Cavitation Mean Expectation Time in a Stretched Lennard-Jones Fluid under Confinement

A capillary-induced negative pressure is able to initiate heterogeneous cavitation

A capillarity-induced negative pressure is of general importance for understanding the phase behaviors of liquids in small pores and cracks. A unique example is the embolism in the xylem of plants and the cavitation at the limiting negative pressure generated by evaporation of water from nanocapillaries in the cell walls of leaves. In this work, by combining the effect of a capillary and cavitation together, we demonstrate with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that capillarity is able to induce spontaneous cavitation in the presence of hydrophobic heterogeneities. Our simulation results reveal separately how the capillary generates a negative pressure and how the generated negative pressure affects the onset of cavitation. We then interpret the cavitation mechanism and determine the occurrence of cavitation as a function of the hydrophobicity of the nucleating substrates where the cavitation initiates and as a function of the hydrophilicity of the capillary tube from which the negative pressure generates. Our results reveal that the capillary-induced cavitation can be described well with a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism, within the framework of classical nucleation theory.

Vapor Nanobubbles around Heated Nanoparticles: Wetting Dependence of the Local Fluid Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Nucleation

Plasmonic nanobubbles are composite objects resulting from the interaction between light and metallic nanoparticles immersed in a fluid. Plasmonic nanobubbles have applications in photothermal therapies, drug delivery, microfluidic manipulations, and solar energy conversion. Their early formation is, however, barely characterized due to the short time and length scales relevant to the process. Here, we investigate, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the effect of nanoparticle wettability on both the local fluid thermodynamics and the kinetics of nanobubble generation in water. We first show that the local onset temperature of vapor nucleation decreases with the nanoparticle/water interfacial energy and may be 100 K below the water spinodal temperature in the case of weak nanoparticle/water interactions. Second, we demonstrate that vapor nucleation may be slower in the case of weak water/nanoparticle interactions. This result, which is qualitatively at odds with the predictions of isothermal classical nucleation theory, may be explained by the competition between two antagonist effects: while, classically, hydrophobicity increases the vapor nucleation rate, it also penalizes interfacial thermal transfer, slowing down kinetics. The kinetics of heat transfer from the nanoparticle to water is controlled by the interfacial thermal conductance. This quantity turns out not only to decrease with the nanoparticle hydrophobicity but also drops down prior to phase change, yielding even longer nucleation times. Such conclusions were reached by considering the comparison between MD and continuous heat transfer models. These results put forward the role of nanoparticle wettability in the generation of plasmonic nanobubbles observed experimentally and open the path to the control of boiling using nanopatterned surfaces.

Near-Wall Cavitation Effect: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Cavitation has been the subject of abundant studies, but the internal mechanism of cavitation is less well known. In this article, a microlevel near-wall model was established by using LAMMPS to present the process of cavitation effect. The results of molecular dynamics simulation revealed the fluctuation process of the liquid near the wall with the change in pressure. Molecular dynamics was also used to evaluate the void volume fraction and density distribution of the system. The results exhibited that the cavitation process can be divided into two stages: the initial cavitation stage and the rapid growth stage. Based on these results, the effects of wettability and initial system temperature on the near-wall cavitation effect were demonstrated. The results indicated that the hydrophobic near-wall forms a gas layer to weaken the density fluctuation, while the hydrophilic wall is opposite. Increasing the temperature could positively affect molecular motion and cavitation. This work provides a theoretical basis for further exploration of the cavitation effect.

Effects of compressibility and wetting on the liquid-vapor transition in a confined fluid

When a fluid is constrained to a fixed, finite volume, the conditions for liquid-vapor equilibrium are different from those for the infinite volume or constant pressure cases. There is even a range of densities for which no bubble can form, and the liquid at a pressure below the bulk saturated vapor pressure remains indefinitely stable. As the fluid density in mineral inclusions is often derived from the temperature of bubble disappearance, a correction for the finite volume effect is required. Previous works have explained these phenomena and proposed a numerical procedure to compute the correction for pure water in a container completely wet by the liquid phase. Here, we revisit these works and provide an analytic formulation valid for any fluid, including the case of partial wetting. We introduce the Berthelot-Laplace length λ = 2γκ/3, which combines the liquid isothermal compressibility κ and its surface tension γ. The quantitative effects are fully captured by a single, nondimensional parameter: the ratio of λ to the container size.
