Abstract
Hofmeister effects play a critical role in numerous physicochemical and biological phenomena, including the solubility and/or accumulation of proteins, the activities of enzymes, ion transport in biochannels, the structure of lipid bilayers, and the dynamics of vesicle opening and exocytosis. This minireview focuses on how ionic specificity affects the physicochemical properties of biomolecules to regulate cellular exocytosis, vesicular content, and nanovesicle opening. We summarize recent progress in further understanding Hofmeister effects on biomacromolecules and their applications in biological systems. These important steps have increased our understanding of the Hofmeister effects on cellular exocytosis, vesicular content, and nanovesicle opening. Increasing evidence is firmly establishing that the ions along the Hofmeister series play an important role in living organisms that has often been ignored.

Abstract
Ion-specific effects widely exist in biological and chemical systems and cannot be explained by classical theories. The complexity of ion-specific effects in protein systems at the molecular level necessitates the use of mimetic models involving smaller molecules, such as amino acids, oligopeptides, and other organic molecules bearing amide bonds. Therefore, it is of theoretical value to determine the effect of additional salts on the aggregation transitions of acyl amino acid surfactants. Herein, the effects of specific tetraalkylammonium ions (TAA+) on sodium lauroyl glycinate (SLG) aggregation were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy. Although previous studies have shown that the kosmotropic TAA+ ions tend to induce micellar growth or micelle-to-vesicle transitions of some anionic surfactants, TAA+ addition in the present study induced partial vesicle-to-micelle transitions in SLG solutions. The chemical trapping (CT) method was employed to estimate changes in the interfacial molarities of water, amide bonds, and carboxylate groups during such transitions. The vesicle-to-micelle transitions were accompanied by a marked rise in interfacial water molarity and a decline in interfacial amide bonds molarity, suggesting that the hydrated TAA+ entered the interfacial region and disrupted hydrogen bonding, thus preventing the SLG monomers from packing tightly. Molecular dynamic simulation was also performed to demonstrate the salt-induced cleavage of amide-amide bonds between SLG headgroups. Furthermore, both CT and DLS results show that the ability of tetraalkylammonium cations to induce such transitions increased with increasing size and hydrophobicity of the cation, which follows the Hofmeister series. The current study offers critical molecular-level evidence for understanding the specific effects of tetraalkylammonium ions on the aggregation transitions of an acyl amino acid surfactant.

Abstract
The interpretation of a salt's effect on protein stability traditionally discriminates low concentration regimes (<0.3 M), dominated by electrostatic forces, and high concentration regimes, generally described by ion-specific Hofmeister effects. However, increased theoretical and experimental studies have highlighted observations of the Hofmeister phenomena at concentration ranges as low as 0.001 M. Reasonable quantitative predictions of such observations have been successfully achieved throughout the inclusion of ion dispersion forces in classical electrostatic theories. This molecular description is also on the basis of quantitative estimates obtained resorting to surface/bulk solvent partition models developed for ion-specific Hofmeister effects. However, the latter are limited by the availability of reliable structures representative of the unfolded state. Here, we use myoglobin as a model to explore how ion-dependency on the nature of the unfolded state affects protein stability, combining spectroscopic techniques with molecular dynamic simulations. To this end, the thermal and chemical stability of myoglobin was assessed in the presence of three different salts (NaCl, (NH4)2SO4 and Na2SO4), at physiologically relevant concentrations (0-0.3 M). We observed mild destabilization of the native state induced by each ion, attributed to unfavorable neutralization and hydrogen-bonding with the protein side-chains. Both effects, combined with binding of Na+, Cl- and SO42- to the thermally unfolded state, resulted in an overall destabilization of the protein. Contrastingly, ion binding was hindered in the chemically unfolded conformation, due to occupation of the binding sites by urea molecules. Such mechanistic action led to a lower degree of destabilization, promoting surface tension effects that stabilized myoglobin according to the Hofmeister series. Therefore, we demonstrate that Hofmeister effects on protein stability are modulated by the heterogeneous physico-chemical nature of the unfolded state. Altogether, our findings evidence the need to characterize the structure of the unfolded state when attempting to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of salts on protein stability.

Abstract
The study of ion specificities of charged-neutral random copolymers is of great importance for understanding specific ion effects on natural macromolecules. In the present work, we have investigated the specific anion effects on the thermoresponsive behavior of poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride]-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) [P(METAC-co-NIPAM)] random copolymers. Our study demonstrates that the anion specificities of the P(METAC-co-NIPAM) copolymers are dependent on their chemical compositions. The specific anion effects on the copolymers with high mole fractions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) are similar to those on the PNIPAM homopolymer. As the mole fraction of PNIPAM decreases to a certain value, a V-shaped anion series can be observed in terms of the anion-specific cloud point temperature of the copolymer, as induced by the interplay between different anion-polymer interactions. Our study also suggests that both the direct and the indirect anion-polymer interactions contribute to the anion specificities of the copolymers. This work would improve our understanding of the relationship between the ion specificities and the ion-macromolecule interactions for naturally occurring macromolecules.

Abstract
The ionic effects on synthetic polymers have attracted extensive attention due to the crucial role of ions in the determination of the properties of synthetic polymers. This review places the focus on specific ion effects, multivalent ion effects, and ionic hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity effects in synthetic polymer systems from solutions to brushes and gels. The specific ion effects on neutral polymers are determined by both the direct and indirect specific ion-polymer interactions, whereas the ion specificities of charged polymers are mainly dominated by the specific ion-pairing interactions. The ionic cross-linking effect exerted by the multivalent ions is widely used to tune the properties of polyelectrolytes, while the reentrant behavior of polyelectrolytes in the presence of multivalent ions still remains poorly understood. The ionic hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity effects not only can be applied to make strong polyelectrolytes thermosensitive, but also can be used to prepare polymeric nano-objects and to control the wettability of polyelectrolyte brush-modified surfaces. The not well-studied ionic hydrogen bond effects are also discussed in the last section of this review.
