Two-Dimensional Covalent Crystals by Chemical Conversion of Thin van der Waals Materials

In Situ Assembly of Well-Defined MoS2 Slabs on Shape-Tailored Anatase TiO2 Nanostructures: Heterojunctions Role in Phenol Photodegradation

MoS2/TiO2-based nanostructures have attracted extensive attention due to their high performance in many fields, including photocatalysis. In this contribution, MoS2 nanostructures were prepared via an in situ bottom-up approach at the surface of shape-controlled TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 nanosheets and bipyramids). Furthermore, a multi-technique approach by combining electron microscopy and spectroscopic methods was employed. More in detail, the morphology/structure and vibrational/optical properties of MoS2 slabs on TiO2 anatase bipyramidal nanoparticles, mainly exposing {101} facets, and on TiO2 anatase nanosheets exposing both {001} and {101} facets, still covered by MoS2, were compared. It was shown that unlike other widely used methods, the bottom-up approach enabled the atomic-level growth of well-defined MoS2 slabs on TiO2 nanostructures, thus aiming to achieve the most effective chemical interactions. In this regard, two kinds of synergistic heterojunctions, namely, crystal face heterojunctions between anatase TiO2 coexposed {101} and {001} facets and semiconductor heterojunctions between MoS2 and anatase TiO2 nanostructures, were considered to play a role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity, together with a proper ratio of (101), (001) coexposed surfaces.

Morphotaxy of Layered van der Waals Materials

Layered van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted significant attention due to their materials properties that can enhance diverse applications including next-generation computing, biomedical devices, and energy conversion and storage technologies. This class of materials is typically studied in the two-dimensional (2D) limit by growing them directly on bulk substrates or exfoliating them from parent layered crystals to obtain single or few layers that preserve the original bonding. However, these vdW materials can also function as a platform for obtaining additional phases of matter at the nanoscale. Here, we introduce and review a synthesis paradigm, morphotaxy, where low-dimensional materials are realized by using the shape of an initial nanoscale precursor to template growth or chemical conversion. Using morphotaxy, diverse non-vdW materials such as HfO₂ or InF₃ can be synthesized in ultrathin form by changing the composition but preserving the shape of the original 2D layered material. Morphotaxy can also enable diverse atomically precise heterojunctions and other exotic structures such as Janus materials. Using this morphotaxial approach, the family of low-dimensional materials can be substantially expanded, thus creating vast possibilities for future fundamental studies and applied technologies.

Interface-dependent phononic and optical properties of GeO/MoSO heterostructures

The interface-dependent electronic, vibrational, piezoelectric, and optical properties of van der Waals heterobilayers, formed by buckled GeO (b-GeO) and Janus MoSO structures, are investigated by means of first-principles calculations. The electronic band dispersions show that O/Ge and S/O interface formations result in a type-II band alignment with direct and indirect band gaps, respectively. In contrast, O/O and S/Ge interfaces give rise to the formation of a type-I band alignment with an indirect band gap. By considering the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) on top of G₀W₀ approximation, it is shown that different interfaces can be distinguished from each other by means of the optical absorption spectra as a consequence of the band alignments. Additionally, the low- and high-frequency regimes of the Raman spectra are also different for each interface type. The alignment of the individual dipoles, which is interface-dependent, either weakens or strengthens the net dipole of the heterobilayers and results in tunable piezoelectric coefficients. The results indicate that the possible heterobilayers of b-GeO/MoSO asymmetric structures possess various electronic, optical, and piezoelectric properties arising from the different interface formations and can be distinguished by means of various spectroscopic techniques.

Vibrational and optical identification of GeO2 and GeO single layers: a first-principles study

In the present work, the identification of two hexagonal phases of germanium oxides (namely GeO₂ and GeO) through the vibrational and optical properties is reported using density functional theory calculations. While structural optimizations show that single-layer GeO₂ and GeO crystallize in 1T and buckled phases, phonon band dispersions reveal the dynamical stability of each structure. First-order off-resonant Raman spectral predictions demonstrate that each free-standing single-layer possesses characteristic peaks that are representative for the identification of the germanium oxide phase. On the other hand, electronic band dispersion analysis shows the insulating and large-gap semiconducting nature of single-layer GeO₂ and GeO, respectively. Moreover, optical absorption, reflectance, and transmittance spectra obtained by means of G₀W₀-BSE calculations reveal the existence of tightly bound excitons in each phase, displaying strong optical absorption. Furthermore, the excitonic gaps are found to be at deep UV and visible portions of the spectrum, for GeO₂ and GeO crystals, with energies of 6.24 and 3.10 eV, respectively. In addition, at the prominent excitonic resonances, single-layers display high reflectivity with a zero transmittance, which is another indication of the strong light-matter interaction inside the crystal medium.

