Multicyclic Polymer Synthesis through Controlled/Living Cyclopolymerization of α,ω-Dinorbornenyl-Functionalized Macromonomers

Efficient Synthesis of Cyclic Poly(ethylene glycol)s under High Concentration Conditions by the Assistance of Pseudopolyrotaxane with Cyclodextrin Derivatives

An efficient synthesis of cyclic polymers (CPs) is in high demand due to their unique properties. However, polymer cyclization generally occurs at low concentrations (0.1 g/L), and the synthesis of CPs at high concentrations remains a challenge. Herein an efficient cyclization of poly(ethylene glycol) (Mn = 2000 g/mol, 4000 g/mol) (PEG-2k, PEG-4k) in high concentration (80 g/L) is realized by the assistance of pseudopolyrotaxane (pPRx). Water-soluble pPRx with a U-like-shape inclusion motif is prepared by mixing the 2-hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) and PEG with (E)-3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamate (TCA-PEG-2k, TCA-PEG-4k). Subsequent irradiation of the pPRx solution (10-80 g/L) by UV light gives cyclic polymers through the intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of the cinnamoyl moieties. The photoreaction of TCA-PEG-2k in the pPRx system gives cyclic monomers (C-1mer) as major products with a yield of 66% at 80 g/L. Additionally, the cyclization of TCA-PEG-4k also gives C-1mer as major products with a yield of 45% at a concentration of 80 g/L.

Rotaxane Formation of Multicyclic Polydimethylsiloxane in a Silicone Network: A Step toward Constructing "Macro-Rotaxanes" from High-Molecular-Weight Axle and Wheel Components

Rotaxanes consisting of a high-molecular-weight axle and wheel components (macro-rotaxanes) have high structural freedom, and are attractive for soft-material applications. However, their synthesis remains underexplored. Here, we investigated macro-rotaxane formation by the topological trapping of multicyclic polydimethylsiloxanes (mc-PDMSs) in silicone networks. mc-PDMS with different numbers of cyclic units and ring sizes was synthesized by cyclopolymerization of a α,ω-norbornenyl-functionalized PDMS. Silicone networks were prepared in the presence of 10-60 wt % mc-PDMS, and the trapping efficiency of mc-PDMS was determined. In contrast to monocyclic PDMS, mc-PDMSs with more cyclic units and larger ring sizes can be quantitatively trapped in the network as macro-rotaxanes. The damping performance of a 60 wt % mc-PDMS-blended silicone network was evaluated, revealing a higher tan δ value than the bare PDMS network. Thus, macro-rotaxanes are promising as non-leaching additives for network polymers.

Highly Ordered Nanoscale Film Morphologies of Block Copolymers Governed by Nonlinear Topologies

Among many properties of cyclic block copolymers, the notable domain spacing (d-spacing) reduction offers nonlinear topology as an effective tool for developing block copolymers for nanolithography. However, the current consensus regarding the topology-morphology correlation is ambiguous and in need of more studies. Here we present the morphological investigation on nanoscale films of cyclic and tadpole-shaped poly(n-decyl glycidyl ether-block-2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl glycidyl ether)s and their linear counterpart via synchrotron grazing-incidence X-ray scattering. All copolymers form phase-separated nanostructures, in which only the nonlinear copolymers form highly ordered and unidirectional nanostructures. Additionally, d-spacings of cyclic and tadpole-shaped block copolymers are 49.3-53.7% and 25.0-32.5% shorter than that of their linear counterpart, respectively, exhibiting greater or comparable d-spacing reductions against the experimentally and theoretically achieved values from the literature. Overall, this study demonstrates that cyclic and tadpole topologies can be utilized in developing materials with miniaturized dimensions, high structural ordering, and unidirectional orientation for various nanotechnology applications.

Cation Template-Assisted RAFT Cyclopolymerization of Hexa(Ethylene Glycol) Di(meth)acrylates to Thermoresponsive Pseudo-Crown Ether Polymers

Cation template-assisted reversible addition fragmentation/chain transfer (RAFT) cyclopolymerization of hexa(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG6DA) or hexa(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG6DMA) is developed as a versatile system to produce large in-chain ring cyclopolymers, thermoresponsive pseudo-crown ether polymers. For an efficient synthesis, potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF₆ ) is employed as a cation template; PEG6DA as well as PEG6DMA recognizes the potassium cation with the hexa(ethylene glycol) spacer to dynamically form a pseudo-cyclic divinyl monomer. Those monomers interacting with the potassium cations are efficiently polymerized with RAFT agents and radical initiators into cyclopolymers comprising 24-membered hexa(ethylene glycol) rings. The cation template-assisted RAFT cyclopolymerization is also effective for the synthesis of amphiphilic random cyclocopolymers bearing hydrophilic hexa(ethylene glycol) rings and hydrophobic butyl groups. Cyclopolymers of PEG6DA and PEG6DMA further show thermoresponsive solubility in water. The cloud point temperature of cyclopoly(PEG6DA)s is higher than that of a cyclopoly(PEG6DMA).

