Brightly Luminescent CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals through Ultracentrifugation

Highly Thermally Sensitive Cascaded Wannier-Mott Exciton Ionization/Carrier Localization in Manganese-Doped Perovskite Nanocrystals

Transition-metal doping in perovskite nanocrystals strongly alters the photophysical properties of these nanocrystals. However, the details of the underlying thermal and optical processes within such an intriguing symmetry-breaking nanosystem are far from clear. Herein, we study the sensitively temperature-dependent and highly competent delocalized exciton and transition-metal ion-captured carrier recombination processes in manganese-doped CsPbBr_0.6Cl_2.4 nanocrystals. The combined experimental and theoretical studies reveal that both the exciton ionization and capture of the band-edge carriers by the manganese ions play the dominant roles in determining the proportion of the manganese ions-dominated recombination process. A density functional theory calculation of the temporal fluctuation of the manganese ions-accommodated localized orbitals further confirms that the thermally enhanced nonadiabatic electron-phonon coupling promotes the probability of the carrier localization. These findings reveal the respective crucial roles of the exciton ionization and carrier capture in the localized recombination process in the transition-metal-doped semiconductor nanocrystals.

Effect of ligand groups on photoexcited charge carrier dynamics at the perovskite/TiO2 interface

The work proposed here aims to describe the dynamics of photoexcited charge carriers at the interface between the perovskite and electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and the effect that the interface morphology has on these dynamics. This is done in an effort to further develop the understanding of these materials so that their chemical composition and morphology may be better utilized to improve PSCs by means of increasing the power conversion efficiency (PCE), maximizing the chemical stability of PSCs to lengthen their lifespan, finding the cheapest and easiest materials to synthesize which have beneficial properties in photovoltaics, etc. This is done by using density functional theory to model the interface and open system Redfield theory to describe the charge carrier dynamics. We find that the charge transfer characteristics at the perovskite/ETL interface depend greatly on the choice of ligands adsorbed on the ETL that act as a bridge between the perovskite and ETL. The two ligand choices discussed here go so far as to determine whether the system will undergo a Förster energy transfer or a Dexter energy transfer upon photoexcitation.

First principles modeling of excited state dynamics of charge carriers at the interface between the perovskite and electron transport layer in perovskite solar cells identifies an effect of the interface morphology onto efficiency of charge transfer.

Defect Tolerance Mechanism Revealed! Influence of Polaron Occupied Surface Trap States on CsPbBr3 Nanocrystal Photoluminescence: Ab Initio Excited-State Dynamics

Lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) show exceptional defect tolerance which has been attributed to their unique electronic structure, where defect energy levels are not introduced inside the fundamental bandgap, and the role of polarons in screening charge carriers from defects. Here, we use ab initio atomistic simulations to explore the interplay between various surface chemistries (A = Cs⁺, R'NH₃⁺; X = Br^-, RCOO^-) used to passivate a CsPbBr₃ NC surface and their impact on the ground-state (GS) and excited-state (ES) photophysical properties. We investigate pristine fully passivated surfaces and A-X vacancy defects that reflect chemical reactions A⁺ + X^- → AX on the surface, which result in ligand desorption. For each surface configuration, calculations are performed in the GS and lowest ES (L-ES) electronic configurations, approximating polaron formation after photoexcitation. For models with A-X surface vacancies, we find that localized electron surface trap (ST) states emerge ∼100-400 meV below the pristine S_e band in the L-ES configuration due to polaronic nuclear reorganization. Surprisingly, these trap states contribute relatively bright S_h → ST spectral features. To test if these surface trap states remain bright in a dynamic (thermal) situation we implement excited-state molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the surface defected model shows an enhanced nonradiative recombination rate which reduces the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 95% for the pristine surface to 75%. This is accompanied by an order of magnitude reduction in PL intensity and a red shift of the transition energy. This study provides more evidence of the defect tolerance of LHP NCs along with evidence of surface trap states contributing to efficient photoluminescence. The observation of relatively bright surface trap states could provide insight into photophysical phenomena, such as size-dependent stretched-exponential photoluminescence decay and Stokes shifts.

Erasable Cs4PbBr6 quantum dots glass with switchable photoluminescence

Encapsulating quantum dots (QDs) into a transparent glass matrix can not only increase their stability but also explore new luminescence properties. Herein, erasable Cs₄PbBr₆ QDs with switchable photoluminescence are successfully obtained by a heat-treatment method in a borosilicate glass matrix. First, QDs can self-crystalize in borosilicate glass without the heat treatment. Second, it is found that when the QDs glass is heat treated below T_g, QDs can be destroyed. Further, when the QDs glass is reheat treated above T_g, atom rearrangement can occur and QDs can reprecipitate in the glass matrix. Consequently, the switchable photoluminescence of QDs can be achieved. The special erasable QDs glass and switchable photoluminescence in this work can resolve the technological challenge of recovering the luminescence performance of QDs after they have been destroyed.

State of the Art and Prospects for Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, with many exciting properties and great potential for a broad range of applications, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics and photocatalysis. The ease with which metal-halide perovskites can be synthesized in the form of brightly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, as well as their tunable and intriguing optical and electronic properties, has attracted researchers from different disciplines of science and technology. In the last few years, there has been a significant progress in the shape-controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals and understanding of their properties and applications. In this comprehensive review, researchers having expertise in different fields (chemistry, physics, and device engineering) of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have joined together to provide a state of the art overview and future prospects of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystal research.
