Facet Engineering for Amplified Spontaneous Emission in Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Superfluorescence from Electron-Hole Plasma at Moderate Temperatures of 175 K

Superfluorescence, a cooperative coherent spontaneous emission, is of great importance to the understanding of many-body correlation in optical processes. Even though superfluorescence has been demonstrated in many diverse systems, it is hard to observe in electron-hole plasma (EHP) due to its rapid dephasing and hence needs strong magnetic fields or complex microcavities. Herein, we report the first experimental observation of superfluorescence from EHP up to a moderate temperature of 175 K without external stimuli in a coupled metal halide perovskite quantum dots film. The EHP exhibits macroscopic quantum coherence through spontaneous synchronization. The coherence of the excited state decays by superfluorescence, which is redshifted 40 meV from the spontaneous emission with a ∼1700 times faster decay rate and exhibits quadratic fluence dependence. Notably, the excited state population's delayed growth and abrupt decay, which are strongly influenced by the pump fluence and the Burnham-Chiao ringing, are the characteristics of the superfluorescence. Our findings will open up a new frontier for cooperative emission and light beam-based technologies.

Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystal Lasers and Laser Diodes

Lasers and optical amplifiers based on solution-processable materials have been long-desired devices for their compatibility with virtually any substrate, scalability, and ease of integration with on-chip photonics and electronics. These devices have been pursued across a wide range of materials including polymers, small molecules, perovskites, and chemically prepared colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, also commonly referred to as colloidal quantum dots. The latter materials are especially attractive for implementing optical-gain media as in addition to being compatible with inexpensive and easily scalable chemical techniques, they offer multiple advantages derived from a zero-dimensional character of their electronic states. These include a size-tunable emission wavelength, low optical gain thresholds, and weak sensitivity of lasing characteristics to variations in temperature. Here we review the status of colloidal nanocrystal lasing devices, most recent advances in this field, outstanding challenges, and the ongoing progress toward technological viable devices including colloidal quantum dot laser diodes.

Dodecahedron CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals Enable Facile Harvesting of Hot Electrons and Holes

This Letter reports the facile harvesting of hot carriers (HCs) in a composite of 12-faceted dodecahedron CsPbBr₃ nanocrystal (NC) and a scavenger molecule. We recorded ∼3.3 × 10¹¹ s^-1 HC cooling rate in NC when excited with ∼1.4 times the band gap energy (E_g), increasing to >3 × 10¹² s^-1 in the presence of scavengers at high concentration due to the HC extractions. Since the observed intrinsic charge transfer rate (∼1.7 × 10¹² s^-1) in our NC-scavenger complex is about an order of magnitude higher than the HC cooling rate (∼3.3 × 10¹¹ s^-1), carriers are harvested before their cooling. Further, a fluorescence correlation spectroscopy study reveals NC tends to form a quasi-stable complex with a scavenger molecule, ensuring charge transfer completed (τ_ct ≈ 0.6 ps) much before the complex breaks apart (>600 μs). The overall results of our study highlight the promise shown by 12-faceted NCs and their implications in modern applications, including hot carrier solar cells.

Simultaneous Photoluminescence and Photothermal Investigation of Individual CH3NH3PbBr3 Microcrystals

The photoluminescence (PL) of CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (MAPbBr₃), from thin films to nanoparticles, has been widely studied, providing information about charge carrier dynamics. However, the other energy dissipative channel, nonradiative relaxation, has not been thoroughly investigated due to a lack of proper technology. In this work, we simultaneously investigated the PL and photothermal (PT) properties of single MAPbBr₃ microcrystals (MCs) by a home-built PL and PT microscope. In addition to the direct observation of the heterogeneity of the PL and PT images and kinetics of different MCs, we demonstrated the variation in the absorption of single MAPbBr₃ MCs, which was believed to be constant. We also proved that more absorbed energy dissipated from the nonradiative channel at higher heating power. These results show that PL and PT microscopy is an effective and convenient method to investigate the charge carrier behaviors of optoelectronic materials at the single particle level for a deep understanding of their photophysical processes.

Facet Engineering for Decelerated Carrier Cooling in Polyhedral Perovskite Nanocrystals

We report here the hot carrier (HC) cooling time scales within polyhedral CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs) characterized by different numbers of facets (6 to 26) utilizing a femtosecond upconversion setup. Interestingly, the observed cooling time scale slows many-fold (>10 times) upon opening the new facets on the NC surface. Furthermore, a temperature-dependent study reveals that cooling in multifaceted NCs is polaron mediated, where newly opened polar facets and the soft lattice of CsPbBr₃ NCs play pivotal roles. Our hallmark result of slow cooling in polyhedral NCs renders an excellent opportunity for harvesting high-energy carriers by a carefully chosen molecular system. To this end, employing the hole scavenger molecule aniline, we successfully extracted hot holes from optically pumped NCs. We believe that several intriguing properties of the polyhedral NCs, including rapid polaron formation, defect-tolerant nature, and the capability of soft lattice to support slow diffusion of charge carriers, resulted in decelerated cooling.
