Synthesis and Characterization of Monomeric Triarylbismuthine Oxide

The synthesis and isolation of a bismuth-based analogue of the venerable triphenylphosphine oxide (Ph3PO) has remained a chimera to synthetic chemists for many years, due to its predicted high reactivity and instability. Through the hydrolysis of a cationic fluorotriarylbismuthonium(V) salt, we report here the isolation of unique hydroxytriarylbismuth(V) complexes, which served as precursor for the formation of the elusive monomeric triarylbismuthine oxide Dipp3Bi=O. Combined spectroscopic, crystallographic and computational studies provided insight into the bonding situation of the first monomeric triorganobismuth oxide complex. The Dipp3Bi=O and Mes3BiO⋅LiBArF complex exhibits O-atom transfer reactivity, an uncommon reactivity feature for Ar3Pn=O.

Synthesis and characterization of chlorotriarylbismuthonium salts

This work reports the synthesis and structural study of a family of chlorotriarylbismuthonium salts. The abstraction of a chlorine atom with NaBArF from triarylbismuth dichloride species leads to monomeric and dimeric chlorotriarylbismuthonium species, which show a distinct behavior in solution and solid-state in comparison to their fluorotriarylbismuthonium analogues.

Cationic Triarylchlorostibonium Lewis Acids

Organopnictogen cations show promise as powerful, tunable main-group Lewis acid catalysts. The synthesis, solid-state structures, and reactivity of a series of weakly coordinated triarylchlorostibonium salts [Ar₃SbCl][B(C₆F₅)₄] (Ar = Ph, 3-FC₆H₄, 4-FC₆H₄, 3,5-F₂C₆H₃, 2,4,6-F₃C₆H₂) are reported. The cation in each adopts a tetrahedral coordination environment of antimony, with near complete separation from the anion. Structural, computational, and reactivity studies reveal that the Lewis acidity of [Ar₃SbCl]⁺ generally increases with increased fluorination of the Ar substituents, with a secondary quenching effect from para fluorination. [Ar₃SbCl]⁺ is reduced to Ar₃Sb in the presence of Et₃SiH, and the mechanism of this reaction has been modeled computationally. Preliminary studies demonstrate that they are useful catalysts for the dimerization of 1,1-diphenylethylene and the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene.

Mechanism of the Aryl-F Bond-Forming Step from Bi(V) Fluorides

In this article, we describe a combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation of the C(sp2)-F bond formation from neutral and cationic high-valent organobismuth(V) fluorides, featuring a dianionic bis-aryl sulfoximine ligand. An exhaustive assessment of the substitution pattern in the ligand, the sulfoximine, and the reactive aryl on neutral triarylbismuth(V) difluorides revealed that formation of dimeric structures in solution promotes facile Ar-F bond formation. Noteworthy, theoretical modeling of reductive elimination from neutral bismuth(V) difluorides agrees with the experimentally determined kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the addition of external fluoride sources leads to inactive octahedral anionic Bi(V) trifluoride salts, which decelerate reductive elimination. On the other hand, a parallel analysis for cationic bismuthonium fluorides revealed the crucial role of tetrafluoroborate anion as fluoride source. Both experimental and theoretical analyses conclude that C-F bond formation occurs through a low-energy five-membered transition-state pathway, where the F anion is delivered to a C(sp2) center, from a BF4 anion, reminiscent of the Balz-Schiemann reaction. The knowledge gathered throughout the investigation permitted a rational assessment of the key parameters of several ligands, identifying the simple sulfone-based ligand family as an improved system for the stoichiometric and catalytic fluorination of arylboronic acid derivatives.
