Electrochemical Approach for the Synthesis of Ultrasmall Cu13 Clusters and Their Application in the Detection of Endotoxin

Constructing perfect cubic Ag-Cu alloyed nanoclusters through selective elimination of phosphine ligands

The aspiration of chemists has always been to design and achieve control over nanoparticle morphology at the atomic level. Here, we report a synthesis strategy and crystal structure of a perfect cubic Ag-Cu alloyed nanocluster, [Ag55Cu8I12(S-C6H32,4(CH3)2)24][(PPh4)] (Ag55Cu8I12 for short). The structure of this cluster was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further validated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The surface deviation of the cube was measured to be 0.291 Å, making it the flattest known cube to date.

Target-Induced Electrochemical Sensor Based on Foldable Aptamer and MoS2@MWCNTs-PEI for Enhanced Detection of AFB1 in Peanuts

Herein, a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on aptamer folding was constructed to detect aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in peanuts. Specifically, polyethylenimine-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2@MWCNTs-PEI) were used as the electrode matrix to enable a large specific surface area, which were characterized by the Randles-Sevcik equation. Additionally, AuNPs were used to immobilize the aptamer via the Au-S covalent bond and provide a favorable microenvironment for signal enhancement. Methylene blue (MB) was modified at the proximal 3' termini of the aptamer as the capture probe, while the signal transduction of the sensor was obtained through changes in conformation and position of MB induced by the binding between AFB1 and the probe. Changes in spatial conformation could be recorded by electrochemical methods more readily. This electrochemical aptasensor demonstrated remarkable sensitivity to AFB1 with an extensive detection range (1 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL) and a lower limit detection (1.0 × 10-3 ng/mL). Moreover, using the constructed aptasensor, AFB1 was identified successfully in peanut samples, with recoveries ranging from 95.83 to 107.53%, illustrating its potential use in determining AFB1 in food.

First-Principles Investigation of Size Effects on Cohesive Energies of Transition-Metal Nanoclusters

The cohesive energy of transition-metal nanoparticles is crucial to understanding their stability and fundamental properties, which are essential for developing new technologies and applications in fields such as catalysis, electronics, energy storage, and biomedical engineering. In this study, we systematically investigate the size-dependent cohesive energies of all the 3d, 4d, and 5d transition-metal nanoclusters (small nanoparticles) based on a plane-wave-based method within general gradient approximation using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Our results show that the cohesive energies of nanoclusters decrease with decreasing size due to the increased surface-to-volume ratio and quantum confinement effects. A comparison of nanoclusters with different geometries reveals that the cohesive energy decreases as the number of nanocluster layers decreases. Notably, monolayer nanoclusters exhibit the lowest cohesive energies. We also find that the size-dependent cohesive energy trends are different for different transition metals, with some metals exhibiting stronger size effects than others. Our findings provide insights into the fundamental properties of transition-metal nanoclusters and have potential implications for their applications in various fields, such as catalysis, electronics, and biomedical engineering.
