Understanding Gas Transport in Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Assemblies

Controlled node growth on the surface of polymersomes

Incorporating nucleobases into synthetic polymers has proven to be a versatile method for controlling self-assembly. The formation of strong directional hydrogen bonds between complementary nucleobases provides a driving force that permits access to complex particle morphologies. Here, nucleobase pairing was used to direct the formation and lengthening of nodes on the outer surface of vesicles formed from polymers (polymersomes) functionalised with adenine in their membrane-forming domains. Insertion of a self-assembling short diblock copolymer containing thymine into the polymersome membranes caused an increase in steric crowding at the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface, which was relieved by initial node formation and subsequent growth. Nano-objects were imaged by (cryo-)TEM, which permitted quantification of node coverage and length. The ability to control node growth on the surface of polymersomes provides a new platform to develop higher-order nanomaterials with tailorable properties.

Vesicular self-assembly of copolymer-grafted nanoparticles with anisotropic shapes

Plasmonic nanovesicles show broad applications in areas such as cancer theranostics and drug delivery, but the preparation of nanovesicles from shaped nanoparticles remains challenging. This article describes the vesicular self-assembly of shaped nanoparticles, such as gold nanocubes grafted with amphiphilic block copolymers, in selective solvents. The nanocubes assembled within the vesicular membranes exhibit two distinctive packing modes, namely square-like and hexagonal packing, depending on the relative dimensions of the copolymer ligands and nanocubes. The corresponding optical properties of the plasmonic nanovesicles can be tuned by varying the length of the grafted copolymers and the size of the nanocubes. This work provides guidance for the fabrication of functional plasmonic vesicles for applications in catalysis, nanomedicines and optical devices.

Local Structure of Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Melts

Polymer-grafted nanoparticle (GNP) membranes show unexpected gas transport enhancements relative to the neat polymer, with a maximum as a function of graft molecular weight (MW_g ≈ 100 kDa) for sufficiently high grafting densities. The structural origins of this behavior are unclear. Simulations suggest that polymer segments are stretched near the nanoparticle (NP) surface and form a dry layer, while more distal chain fragments are in their undeformed Gaussian states and interpenetrate with segments from neighboring NPs. This theoretical basis is derived by considering the behavior of two adjacent NPs; how this behavior is modified by multi-NP effects relevant to gas separation membranes is unexplored. Here, we measure and interpret SAXS data for poly(methyl acrylate)-grafted silica NPs and find that for very low MW_gs, contact between GNPs obeys the two-NP theory─namely that the NPs act like hard spheres, with radii that are linear combinations of the NP core sizes and the dry zone dimensions; thus, the interpenetration zones relax into the interstitial spaces. For chains with MW_g > 100 kDa, the interpenetration zones are in the contact regions between two NPs. These results suggest that for MW_gs below the transition, gas primarily moves through a series of dry zones with favorable transport, with the interpenetration zone with less favorable transport properties in parallel. For higher MW_gs, the dry and interpenetration zones are in series, resulting in a decrease in transport enhancement. The MW_g at the transport maximum then corresponds to the chain length with the largest, unfavorable stretching free energy.
