Connect the Thermodynamics of Bulk and Confined Fluids: Confinement-Adsorption Scaling

Nanoscale thermodynamics needs the concept of a disjoining chemical potential

Disjoining pressure was discovered by Derjaguin in 1930's, which describes the difference between the pressure of a strongly confined fluid and the corresponding one in a bulk phase. It has been revealed recently that the disjoining pressure is at the origin of distinct differential and integral surface tensions for strongly confined fluids. Here we show how the twin concept, disjoining chemical potential, arises in a reminiscent way although it comes out eighty years later. This twin concept advances our understanding of nanoscale thermodynamics. Ensemble-dependence (or environment-dependence) is one hallmark of thermodynamics of small systems. We show that integral surface tension is ensemble-dependent while differential surface tension is not. Moreover, two generalized Gibbs-Duhem equations involving integral surface tensions are derived, as well as two additional adsorption equations relating surface tensions to adsorption-induced strains. All the results obtained in this work further evidence that an approach alternative of Hill's nanothermodynamics is possible, by extending Gibbs surface thermodynamics instead of resorting to Hill's replica trick. Moreover, we find a compression-expansion hysteresis without any underlying phase transition.

Structural and Dynamical Behaviour of Colloids with Competing Interactions Confined in Slit Pores

Systems with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions can form periodic modulated phases at low temperatures, such as cluster-crystal, hexagonal, lamellar and bicontinuous gyroid phases. These periodic microphases should be stable regardless of the physical origin of the interactions. However, they have not yet been experimentally observed in colloidal systems, where, in principle, the interactions can be tuned by modifying the colloidal solution. Our goal is to investigate whether the formation of some of these periodic microphases can be promoted by confinement in narrow slit pores. By performing simulations of a simple model with competing interactions, we find that both the cluster-crystal and lamellar phases can be stable up to higher temperatures than in the bulk system, whereas the hexagonal phase is destabilised at temperatures somewhat lower than in bulk. Besides, we observed that the internal ordering of the lamellar phase can be modified by changing the pore width. Interestingly, for sufficiently wide pores to host three lamellae, there is a range of temperatures for which the two lamellae close to the walls are internally ordered, whereas the one at the centre of the pore remains internally disordered. We also find that particle diffusion under confinement exhibits a complex dependence with the pore width and with the density, obtaining larger and smaller values of the diffusion coefficient than in the corresponding bulk system.

Thermodynamics of interfaces extended to nanoscales by introducing integral and differential surface tensions

As a system shrinks down in size, more and more molecules are found in its surface region, so surface contribution becomes a large or even a dominant part of its thermodynamic potentials. Surface tension is a venerable scientific concept; Gibbs defined it as the excess of grand potential of an inhomogeneous system with respect to its bulk value per interface area [J. W. Gibbs, "The Collected Works" in Thermodynamics (1928), Vol. 1]. The mechanical definition expresses it in terms of pressure tensor. So far, it has been believed the two definitions always give the same result. We show that the equivalence can break down for fluids confined in narrow pores. New concepts of integral and differential surface tensions, along with integral and differential adsorptions, need to be introduced for extending Gibbs thermodynamics of interfaces. We derived two generalized Gibbs adsorption equations. These concepts are indispensable for an adequate description of nanoscale systems. We also find a relation between integral surface tension and Derjaguin's disjoining pressure. This lays down the basis for measuring integral and differential surface tensions from disjoining pressure by using an atomic force microscope.

Confinement of Colloids with Competing Interactions in Ordered Porous Materials

In this work, we explore the possibility of promoting the formation of ordered microphases by confinement of colloids with competing interactions in ordered porous materials. For that aim, we consider three families of porous materials modeled as cubic primitive, diamond, and gyroid bicontinuous phases. The structure of the confined colloids is investigated by means of grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations in thermodynamic conditions at which either a cluster crystal or a cylindrical phase is stable in bulk. We find that by tuning the size of the unit cell of these porous materials, numerous novel ordered microphases can be produced, including cluster crystals arranged into close packed and open lattices as well as nonparallel cylindrical phases.

Enhancing Gas Solubility in Nanopores: A Combined Study Using Classical Density Functional Theory and Machine Learning

Geometrical confinement has a large impact on gas solubilities in nanoscale pores. This phenomenon is closely associated with heterogeneous catalysis, shale gas extraction, phase separation, etc. Whereas several experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted that provide meaningful insights into the over-solubility and under-solubility of different gases in confined solvents, the microscopic mechanism for regulating the gas solubility remains unclear. Here, we report a hybrid theoretical study for unraveling the regulation mechanism by combining classical density functional theory (CDFT) with machine learning (ML). Specifically, CDFT is employed to predict the solubility of argon in various solvents confined in nanopores of different types and pore widths, and these case studies then supply a valid training set to ML for further investigation. Finally, the dominant parameters that affect the gas solubility are identified, and a criterion is obtained to determine whether a confined gas-solvent system is enhance-beneficial or reduce-beneficial. Our findings provide theoretical guidance for predicting and regulating gas solubilities in nanopores. In addition, the hybrid method proposed in this work sets up a feasible platform for investigating complex interfacial systems with multiple controlling parameters.
