Screening Ionic Liquids Based on Ionic Volume and Electrostatic Potential Analyses

Theoretical Assessment of the Ligand/Metal/Quadruplex Recognition in the Non-Canonical Nucleic Acids Structures

Quadruplexes (GQs), peculiar DNA/RNA motifs concentrated in specific genomic regions, play a vital role in biological processes including telomere stability and, hence, represent promising targets for anticancer therapy. GQs are formed by folding guanine-rich sequences into square planar G-tetrads which stack onto one another. Metal cations, most often potassium, further stabilize the architecture by coordinating the lone electron pairs of the O atoms. The presence of additional nucleic acid bases, however, has been recently observed experimentally and contributes substantially to the structural heterogeneity of quadruplexes. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to understand the factors governing the underlying complex processes in these structures. The current study employs DFT calculations to model the interactions between metal cations (K+, Na+, Sr2+) and diverse tetrads composed of a guanine layer in combination with a guanine (G)-, adenine (A)-, cytosine (C)-, thymine (T)-, or uracil (U)-based tetrad layer. Moreover, the addition of 4-(3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-yl)-2-(quinolin-2-yl)quinazoline to the modeled quadruplexes as a possible mechanism of its well-exerted antitumor effect is assessed. The calculations imply that the metal cation competition and ligand complexation are influenced by the balance between electronic and implicit/explicit solvation effects, the composition of the tetrad layers, as well as by the solvent exposure to the surrounding environment expressed in terms of different dielectric constant values. The provided results significantly enhance our understanding of quadruplex diversity, ligand recognition, and the underlying mechanisms of stabilization at an atomic level.

Ionic Liquids Endowed with Novel Hybrid Anions for Supercapacitors

The synthesis of a novel class of ionic liquids (ILs) with sulfimide-type anions is presented herein. [Py₁₄][PTSNTF] (N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium p-tosyl(trifluoromethyl)sulfonimide) shows that the maximal electrochemical window is as high as 5.3 V, higher than that of most reported ILs. In addition, thermogravimetry analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and the flammability test were also carried out for its thermal stability and practical safety. Impressively, these ILs exhibited good flame resistance and demonstrated an admirable intrinsic safety, in sharp contrast to ordinary electrolytes. Furthermore, the electrostatic potential of ILs was calculated theoretically, and the distribution of surrounding charge is intuitively understood. Cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge tests, and cycling stability measurement were performed to evaluate the potential as the electrolyte for supercapacitors. The insights obtained from the study of novel anions provide new ideas for the design of novel IL electrolytes for energy applications.

Preparation and gas separation performance of polyimide membranes endcapped with ionic liquid-type structures

A set of ionic liquid capped polyimide membranes was prepared using 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (IL1) and 1-aminopropylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imine (IL2) as the terminal groups. The products’ molecular weights, mechanical properties, and separation permeability (CO2/CH4) were investigated. For CO2/CH4 separation, the selectivity of the ionic liquid capped polyimide membranes was higher than that of noncapped ones. Among them, the membrane synthesized by 4.4′- diaminodiphenyl ether and 4.4′-(hexafluoroisopropyl) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as monomer, with IL1 as terminal group, displayed the best selectivity. Its permeability was 7.47 Barrer and selectivity 102.42, which exceeded the 1991 Robeson curve. Polyimide membranes capped by ionic liquid showed high gas selectivity and good gas permeability as well as good physical and chemical properties. Consequently, it can be concluded that introducing an ionic liquid structure to polyimide chains could make attractive membrane materials for various gas separation and related applications.

Porous liquids - the future is looking emptier

The development of microporosity in the liquid state is leading to an inherent change in the way we approach applications of functional porosity, potentially allowing access to new processes by exploiting the fluidity of these new materials. By engineering permanent porosity into a liquid, over the transient intermolecular porosity in all liquids, it is possible to design and form a porous liquid. Since the concept was proposed in 2007, and the first examples realised in 2015, the field has seen rapid advances among the types and numbers of porous liquids developed, our understanding of the structure and properties, as well as improvements in gas uptake and molecular separations. However, despite these recent advances, the field is still young, and with only a few applications reported to date, the potential that porous liquids have to transform the field of microporous materials remains largely untapped. In this review, we will explore the theory and conception of porous liquids and cover major advances in the area, key experimental characterisation techniques and computational approaches that have been employed to understand these systems, and summarise the investigated applications of porous liquids that have been presented to date. We also outline an emerging discovery workflow with recommendations for the characterisation required at each stage to both confirm permanent porosity and fully understand the physical properties of the porous liquid.

Understanding Gas Solubility of Pure Component and Binary Mixtures within Multivalent Ionic Liquids from Molecular Simulations

Understanding the molecular-level solubility of CO₂ and its mixtures is essential to the progress of gas-treating technologies. Herein, we use grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to study the single-component gas absorption of SO₂, N₂, CH₄, and H₂ and binary mixtures of CO₂/SO₂, CO₂/N₂, CO₂/CH₄, and CO₂/H₂ of varying mole fractions within multivalent ionic liquids (ILs). Our results highlight the importance of the free volume effect and the anion effect when interpreting the absorption behavior of these mixtures, similar to the behavior of CO₂ found in our previous study (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2020, 22, 20618-20633). The deviation of gas solubility between the pure component absorption versus the binary absorption, as well as the solubility selectivity, highlights the importance of the relative affinity of gas species within a mixture to the different anions. The absorption selectivity within a specific IL system can be predicted based on the relative gas affinity to the anion.

Solubility Behavior of CO2 in Ionic Liquids Based on Ionic Polarity Index Analyses

Ionic liquids (ILs) can serve as effective CO₂ solvents with an appropriate selection of different anions and cations. However, due to the large library of potential IL compositions, rapid screening methods are needed for characterizing and ranking the expected properties. We have recently proposed the ionic polarity index (IPI) parameter, effectively connecting volume-based approaches and electrostatic potential analyses and providing a single metric that can potentially be used to rapidly screen for desirable IL properties. In this work, the corresponding anion and cation IPIs are used to generate correlations with respect to the CO₂ volumetric solubility in ILs. The relationships are generally applicable to groups of ILs within a homologous ion series, and this can be particularly valuable for prescreening different ion pairings for maximizing gas solvation performance.
