Effects of Asymmetric Molecular Architecture on Chain Stretching and Dynamics in Miktoarm Star Copolymers

Fast and Scalable Synthetic Route to Densely Grafted, Branched Polystyrenes and Polydienes via Anionic Polymerization Utilizing P2VP as Branching Point

Defined, branched polymer architectures with low dispersity and architectural purity are of great interest to polymer science but are challenging to synthesize. Besides star and comb, especially the pom-pom topology is of interest as it is the simplest topology with exactly two branching points. Most synthetic approaches to a pom-pom topology reported a lack of full control and variability over one of the three topological parameters, the backbone or arm molecular weight and arm number. A new, elegant, fast, and scalable synthetic route without the need for post-polymerization modification (PPM) or purification steps during the synthesis to a pom-pom and a broad variety of topologies made from styrene and dienes is reported, with potential application to barbwire, bottlebrush, miktoarm star, Janus type polymers, or multi-graft copolymers. The key is to inset short poly(2-vinyl-pyridine) blocks (<2 mol% in the branched product) into the backbone as branching points. Carb anions can react at the C6 carbon of the pyridine ring, grafting the arms onto the backbone. Since the synthetic route to polystyrene pom-poms has only two steps and is free of PPM or purification, large amounts of up to 300 g of defined pom-pom structures can be synthesized in one batch.

Non-equilibrium Effects of Polymer Dynamics under Nanometer Confinement: Effects of Architecture and Molar Mass

The non-equilibrium dynamics of linear and star-shaped cis-1,4 polyisoprenes confined within nanoporous alumina is explored as a function of pore size, d, molar mass, and functionality (f = 2, 6, and 64). Two thermal protocols are tested: one resembling a quasi-static process (I) and another involving fast cooling followed by annealing (II). Although both protocols give identical equilibrium times, it is through protocol I that it is easier to extract the equilibrium times, t_eq, by the linear relationships of the characteristic peak frequencies with time and rate, respectively, as log(f_max) = C₁ - k log(t) and log(f_max) = C₂ + λ log(β). Both thermal protocols establish the existence of a critical temperature (at T_c, where k → 0 and λ → 0) below which non-equilibrium effects set-in. The critical temperature depends on the degree of confinement, 2R_g/d, and on molecular architecture. Strikingly, establishing equilibrium dynamics at all temperatures above the bulk, T_g, requires 2R_g/d ∼ 0.02, i.e., pore diameters that are much larger than the chain dimensions. This reflects non-equilibrium configurations of the adsorbed layer that extent away from the pore walls. The equilibrium times depend strongly on temperature, pore size, and functionality. In general, star-shaped polymers require longer times to reach equilibrium because of the higher tendency for adsorption. Both thermal protocols produced an increasing dielectric strength for the segmental and chain modes. The increase was beyond any densification, suggesting enhanced orientation correlations of subchain dipoles.

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study of the Structural Relaxation of Elongationally Oriented, Moderately Stretched Three-Arm Star Polymers

We present structural relaxation studies of a polystyrene star polymer after cessation of high-rate extensional flow. During the steady-state flow, the scattering pattern shows two sets of independent correlations peaks, reflecting the structure of a polymer confined in a fully oriented three-armed tube. Upon cessation of flow, the relaxation constitutes three distinct regimes. In a first regime, the perpendicular correlation peaks disappear, signifying disruption of the virtual tube. In a second regime, broad scattering arcs emerge, reflecting relaxation from highly aligned chains to more relaxed, still anisotropic form. New entanglements dominate the last relaxation regime where the scattering pattern evolves to a successively elliptical and circular pattern, reflecting relaxation via reptation.
