Deterministic Deposition of Nanoparticles with Sub-10 nm Resolution

Gate Electrodes Enable Tunable Nanofluidic Particle Traps

The ability to control the location of nanoscale objects in liquids is essential for fundamental and applied research from nanofluidics to molecular biology. To overcome their random Brownian motion, the electrostatic fluid trap creates local minima in potential energy by shaping electrostatic interactions with a tailored wall topography. However, this strategy is inherently static; once fabricated, the potential wells cannot be modulated. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that such a trap can be controlled through a buried gate electrode. We measure changes in the average escape times of nanoparticles from the traps to quantify the induced modulations of 0.7 kBT in potential energy and 50 mV in surface potential. Finally, we summarize the mechanism in a parameter-free predictive model, including surface chemistry and electrostatic fringing, that reproduces the experimental results. Our findings open a route toward real-time controllable nanoparticle traps.

Luminescence Thermometry Beyond the Biological Realm

As the field of luminescence thermometry has matured, practical applications of luminescence thermometry techniques have grown in both frequency and scope. Due to the biocompatibility of most luminescent thermometers, many of these applications fall within the realm of biology. However, luminescence thermometry is increasingly employed beyond the biological realm, with expanding applications in areas such as thermal characterization of microelectronics, catalysis, and plasmonics. Here, we review the motivations, methodologies, and advances linked to nonbiological applications of luminescence thermometry. We begin with a brief overview of luminescence thermometry probes and techniques, focusing on those most commonly used for nonbiological applications. We then address measurement capabilities that are particularly relevant for these applications and provide a detailed survey of results across various application categories. Throughout the review, we highlight measurement challenges and requirements that are distinct from those of biological applications. Finally, we discuss emerging areas and future directions that present opportunities for continued research.

Particle Network Self-Assembly of Similar Size Sub-Micron Calcium Alginate and Polystyrene Particles Atop Glass

Particle-mediated self-assembly, such as nanocomposites, microstructure formation in materials, and core-shell coating of biological particles, offers precise control over the properties of biological materials for applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensing. The assembly of similar-sized calcium alginate (CAG) and polystyrene sub-micron particles is studied in an aqueous sodium nitrate solution as a model for particle-mediated self-assembly of biological and synthetic mixed particle species. The objective is to reinforce biological matrices by incorporating synthetic particles to form hybrid particulate networks with tailored properties. By varying the ionic strength of the suspension, the authors alter the energy barriers for particle attachment to each other and to a glass substrate that result from colloidal surface forces. The particles do not show monotonic adsorption trend to glass with ionic strength. Hence, apart from DLVO theory-van der Waals and electrostatic interactions-the authors further consider solvation and bridging interactions in the analysis of the particulate adsorption-coagulation system. CAG particles, which support lower energy barriers to attachment relative to their counterpart polystyrene particles, accumulate as dense aggregates on the glass substrate. Polystyrene particles adsorb simultaneously as detached particles. At high electrolyte concentrations, where electrostatic repulsion is largely screened, the mixture of particles covers most of the glass substrate; the CAG particles form a continuous network throughout the glass substrate with pockets of polystyrene particles. The particulate structure is correlated with the adjustable energy barriers for particle attachment in the suspension.

Nanoparticle contact printing with interfacial engineering for deterministic integration into functional structures

Deterministic, pristine, and scalable integration of individual nanoparticles onto arbitrary surfaces is an ongoing challenge, yet essential for harnessing their unique properties for functional nanoscale devices. To address this challenge, we present a versatile technique where spatially arranged nanoparticles assembled in a topographical template are printed onto diverse surfaces, through a single contact-and-release step, with >95% transfer yield and <50-nanometer placement accuracy. Through engineering of interfacial interactions, our approach uniquely promotes high-yield transfer of individual particles without needing solvents, surface treatments, and polymer sacrificial layers, which are conventionally inevitable. By avoiding these mediation steps, surfaces can remain damage and contamination free and accessible to integrate into functional structures. We demonstrate this in a particle-on-mirror model system, where >2000 precisely defined nanocavities display a consistent plasmonic response with minimized interstructure variability. Through fabricating arrays of emitter-coupled nanocavities, we further highlight the integration opportunities offered by our contact printing.