Ultra-thin structures of manganese fluorides: conversion from manganese dichalcogenides by fluorination

In this study, it is predicted by density functional theory calculations that graphene-like novel ultra-thin phases of manganese fluoride crystals, that have nonlayered structures in their bulk form, can be stabilized by fluorination of manganese dichalcogenide crystals. First, it is shown that substitution of fluorine atoms with chalcogens in the manganese dichalcogenide host lattice is favorable. Among possible crystal formations, three stable ultra-thin structures of manganese fluoride, 1H-MnF2, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3, are found to be stable by total energy optimization calculations. In addition, phonon calculations and Raman activity analysis reveal that predicted novel single-layers are dynamically stable crystal structures displaying distinctive characteristic peaks in their vibrational spectrum enabling experimental determination of the corresponding phases. Differing from 1H-MnF2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) large gap semiconductor, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3 single-layers are semiconductors with ferromagnetic (FM) ground state.

Raman and optical characteristics of van der Waals heterostructures of single layers of GaP and GaSe: a first-principles study

Inorganic single layers of GaP and GaSe can form novel ultra-thin heterostructures displaying unique Raman and optical properties.

Few-Layered MoS2 Nanoparticles Covering Anatase TiO2 Nanosheets: Comparison between Ex Situ and In Situ Synthesis Approaches

MoS2/TiO2 nanostructures made of MoS2 nanoparticles covering TiO2 nanosheets have been synthesized, either via ex situ or in situ approaches. The morphology and structure of the MoS2/TiO2 hybrid nanostructures have been investigated and imaged by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), while the vibrational and optical properties have been investigated by Raman, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and UV−visible (UV–vis) spectroscopies. Different stacking levels and MoS2 nanosheets distribution on TiO2 nanosheets have been carefully evaluated from HRTEM images. Surface sites on the main exposed faces of both materials have been established by means of in situ FTIR spectra of CO probe molecule adsorption. The results of the ex situ and in situ approaches are compared to underline the role of the synthesis processes affecting the morphology and structure of MoS2 nanosheets, such as curvature, surface defects, and stacking order. It will be shown that as a result of the in situ approach, the reactivity of the TiO2 nanosheets and hence, in turn, the MoS2–TiO2 nanosheets interaction are modified.

Interlayer Bonding in Two-Dimensional Materials: The Special Case of SnP3 and GeP3

Stacked two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures are evolving as the "next-generation" optoelectronic materials because of the possibility of designing atomically thin devices with outstanding characteristics. However, most of the existing 2D heterostructures are governed by weak van der Waals interlayer interactions that, as often is the case, exert limited impact on the resulting properties of heterostructures relative to their constituting components. In this work, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of a novel class of 2D MP₃ (M = Ge and Sn) materials featuring strong interlayer interactions, applying a robust theoretical framework combining density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory. We demonstrate that the remarkable intrinsic vertical strain (of ∼40% relative to the monolayers) promotes the exfoliation of these materials into bilayers and profoundly impacts their electronic structure, charge transport, and optical properties. Most strikingly, we observe that the strong interlayer hybridization indicates continuous optical absorption across the entire visible range that, together with high charge carrier mobility, makes these 2D MP₃ heterostructures attractive for photoconversion applications.

Flexible N doped carbon/bubble-like MoS2 core/sheath framework: Buffering volume expansion for potassium ion batteries

Suitable anode materials for potassium ion batteries (KIBs) with high capacity, good reversibility and stable cycling performances are still in large demand. Here, flexible N doped carbon/bubble-like MoS₂ core/sheath framework (MoS₂/NCS) is prepared as an anode material for potassium ion batteries. The N doped carbon sponge (NCS) skeleton with good conductivity and high surface area guarantees superior rate capability and high stability of MoS₂/NCS anode. The chemical bonds (CMo) firmly bridge MoS₂ and NCS together, which further ensures MoS₂/NCS stable cycling performance. More importantly, volume expansion is greatly buffered during cycling by this unique structure: the voids between bubble-like MoS₂ sheath and NCS core can effectively buffer volume expansion generated during potassium intercalation/deintercalation; the enlarged interlayer spacing contribute more space to buffer volume change; the ultrathin nanosheets can shorten the charge diffusion distance and buffer volume change. As a consequence, MoS₂/NCS delivers a capacity of 374 mAh g^-1 over 200 cycles at 50 mA g^-1. Even at 1000 mA g^-1, a capacity of 212 mAh g^-1 can still be obtained over 1000 cycles. We believe this MoS₂/NCS structure will highlight the potential of MoS₂ in practical KIBs applications.

Interlayer engineering of MoS2 nanosheets for high-rate potassium-ion storage

Se–MoS₂ with expanded the interlayer spacing and more active sites, exhibits better rate performance (75% capacity retention) as potassium ion batteries anode.

Tunable electronic properties of the dynamically stable layered mineral Pt2HgSe3 (Jacutingaite)

Density functional theory calculations are performed in order to study the structural and electronic properties of monolayer Pt₂HgSe₃. Effects of uniaxial and biaxial strain, layer thickness, electric field and out-of-plane pressure on the electronic properties are systematically investigated.
