Advances in sample environments for neutron scattering for colloid and interface science

This review describes recent advances in sample environments across the full complement of applicable neutron scattering techniques to colloid and interface science. Temperature, pressure, flow, tensile testing, ultrasound, chemical reactions, IR/visible/UV light, confinement, humidity and electric and magnetic field application, as well as tandem X-ray methods, are all addressed. Consideration for material choices in sample environments and data acquisition methods are also covered as well as discussion of current and potential future use of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Research Progress in Structure Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of Small-Molecule Silicone Surfactants

Silicone surfactants have garnered significant research attention owing to their superior properties, such as wettability, ductility, and permeability. Small-molecular silicone surfactants with simple molecular structures outperform polymeric silicone surfactants in terms of surface activity, emulsification, wetting, foaming, and other areas. Moreover, silicone surfactants with small molecules exhibit a diverse and rich molecular structure. This review discusses various synthetic routes for the synthesis of different classes of surfactants, including single-chain, "umbrella" structure, double chain, bolaform, Gemini, and stimulus-responsive surfactants. The fundamental surface/interface properties of the synthesized surfactants are also highlighted. Additionally, these surfactants have demonstrated enormous potential in agricultural synergism, drug delivery, mineral flotation, enhanced oil recovery, separation, and extraction, and foam fire-fighting.

Effects of Shale Pore Size and Connectivity on scCO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Investigation

The differences in pore width distributions and connectivity of shale reservoirs have significant influences on supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂)-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂ EOR) in shale. Herein, the molecular dynamics simulation was adopted to investigate the microscopic mechanism of CO₂ EOR in the shale nanopores with different pore size width distributions and pore connectivity. The results show that the pore connectivity has significant effects on the oil displacement, and the recovery efficiency is ordered as: connected pore > double pore > single pore for the 3 nm pore, which are 91.32, 74.43, and 65.93%, respectively. Therefore, the increase in pore connectivity can significantly improve the recovery efficiency of the small pore of the connected pore system. For the shale reservoirs with different pore width distributions, the oil recovery rate of large pores is generally higher than that of small pores. In addition, the displacement of oil in the small pore of the double pore system is accelerated due to the pushing effect of the discharge fluid from the large pore. The results furnish a certain theoretical support for the research of the microscopic mechanism of CO₂ EOR in the shale pore with different pore width distributions and connectivity and the exploit of shale oil.

Fabrication and application of composite adsorbents made by one-pot electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in surfactant ionic liquid/nanocellulose mixtures

Previously, surfactant-assisted exfoliated graphene oxide (sEGO) formed with the triple-chain surfactant TC14 (sodium 1,4-bis(neopentyloxy)-3-(neopentylcarbonyl)-1,4-dioxobutane-2-sulfonate) was applied in wastewater treatment. The extent of dye-removal and the adsorption capacity of the sEGO formed with this triple-chain surfactant outperformed those of two other systems, namely, the di-chain version of TC14 (AOT14; sodium 1,2-bis-(2,2-dimethyl-propoxycarbonyl)-ethanesulfonate) and the single-chain surfactant sodium n-dodecylsulfate. In the present study, to further optimise the surfactant chemical structure, the sodium ion of TC14 was substituted with 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium (BMIM) generating surfactant ionic liquids (SAILs; 1-butyl-3-imidazolium 1,4-bis(neopentyloxy)-3-(neopentyloxycarbonyl)-1,4-dioxobutane-2-sulfonate), hereafter denoted as BMIM-TC14. This SAIL, together with nanofibrillated kenaf cellulose (NFC), was used to electrochemically exfoliate graphite, yielding BMIM-TC14 sEGO/NFC composites. These highly hydrophobic polymer composites were then used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. ¹H NMR spectroscopy was used to elucidate the structure of the synthesised SAILs. The morphologies of the resulting nanocomposites were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Analysis using small-angle neutron scattering was performed to examine the aggregation behaviour of sEGO and custom-made SAILs. Zeta potential, surface tension, and dynamic light-scattering measurements were used to study the aqueous properties and colloidal stability of the suspension. Amongst the surfactants tested, BMIM-TC14 sEGO/NFC exhibited the highest MB adsorption ability, achieving 99% dye removal under optimum conditions. These results highlight the importance of modifying the hydrophilic moieties of amphiphilic compounds to improve the performance of sEGO/NFC composites as effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Geometry transformation of ionic surfactants and adsorption behavior on water/n-decane-interface: calculation by molecular dynamics simulation and DFT study

Understanding the effect of surfactant structure on their ability to modify interfacial properties is of great scientific and industrial interest. In this work, we have synthesized four amide based ionic surfactants under acidic or basic conditions, including CTHA·HCl, CTEA·HCl, CTHA⁻Na⁺ and CTEA⁻Na⁺. Experiments have proved that the anionic surfactant with polyethylene oxide groups (CTEA⁻Na⁺) had the lowest surface tension on the water/n-decane interface. Molecular dynamics simulations have been applied to investigate the structural effect on the adsorption behavior of four different surfactants. The surface tension, interface thickness, interface formation energy, density profiles, order parameters, radial distribution function on the water/n-decane interfaces were calculated and compared. During the equilibrium states, we found that the interface configuration of two cationic surfactants are almost linear while the two anionic surfactants are changed to bending shapes due to the different positions of the hydrophilic head groups. Further DFT study and wavefunction analysis of surfactants have shown that CTEA⁻Na⁺ can form stronger vdW interactions with n-decane molecules due to a more neutral electrostatic potential distribution. Meanwhile, the introduction of polyethylene oxide groups has offered more H-bonding sites and resulted in more concentrated H-bonding interactions with water molecules. The difference of weak interactions may contribute to the conformational change and finally affect the interface properties of these ionic surfactants.

Using Microemulsions: Formulation Based on Knowledge of Their Mesostructure

Microemulsions, as thermodynamically stable mixtures of oil, water, and surfactant, are known and have been studied for more than 70 years. However, even today there are still quite a number of unclear aspects, and more recent research work has modified and extended our picture. This review gives a short overview of how the understanding of microemulsions has developed, the current view on their properties and structural features, and in particular, how they are related to applications. We also discuss more recent developments regarding nonclassical microemulsions such as surfactant-free (ultraflexible) microemulsions or ones containing uncommon solvents or amphiphiles (like antagonistic salts). These new findings challenge to some extent our previous understanding of microemulsions, which therefore has to be extended to look at the different types of microemulsions in a unified way. In particular, the flexibility of the amphiphilic film is the key property to classify different microemulsion types and their properties in this review. Such a classification of microemulsions requires a thorough determination of their structural properties, and therefore, the experimental methods to determine microemulsion structure and dynamics are reviewed briefly, with a particular emphasis on recent developments in the field of direct imaging by means of electron microscopy. Based on this classification of microemulsions, we then discuss their applications, where the application demands have to be met by the properties of the microemulsion, which in turn are controlled by the flexibility of their amphiphilic interface. Another frequently important aspect for applications is the control of the rheological properties. Normally, microemulsions are low viscous and therefore enhancing viscosity has to be achieved by either having high concentrations (often not wished for) or additives, which do not significantly interfere with the microemulsion. Accordingly, this review gives a comprehensive account of the properties of microemulsions, including most recent developments and bringing them together from a united viewpoint, with an emphasis on how this affects the way of formulating microemulsions for a given application with desired properties.
