Pore Diameter of Mesoporous Silica Modulates Oxidation of H2O2-Sensing Chromophore in a Porous Matrix

Synergistic Effects in N,O-Comodified Carbon Nanotubes Boost Highly Selective Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction to H2 O2

Electrochemical 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a promising route for renewable and on-site H2 O2 production. Oxygen-rich carbon nanotubes have been demonstrated their high selectivity (≈80%), yet tailoring the composition and structure of carbon nanotubes to further enhance the selectivity and widen working voltage range remains a challenge. Herein, combining formamide condensation coating and mild temperature calcination, a nitrogen and oxygen comodified carbon nanotubes (N,O-CNTs) electrocatalyst is synthesized, which shows excellent selective (>95%) H2 O2 selectivity in a wide voltage range (from 0 to 0.65 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode). It is significantly superior to the corresponding selectivity values of CNTs (≈50% in 0-0.65 V vs RHE) and O-CNTs (≈80% in 0.3-0.65 V vs RHE). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the C neighbouring to N is the active site. Introducing O-related species can strengthen the adsorption of intermediates *OOH, while N-doping can weaken the adsorption of in situ generated *O and optimize the *OOH adsorption energy, thus improving the 2-electron pathway. With optimized N,O-CNTs catalysts, a Janus electrode is designed by adjusting the asymmetric wettability to achieve H2 O2 productivity of 264.8 mol kgcat -1 h-1 .

Development of an Ultrasmall and Biocompatible Platinum Nanozyme Encapsulated by Zwitterionic Dendrimer for Highly Sensitive Detection of Glucose

Many kinds of noble metal nanoparticles can mimic the peroxidase-like function of horseradish peroxidase, which results in their wide applications in bio-related detection and drug delivery. However, those metal nanoparticles usually have low stability and reduced catalytic activity in biological complex medium. Herein, a zwitterionic peroxidase-like enzyme has been developed, which has high stability in fibrinogen solutions and high sensitivity for glucose detection. Maleic anhydride, cysteamine, and zwitterionic peptide EKEKC (EK-5) were used to modify generation 5 poly(amido amine) dendrimers (G5 PAMAM) to prepare zwitterionic dendrimer G5MEKnC with nonfouling properties. Finally, the G5MEKnC-encapsulated platinum nanoparticles (Pt_n-G5MEK50C) were prepared by entrapping the platinum nanoparticles (1.40 nm) in the catalytic centers in the interior of G5MEK50C. Pt₅₅-G5MEK50C showed high stability in the buffer solution and the fibrinogen solution within 4 days. They also displayed high biocompatibility toward HeLa cells based on cytotoxicity results and morphological observations. Furthermore, the catalytic oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine with H₂O₂ by Pt₅₅-G5MEK50C followed the Michaelis-Menten equation, which confirmed their peroxidase-like properties. The catalytic mechanism was due to the generation of ^•OH from H₂O₂. More importantly, the peroxidase-like ability of Pt₅₅-G5MEK50C was successfully used to establish a method for the determination of glucose concentration with a broad linear range of 1-2000 μM and a low detection limit of 0.1 μM. This method was highly accurate for the determination of glucose concentration in plasma. The zwitterionic dendrimer template enhanced the properties of Pt₅₅-G5MEK50C. Taken together, a new kind of biocompatible nanozyme has been developed and successfully used for the sensitive detection of glucose in bio-related medium.

Confining a Protein-Containing Water Nanodroplet inside Silica Nanochannels

Incorporation of biological systems in water nanodroplets has recently emerged as a new frontier to investigate structural changes of biomolecules, with perspective applications in ultra-fast drug delivery. We report on the molecular dynamics of the digestive protein Pepsin subjected to a double confinement. The double confinement stemmed from embedding the protein inside a water nanodroplet, which in turn was caged in a nanochannel mimicking the mesoporous silica SBA-15. The nano-bio-droplet, whose size fits with the pore diameter, behaved differently depending on the protonation state of the pore surface silanols. Neutral channel sections allowed for the droplet to flow, while deprotonated sections acted as anchoring piers for the droplet. Inside the droplet, the protein, not directly bonded to the surface, showed a behavior similar to that reported for bulk water solutions, indicating that double confinement should not alter its catalytic activity. Our results suggest that nanobiodroplets, recently fabricated in volatile environments, can be encapsulated and stored in mesoporous silicas.

Electrospun CuO-ZnO nanohybrid: Tuning the nanostructure for improved amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide as a non-enzymatic sensor

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a by-product of some biochemical processes which is catalyzed by enzymes such as glucose oxidase (GOx), cholesterol oxidase (ChoOx), etc and its overproduction in living cells can trigger cancer growth and various diseases. Therefore, H₂O₂ sensing is of great importance in the determination of diseases as well as industries and environmental health plans. We produced ZnO-CuO nanofibers by electrospinning method for non-enzymatic electrochemical H₂O₂ sensing. The sensing properties of the carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with ZnO (0.3 wt%)/CuO (0.7 wt%) nanofibers (named as ZnO3-CuO7) for detection of H₂O₂ were explored in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at pH ∼ 7.4 solution. The ZnO3-CuO7 nanofiber exhibited the lowest charge transfer resistance and the highest electrocatalytic performance among other modified electrodes for detection of H₂O₂ and considered as an optimized sample. The effect of scan rate and H₂O₂ concentration in the reduction process were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the mechanism for the electrochemical reaction of H₂O₂ at the surface of the optimized electrode was studied. The diffusion coefficient of H₂O₂ and the catalytic rate constant were evaluated by chronoamperometry as 1.65 × 10^-5 cm² s^-1 and 6 × 10³ cm³ mol^-1 s^-1, respectively. Furthermore, amperometric detection of H₂O₂ with a low detection limit of 2.4 µM and a wide linear range of 3 to 530 µM were obtained. Meanwhile, the optimized electrode displayed no recognizable response towards some biomolecules such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, dopamine and glucose. The obtained results confirmed that the modified electrode shows high sensitivity and selectivity as a H₂O₂ biosensor with improved reproducibility and stability.
