions and mechanistic insights

In this paper we describe the reaction between various potassium xanthates (potassium O-methyl xanthate, potassium O-isobutyl xanthate, xanthate functionalized MPEGs, etc.) and common five-membered cyclic carbonates such as ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC). The reaction was carried out under catalyst-free conditions. Intensive evolution of both CO₂ and COS and the simultaneous formation of a rich precipitate were found to be the characteristic features of the studied reaction. It was determined that the precipitate consists of various alkoxides, including potassium ethane-1,2-bis(olate) (EC-based reaction) and potassium propane-1,2-bis(olate) (PC-based reaction) and alkoxide-terminated sulfides. It was also demonstrated that the resulting liquid phase (the mother liquor) contains polyalkylene sulfides whose number average molecular weight (M_n) was found to be in the range 400–550 Da and 300–400 Da for EC- and PC-based oligomers, respectively. Further studies revealed that the distribution between major products varies considerably with variation in the parameters of the reaction. Thus, by applying reduced pressure conditions and a temperature equal to 90 °C, up to 95% selectivity towards the formation of alkoxide-terminated sulfide (e.g., potassium 1,1′-thiobis(propan-2-olate)) was achieved. On the other hand, selectivity towards alkoxide formation equal to 98% was achieved for the reactions carried out in the presence of water. As a general trend, it was also established that a shift in balance between products towards the formation of sulfur-containing products (sulfides) occurs with an appropriate increase in the temperature of the reaction. Based on the obtained experimental data supplemented with quantum-chemical calculations (NBO analysis and scanning of the potential energy surface), the mechanisms of the cascade reactions underlying the formation of key intermediates and final products were also proposed.

The hydrolysis of epoxides catalyzed by inorganic ammonium salts in water: kinetic evidence for hydrogen bond catalysis

Naturally-occurring inorganic ammonium ions have been recently reported as efficient catalysts for some organic reactions in water, which contributes to the understanding of the chemistry in some natural environments (soils, seawater, atmospheric aerosols, …) and biological systems, and is also potentially interesting for green chemistry as many of their salts are cheap and non-toxic. In this work, the effect of NH₄⁺ ions on the hydrolysis of small epoxides in water was studied kinetically. The presence of NH₄⁺ increased the hydrolysis rate by a factor of 6 to 25 compared to pure water and these catalytic effects were shown not to result from other ions, counter-ions or from acid or base catalysis, general or specific. The small amounts of amino alcohols produced in the reactions were identified as the actual catalysts by obtaining a strong acceleration of the reactions when adding these compounds directly to the epoxides in water. Replacing the amino alcohols by other strong hydrogen-bond donors, such as trifluoroethanol (TFE) or hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) gave the same results, demonstrating that the kinetics of these reactions was driven by hydrogen-bond catalysis. Because of the presence of many hydrogen-bond donors in natural environments (for instance amines and hydroxy-containing compounds), hydrogen-bond catalysis is likely to contribute to many reaction rates in these environments.

Understanding the hydrogen bonds in ionic liquids and their roles in properties and reactions

Ionic liquids (ILs) have many potential applications in the chemical industry. In order to understand ILs, their molecular details have been extensively investigated. Intuitively, electrostatic forces are solely important in ILs. However, experiments and calculations have provided strong evidence for the existence of H-bonds in ILs and their roles in the properties and applications of ILs. As a structure-directing force, H-bonds are responsible for ionic pairing, stacking and self-assembling. Their geometric structure, interaction energy and electronic configuration in the ion-pairs of imidazolium-based ILs and protic ionic liquids (PILs) show a great number of differences compared to conventional H-bonds. In particular, their cooperation with electrostatic, dispersion and π interactions embodies the physical nature of H-bonds in ILs, which anomalously influences their properties, leading to a decrease in their melting points and viscosities and thus fluidizing them. Using ILs as catalysts and solvents, many reactions can be activated by the presence of H-bonds, which reduce the reaction barriers and stabilize the transition states. In the dissolution of lignocellulosic biomass by ILs, H-bonds exhibit a most important role in disrupting the H-bonding network of cellulose and controlling microscopic ordering into domains. In this article, a critical review is presented regarding the structural features of H-bonds in ILs and PILs, the correlation between H-bonds and the properties of ILs, and the roles of H-bonds in typical reactions.
