Broadband Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecules in Solutions with Two Intrapulse Difference-Frequency-Generated Mid-Infrared Frequency Combs

Asynchronous and Interferometric Nonlinear Spectroscopy (AI-NS): Expanding Temporal and Spectral Horizons

Since the advent of time-resolved spectroscopy based on precision frequency technology of laser sources, it has been considered an alternative way to study dynamic processes in photochemical systems. This Perspective introduces asynchronous and interferometric nonlinear spectroscopy (AI-NS), a spectroscopic technique that combines asynchronously generated laser pulses and interferometric detection, offering an unprecedented temporal dynamic range with high spectral resolution and rapid data acquisition capabilities. By eliminating the need for mechanical delay stages, AI-NS facilitates the rapid collection of time-resolved data on dynamics ranging from femtoseconds to nanoseconds while simultaneously distinguishing frequency-dependent responses. Here, we detail the technical methodology of AI-NS and explore its applications to the studies of various systems, including semiconductors and biological systems. Additionally, we highlight prospective advancements, such as integration with multidimensional spectroscopy techniques. AI-NS not only expands the scope of spectroscopic analysis but also opens new avenues for the exploration of diverse materials and molecular systems.

Combined optical and electrical control of a low-power consuming (∼fJ) two-terminal organic artificial synapse for associative learning and neuromorphic applications

Optoelectronic synaptic devices outperform electrical synapses in speed, energy efficiency, and integration density. Recent progress in visual sensing and optogenetics has led to the integration of light-sensitive materials in these devices, promising unmatched speed, connectivity, and bandwidth. Here, we present a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) based optoelectronic synaptic device boasting femto Joule power consumption stable at room temperature. The optoelectronic synapse can be operated with energy consumption as low as 430.4 fJ which is very attractive from the point of view of low-power neuromorphic devices. By modulating light pulses, the neuromorphic behavior can be emulated including excitatory post-synaptic current (EPSC), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), transitioning from short-term plasticity (STP) to long-term plasticity (LTP), spike-rate dependent plasticity (SRDP) and spike-number dependent plasticity (SNDP), etc. Optical potentiation and electrical depression are observed with combined optical and electrical stimulation, proving the multi-functionality of the synapse. Furthermore, the device demonstrates classical associative learning behaviors like Pavlovian conditioning using optical and electrical stimuli. We have established the pain conditioning processes such as hyperalgesic response and pain extinction effects with varying optical pulse amplitudes. These results render the CuPc-based devices as multifunctional and highly versatile artificial synaptic devices for future computing applications, offering unprecedented efficiency and functionality in neuromorphic systems.

Frequency axis for swept dual-comb spectroscopy with quantum cascade lasers

In dual-comb spectroscopy, there is a one-to-one map between the frequencies of the measured beat notes and the frequencies of the optical comb lines. Its determination usually involves the use of one or more reference lasers with known frequencies. Quantum cascade laser frequency combs, however, are often operated in a free-running mode, and without a reference, the determination of the RF-to-optical frequency map is not trivial. Here, we propose a method by which the comb shift is measured with an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and the spectral point spacing is determined through the intermode beat measured on the laser electrodes. The frequency axis is accurate within ∼ 0.001 cm^-1.