Remarkable untangled dynamics behavior of multicyclic branched polystyrenes

A typical multicyclic branched-topology polystyrene (c-BPS) with high molecular weight (30 K ≤ Mw MALLS ≤ 300 K g mol-1) and narrow dispersity (1.2 ≤ Đ ≤ 1.3) was efficiently synthesized by combining atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) techniques. The topological constraints imposed by the presence of cyclic units and branch points had a marked influence on the entanglement behaviors of the polymer chains in solution. Therefore, c-BPS possesses the lowest loss modulus (G'') and viscosity (η), the highest diffusion coefficient (D0), the largest mesh size (ξ) and the fastest terminal relaxation (TR), compared with branched and linear precursors.

Rhodanine-based Knoevenagel reaction and ring-opening polymerization for efficiently constructing multicyclic polymers

Cyclic polymers have a number of unique physical properties compared with those of their linear counterparts. However, the methods for the synthesis of cyclic polymers are very limited, and some multicyclic polymers are still not accessible now. Here, we found that the five-membered cyclic structure and electron withdrawing groups make methylene in rhodanine highly active to aldehyde via highly efficient Knoevenagel reaction. Also, rhodanine can act as an initiator for anionic ring-opening polymerization of thiirane to produce cyclic polythioethers. Therefore, rhodanine can serve as both an initiator for ring-opening polymerization and a monomer in Knoevenagel polymerization. Via rhodanine-based Knoevenagel reaction, we can easily incorporate rhodanine moieties in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, and correspondingly could produce cyclic structures in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, via rhodanine-based anionic ring-opening polymerization. This rhodanine chemistry would provide easy access to a wide variety of complex multicyclic polymers.

Syntheses, crystal structures and Hirshfeld surface analyses of (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-(perfluoro-pyridin-4-yl)-3a,4,7,7a-tetra-hydro-4,7-methano-iso-indole-1,3-dione and (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-[(perfluoro-pyridin-4-yl)-oxy]-3a,4,7,7a-tetra-hydro-4,7-methano-iso-indole-1,3-dione

In each of the title compounds, the packing is driven by C—H⋯F inter­tactions, along with a variety of C—H⋯O, C—O⋯π, and C—F⋯π contacts. Hirshfeld surface analyses were conducted to aid in the visualization of these various influences on the packing.

The syntheses and crystal structures of the title compounds, C₁₄H₈F₄N₂O₂ and C₁₄H₈F₄N₂O₃, are reported. In each crystal, the packing is driven by C—H⋯F inter­tactions, along with a variety of C—H⋯O, C—O⋯π, and C—F⋯π contacts. Hirshfeld surface analysis was conducted to aid in the visualization of these various influences on the packing: they showed that the largest contributions to the surface contacts arise from H⋯F/F⋯H inter­actions, followed by H⋯H and O⋯H/H⋯O.

A versatile synthetic strategy for macromolecular cages: intramolecular consecutive cyclization of star-shaped polymers

Cage-shaped polymers, or "macromolecular cages", are of great interest as the macromolecular analogues of molecular cages because of their various potential applications in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. However, the systematic synthesis of macromolecular cages remains a great challenge. Herein, we describe a robust and versatile synthetic strategy for macromolecular cages with defined arm numbers and sizes based on the intramolecular consecutive cyclization of highly reactive norbornene groups attached to each end of the arms of a star-shaped polymer precursor. The cyclizations of three-, four-, six-, and eight-armed star-shaped poly(ε-caprolactone)s (PCLs) bearing a norbornenyl group at each arm terminus were effected with Grubbs' third generation catalyst at high dilution. 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF MS analyses revealed that the reaction proceeded to produce the desired macromolecular cages with sufficient purity. The molecular sizes of the macromolecular cages were controlled by simply changing the molecular weight of the star-shaped polymer precursors. Systematic investigation of the structure-property relationships confirmed that the macromolecular cages adopt a much more compact conformation, in both the solution and bulk states, as compared to their linear and star-shaped counterparts. This synthetic approach marks a significant advance in the synthesis of complex macromolecular architectures and provides a platform for novel applications using cage-shaped molecules with polymer frameworks.