Template-Assisted Self-Assembly of Fluorescent Nanodiamonds for Scalable Quantum Technologies

Milled nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are nanoscale quantum sensors that form colloidal dispersions. However, variations in their size, shape, and surface chemistry limit the ability to position individual nanodiamonds and statistically study properties that affect their optical and quantum characteristics. Here, we present a scalable strategy to form ordered arrays of nanodiamonds using capillary-driven, template-assisted self-assembly. We demonstrate the precise spatial arrangement of isolated nanodiamonds with diameters below 50 nm across millimeter-scale areas. Measurements of over 200 assembled nanodiamonds yield a statistical understanding of their structural, optical, and quantum properties. The NV centers' spin and charge properties are uncorrelated with nanodiamond size but rather are consistent with heterogeneity in their nanoscale environment.

Programmed Assembly of DNA Templates by Silver Nanowires

DNA origami templates are known to exhibit many advantages to integrate functional components at desirable locations for nanoelectronic applications. In order to immobilize conducting or semiconducting species in a bottom-up approach, the programmed assembly of DNA templates is of utmost necessity. This report demonstrates the silver nanowires enabled bridging of two linear DNA origami (DO) nanostructures by utilizing the host-guest interaction of biotin-STV and sequence-specific silver metallization of poly(dG-dC) DNA nanowires (in 10 % yield) using (dA)₁₀ coated AgNPs (15 nm). The enzymatic synthesis of 750 bp, 1500 bp and 3000 bp bis-biotinylated poly(dG-dC), facile synthesis of 1 : 1 biotin-STV and silver-nanowire bridged DNA templates were characterized by gel electrophoresis, atomic force microscope imaging techniques. The strategy utilized here provides a method that can precisely connect heterogeneous templates towards bottom-up fabrication of practical nanoelectronics.

Thermal scanning probe lithography-a review

Fundamental aspects and state-of-the-art results of thermal scanning probe lithography (t-SPL) are reviewed here. t-SPL is an emerging direct-write nanolithography method with many unique properties which enable original or improved nano-patterning in application fields ranging from quantum technologies to material science. In particular, ultrafast and highly localized thermal processing of surfaces can be achieved through the sharp heated tip in t-SPL to generate high-resolution patterns. We investigate t-SPL as a means of generating three types of material interaction: removal, conversion, and addition. Each of these categories is illustrated with process parameters and application examples, as well as their respective opportunities and challenges. Our intention is to provide a knowledge base of t-SPL capabilities and current limitations and to guide nanoengineers to the best-fitting approach of t-SPL for their challenges in nanofabrication or material science. Many potential applications of nanoscale modifications with thermal probes still wait to be explored, in particular when one can utilize the inherently ultrahigh heating and cooling rates.

A 3-D NanoMagnetoElectrokinetic model for ultra-high precision assembly of ferromagnetic NWs using magnetic-field assisted dielectrophoresis

This report presents a three-dimensional (3-D) magnetoelectrokinetic model to investigate a new approach to magnetic-field assisted dielectrophoresis for ultra-high precision and parallel assembly of ferromagnetic Ni nanowires (NWs) on silicon chips. The underlying assembly methodology relies on a combination of electric and magnetic fields to manipulate single nanowires from a colloidal suspension and yield their assembly on top of electrodes with better than 25 nm precision. The electric fields and the resultant dielectrophoretic forces are generated through the use of patterned gold nanoelectrodes, and deliver long-range forces that attract NWs from farther regions of the workspace and bring them in proximity to the nanoelectrodes. Next, magnetic-fields generated by cobalt magnets, which are stacked on top of the gold nanoelectrodes at their center and pre-magnetized using external magnetic fields, deliver short range forces to capture the nanowires precisely on top of the nanomagnets. The 3-D NanoMagnetoElectrokinetic model, which is built using a finite element code in COMSOL software and with further computations in MATLAB, computes the trajectory and final deposition location as well as orientation for all possible starting locations of a Ni NW within the assembly workspace. The analysis reveals that magnetic-field assisted dielectrophoresis achieves ultra-high precision assembly of NWs on top of the cobalt nanomagnets from a 42% larger workspace volume as compared to pure dielectrophoresis and thereby, establishes the benefits of adding magnetic fields to the assembly workspace. Furthermore, this approach is combined with a strategy to confine the suspension within the reservoir that contains a high density of favorable NW starting locations to deliver high assembly yields for landing NWs on top of contacts that are only twice as wide as the NWs.
