Morphology and Kinetics of Aggregation of Silver Nanoparticles Induced with Regioregular Cationic Polythiophene

Impact of pH on the stability, dissolution and aggregation kinetics of silver nanoparticles

Widespread usage of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products has resulted in their presence in the aquatic environment. The evolution of the properties of AgNPs with changes in pH and time in terms of colloidal stability, dissolution and aggregation were investigated in a series of short and long-term experiments using freshly synthesized uncoated AgNPs. The solution pH modifies the surface charge and the oxidative dissolution of AgNPs. As a result, the particle behavior varied in acidic and alkaline conditions. The particle size decreased with the increasing pH at a given time frame resulting in lower aggregation in the higher pH regime and increased particle stability. These results have been further proved with the direct evidence obtained using time resolved in situ imaging acquired through Liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM). Furthermore, the magnitude of the impact of the pH on the particle properties is higher than the impact of the dissolved oxygen concentration. The derived empirical formulae reflect that the AgNP oxidation depends on both dissolved oxygen and protons while the AgNP dissolution increasing with the increase of either of these. Overall, our results highlight the impact of the solution pH on the evolution of the properties of AgNPs over the time and provide an insight to confidently extend the results to predict the environmental transformation of AgNPs from ideal systems to the real.

Salt-Responsive Fe3O4 Nanocomposites and Phase Behavior in Water

The ability to achieve exquisite control over polymer building blocks within multicompartment magnetite nanocomposites (NCs) to afford predictable and ordered packing hierarchical structures remains a significant challenge for the design of NCs. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop new types of nano-dimensional assemblies that undergo responsive shape shift, size, phase, and morphological transitions, especially for processes that are triggered by biologically relevant stimuli such as ionic gradients to meet the demand for diverse applications. Accordingly, we report an unprecedented concept for the preparation of salt-responsive magnetite/polyaniline composite nanoassemblies with chemically distinct dual-compartment structures. The size, shape, and nano-dimensional phase separation of the PANI assemblies within NCs were adjusted in a facile manner with incremental changes in salt gradients using NaCl(aq). Composition effects bestow desirable diversiform shape, size, and phase behavior of the incorporated conductive polymer via dynamic H-bonding. The size, shape, and superparamagnetic character of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are unaffected by a "salting-in" process. The mechanism, gradual morphological evolution, interchangeable nanophase separation, and ion-stimulated disassembly of PANI building blocks for these magneto/ion-responsive polymer-composites at elevated ionic strength are strongly supported by DLS, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, and equilibrium dye (MB/MO) recognition studies.

Cellular proliferation and differentiation induced by single-layer molybdenum disulfide and mediation mechanisms of proteins via the Akt-mTOR-p70S6K signaling pathway

Single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS₂) is a novel kind of 2D nanosheet that has attracted great attention regarding its use in biosensors, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and therapy. However, our results demonstrated that SLMoS₂ accelerated proliferation and promoted myogenic differentiation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human embryonic lung fibroblasts (HELFs). The abnormal proliferation and differentiation of HELFs contribute to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Specifically, SLMoS₂ significantly stimulated the expression of myofibroblast- and mesenchymal-associated genes and proteins. The Akt-mTOR-p70S6K signaling pathway plays a critical role in the acceleration of proliferation and promotion of myogenic differentiation and EMT in HELFs induced by SLMoS₂. After cell uptake, SLMoS₂ was primarily located in the cytoplasm and the perinuclear region and activated Akt-dependent signaling due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding markedly inhibited the cellular uptake of SLMoS₂ and the production of intracellular ROS due to an increased thickness and reduced adhesion of HELFs. BSA binding also mitigated the SLMoS₂-activated phosphorylation of Akt-dependent signaling pathways. This study is the first to illustrate the induction of cellular proliferation and differentiation by SLMoS₂ and the related mediation by proteins through Akt-mTOR-p70S6K signaling pathway.

Effect of long-range interactions on nanoparticle-induced aggregation

The process of attaching liquid media molecules to dispersed nanoparticles is studied by numerically investigating the time evolution of the size distribution of the emerging aggregates. Within the considered mechanism of aggregation, both the primary particles and the resulting aggregates are assumed to connect freely dispersing molecules, but the particles and aggregates are not allowed to self-link or self-assemble at each evolution stage of the system, due to, e.g., repulsive interactions. The process of random attachment of dispersing molecules to immersed nanoparticles and aggregates is considered to be driven by attractive long-range interactions of the van der Waals type. The molecule binding rate is, in consequence, modeled as being dependent not only on the size and surface morphology of the existing aggregates, but also on the van der Waals forces, whose strength is itself treated as dependent on the aggregate size. It is demonstrated that these forces diminish, in general, the inhomogeneity of aggregate size. Such an effect is shown to be especially distinct when the interaction strength is relatively large but does not increase as aggregates increase in size, i.e., when strongly attracted media molecules functionalize the resultant aggregates to prevent the increase of the interaction strength. This result can be helpful to construct stable complex substances containing aggregates with low size dispersion. Surprisingly, the evolution of aggregating systems toward more significant inhomogeneity takes place when the interaction strength is initially large and increases fast enough with the size of aggregates.
