Femtosecond Charge Density Modulations in Photoexcited CuWO4

Nature of Charge Carrier Recombination in CuWO4 Photoanodes for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

CuWO4 is a ternary semiconductor oxide with excellent visible light harvesting properties up to 550 nm and stability at high pH values, which make it a suitable material to build photoanodes for solar light conversion to hydrogen via water splitting. In this work, we studied the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of transparent CuWO4 electrodes with tunable light absorption and thickness, aiming at identifying the intrinsic bottlenecks of photogenerated charge carriers in this semiconductor. We found that electrodes with optimal CuWO4 thickness exhibit visible light activity due to the absorption of long-wavelength photons and a balanced electron and hole extraction from the oxide. The PEC performance of CuWO4 is light-intensity-dependent, with charge recombination increasing with light intensity and most photogenerated charge carriers recombining in bulk sites, as demonstrated by PEC tests performed in the presence of sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. The best-performing 580 nm thick CuWO4 electrode delivers a photocurrent of 0.37 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VSHE, with a 7% absorbed photon to current efficiency over the CuWO4 absorption spectrum.

Electronic Structure and Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in CuO Photocatalysts Probed by Surface Sensitive Femtosecond X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure Spectroscopy

CuO is often employed as a photocathode for H₂ evolution and CO₂ reduction, but observed efficiency is still far below the theoretical limit. To bridge the gap requires understanding the CuO electronic structure; however, computational efforts lack consensus on the orbital character of the photoexcited electron. In this study, we measure the femtosecond XANES spectra of CuO at the Cu M_2,3 and O L₁ edges to track the element-specific dynamics of electrons and holes. Results show that photoexcitation represents an O 2p to Cu 4s charge transfer state indicating the conduction band electron has primarily Cu 4s character. We also observe ultrafast mixing of Cu 3d and 4s conduction band states mediated by coherent phonons, with Cu 3d character of the photoelectron reaching a maximum of 16%. This is the first observation of the photoexcited redox state in CuO, and results provide a benchmark for theory where electronic structure modeling still relies heavily on model-dependent parametrization.

Recent Progress of the PAL-XFEL

The X-ray free-electron laser of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL-XFEL) was opened to users in 2017. Since then, significant progress has been made in PAL-XFEL operation and beamline experiments. This includes increasing the FEL pulse energy, increasing the FEL photon energy, generating self-seeding FEL, and trials of two-color operation. In the beamline, new instruments or endstations have been added or are being prepared. Overall, beamline operation has been stabilized since its initiation, which has enabled excellent scientific results through efficient user experiments. In this paper, we describe details of the recent progress of the PAL-XFEL.
