Maximizing the Carrier Mobilities of Metal-Organic Frameworks Comprising Stacked Pentacene Units

Thin Film Formation Based on a Nanoporous Metal-Organic Framework by Layer-By-Layer Deposition

Understanding the structure of thin films is essential for successful applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as low k-dielectrics in electronic devices. This study focuses on the thin film formation of the 3D nanoporous MOF Cu2(bdc)2(dabco). The thin films are prepared by a layer-by-layer technique with varying deposition cycles (1 to 50). Thin film morphologies and crystallographic properties were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). AFM revealed an island growth (Volmer-Weber) with plate-like shaped islands. FTIR and GIXD revealed that Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) crystals form already during the first preparation cycle. The heights of the islands do not increase linearly with the number of deposition cycles, suggesting multiple growth stages. X-ray diffraction pole figures uncover a uniplanar texture of the Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) crystals, together with randomly oriented crystallites. The fraction of uniplanar oriented crystals increases with each deposition cycle, reaching a maximum of 75% at ten deposition cycles, simultaneously achieving complete substrate coverage. However, already at five cycles, an additional phase of randomly oriented copper-terephthalate (Cu2(bdc)) crystals appeared; this phase reaches a fraction of 22% at the largest film thickness (50 cycles). In summary, a detailed understanding of the thin film formation of an archetypal layer-pillar MOF is presented, elucidating how films grow in terms of their morphology and crystalline properties. Samples prepared by ten cycles show complete coverage of the substrate together with the highest degree of preferred crystal orientation. These results establish a deepened understanding of critical parameters for MOF thin film applications, such as complete substrate coverage and definition of the nanopores relative to the substrate surface.

On-off conduction photoswitching in modelled spiropyran-based metal-organic frameworks

Materials with photoswitchable electronic properties and conductance values that can be reversibly changed over many orders of magnitude are highly desirable. Metal-organic framework (MOF) films functionalized with photoresponsive spiropyran molecules demonstrated the general possibility to switch the conduction by light with potentially large on-off-ratios. However, the fabrication of MOF materials in a trial-and-error approach is cumbersome and would benefit significantly from in silico molecular design. Based on the previous proof-of-principle investigation, here, we design photoswitchable MOFs which incorporate spiropyran photoswitches at controlled positions with defined intermolecular distances and orientations. Using multiscale modelling and automated workflow protocols, four MOF candidates are characterized and their potential for photoswitching the conductivity is explored. Using ab initio calculations of the electronic coupling between the molecules in the MOF, we show that lattice distances and vibrational flexibility tremendously modulate the possible conduction photoswitching between spiropyran- and merocyanine-based MOFs upon light absorption, resulting in average on-off ratios higher than 530 and 4200 for p- and n-conduction switching, respectively. Further functionalization of the photoswitches with electron-donating/-withdrawing groups is demonstrated to shift the energy levels of the frontier orbitals, permitting a guided design of new spiropyran-based photoswitches towards controlled modification between electron and hole conduction in a MOF.

Linker Redox Mediated Control of Morphology and Properties in Semiconducting Iron-Semiquinoid Coordination Polymers

The emergence of conductive 2D and less commonly 3D coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promises novel applications in many fields. However, the synthetic parameters for these electronically complex materials are not thoroughly understood. Here we report a new 3D semiconducting CP Fe₅ (C₆ O₆ )₃ , which is a fusion of 2D Fe-semiquinoid materials and 3D cubic Fe_x (C₆ O₆ )_y materials, by using a different initial redox-state of the C₆ O₆ linker. The material displays high electrical conductivity (0.02 S cm^-1 ), broad electronic transitions, promising thermoelectric behavior (S² σ=7.0×10^-9  W m^-1  K^-2 ), and strong antiferromagnetic interactions at room temperature. This material illustrates how controlling the oxidation states of redox-active components in conducting CPs/MOFs can be a "pre-synthetic" strategy to carefully tune material topologies and properties in contrast to more commonly encountered post-synthetic modifications.
