PG-PEI-Ag NPs-Decorated Membrane for Pretreatment of Laboratory Wastewater: Simultaneous Removal of Water-Insoluble Organic Solvents and Water-Soluble Anionic Organic Pollutants

Ce(IV)-coordinated organogel-based assay for on-site monitoring of propyl gallate with turn-on fluorescence signal

Propyl gallate (PG) is a commonly used synthetic phenolic antioxidant in foodstuffs and industrial products. Due to the potential health risk of PG, rapid and on-site detection in food and environment samples are important to guarantee human health. Herein, we demonstrated rapid monitoring of PG by a fluorescence turn-on strategy based on a specific fluorogenic reaction between PG and polyethyleneimine (PEI). Specifically, Ce4+ with oxidase-mimicking activity oxidized PG to its oxides, which then reacted with PEI through the Michael addition to generate the fluorescent compound. The proposed fluorogenic reaction had good specificity for PG, which could distinguish PG from other phenolic antioxidants and interferences. Furthermore, portable and low-cost organogel test kits were prepared using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate for quantitative and on-site detection of PG via a smartphone-based sensing platform. The organogel-based assay detection limit was 1.0 μg mL-1 with recoveries ranging from 80.2% to 106.2% in edible oils and surface water. Suitability of the developed assay was also validated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Our study provides an effective fluorescent approach to rapid, specific, and convenient monitoring of PG, which is useful for diminishing the risk of PG exposure.

Mussel-Inspired Ag NPs Immobilized on Melamine Sponge for Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol, Antibacterial Applications and Its Superhydrophobic Derivative for Oil-Water Separation

A functional material integrated with a variety of functions is highly desired in wastewater treatment. In this research, a mussel-inspired method of immobilizing silver nanoparticles on the skeleton of a melamine sponge is proposed and applied for water remediation. Ag NPs were reduced in situ and grown on a polydopamine-modified melamine sponge. The catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of the obtained MS-PDA-Ag was evaluated, and the results demonstrated that the MS-PDA-Ag presented high catalytic reduction activity. In addition, the monolithic MS-PDA-Ag presents excellent reusability with no remarkable decrease in catalytic efficiency after multiple reuses. Owing to the immobilized Ag NPs, the MS-PDA-Ag can also effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria against both gram-positive and gram-negative species, making it possible for bacteria elimination in polluted water. To further explore the possibility of utilizing the MS-PDA-Ag for versatile applications, a superhydrophobic derivative (S-MS-PDA-Ag) was prepared by coating a low-surface-energy substance (octadecanethiol) on the surface of MS-PDA-Ag. The obtained S-MS-PDA-Ag presents the capacities of oil/organics adsorption and water repellence, which can separate the insoluble oil/organics from water. The melamine sponge immobilized with Ag NPs demonstrates prominent catalytic reduction of 4-NP, antibacterial activity and the superhydrophobic derivative presents the capacity of insoluble oil/organics separation from oil-water mixtures, exhibiting high potential in the remediation of polluted water.

Fabrication of a Nanoporous Silica Hydrogel by Cross-Linking of SiO2-H3BO3-Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane for Excellent Adsorption of Azo Dyes from Wastewater

This study reports a novel cross-linking approach to fabricate the hydrothermally neutralized silica hydrogel of SiO₂-H₃BO₃-hexadecyltrimethoxysilane by grafting alkylsilane groups onto the nanoporous silica. The synthesized silica hydrogel possessed a large specific surface area of 51.3 m²g^-1 and showed excellent dye adsorption capability of cationic dyes in neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH 9) medium from wastewater. The colloidal electrokinetic potential analysis revealed that the outstanding adsorption efficiency of cationic dyes over anionic dyes strongly relies on the surface charge of the hydrogels. Moreover, the hydrophobic interactions between the dye molecules and the hydrogels were studied, and it was found that the dye adsorption performance can be tuned by altering the concentration of hydrophobic reagents of the hydrogel. The dye adsorption mechanism was established, and the kinetic study suggested that the adsorption is a pseudo-second-order reaction. Adsorption isotherms at various equilibrium conditions fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm. Therefore, this strongly supports the promising and practical application of the prepared silica hydrogel. The recyclability of the hydrogel was studied, and it showed 90% adsorption efficiency by the regenerated gel up to 6 cycles, which has a high potential in wastewater treatment.
