N–H Activation of Ammonia by [{M(μ-OMe)(cod)}2] (M = Ir, Rh) Complexes: A DFT Study

Theoretical Study of N-H σ-Bond Activation by Nickel(0) Complex: Reaction Mechanism, Electronic Processes, and Prediction of Better Ligand

N-H σ-bond activation of alkylamine by Ni(PCy₃) was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. When simple alkylamine NHMe₂ is a reactant, both concerted oxidative addition in Ni(PCy₃)(NHMe₂) and ligand-to-ligand H transfer reaction in Ni(PCy₃)(C₂H₄)(NHMe₂) are endergonic and need a high activation energy. When NH(Me)(Bs) (Bs = SO₂Ph, a model of tosyl group used in experiments) is a reactant, both reactions are exergonic and occur easily with a much smaller activation energy. The much larger reactivity of NH(Me)(Bs) than that of NHMe₂ results from the stronger Ni-N(Me)(Bs) bond than the Ni-NMe₂ bond and the presence of the Ni-O bonding interaction between the Bs group and the Ni atom in the product. N-Heterocyclic carbene, 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), is computationally predicted to be better than PCy₃ because the Ni-NMe₂ and Ni-N(Me)(Bs) bonds in the IPr complex are stronger, respectively, than those of the PCy₃ complex. The introduction of the electron-withdrawing Bs group to the N atom of amine and the use of IPr as a ligand are recommended for the N-H σ-bond activation. The C-H σ-bond activations of benzene via the oxidative addition and the ligand-to-ligand H transfer reaction were also investigated here for comparison with the N-H σ-bond activation. The differences between the C-H σ-bond activation of benzene and the N-H σ-bond activation of these amines are discussed in terms of the N-H, C-H, Ni-Ph, and Ni-NMe₂, and Ni-N(Me)(Bs) bond energies and back-donation to benzene from the Ni atom.

Rh(II)-Catalyzed C-H Alkylation of Benzylamines with Unactivated Alkenes: The Influence of Acid on Linear and Branch Selectivity

The Rh-catalyzed C-H alkylation of benzylamine derivatives with unactivated 1-alkenes that proceeds via a picolinamide directing group is reported. The crucial role of an acid additive in this transformation is confirmed. Aromatic acids showed high linear selectivity, and aliphatic acids provided branched alkylation products as the major product. The reaction has a broad scope for benzylamines and alkenes. Deuterium labeling experiments suggest that a Rh-carbene intermediate is involved in the case of linear product formation. A different reaction pathway, however, appears to be involved in the case of branched alkylation products, and this pathway also appeared to be a minor pathway in linear-selective reactions.

Rh(i)- and Rh(ii)-catalyzed C-H alkylation of benzylamines with alkenes and its application in flow chemistry

The Rh-catalyzed C–H alkylation of benzylamines with alkenes using a picolinamide derivative as a directing group is reported. Both Rh(i) and Rh(ii) complexes can be used as active catalysts for this transformation. In addition, a flow set up was designed to successfully mimic this process under flow conditions. Several examples are presented under flow conditions and it was confirmed that a flow process is advantageous over a batch process. Deuterium labelling experiments were performed to elucidate the mechanism of the reaction, and the results indicated a possible carbene mechanism for this C–H alkylation process.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Alkylation of C-H Bonds in Aromatic Amides with Non-activated 1-Alkenes: The Possible Generation of Carbene Intermediates from Alkenes

The alkylation of C-H bonds (hydroarylation) in aromatic amides with non-activated 1-alkenes using a rhodium catalyst and assisted by an 8-aminoquinoline directing group is reported. The addition of a carboxylic acid is crucial for the success of this reaction. The results of deuterium-labeling experiments indicate that one of deuterium atoms in the alkene is missing, suggesting that the reaction does not proceed through the commonly accepted mechanism for C-H alkylation reactions. Instead the reaction is proposed to proceed through a carbene mechanism. The carbene mechanism is also supported by preliminary DFT calculations.

Understanding the reaction mechanism of the oxidative addition of ammonia by (PXP)Ir(i) complexes: the role of the X group

An analysis of the electronic rearrangements for the oxidative addition of ammonia to a set of five representative (PXP)Ir pincer complexes (X = B, CH, O, N, SiH) is performed. We aim to understand the factors controlling the activation and reaction energies of this process by combining different theoretical strategies based on DFT calculations. Interestingly, complexes featuring higher activation barriers yield more exothermic reactions. The analysis of the reaction path using the bonding evolution theory shows that the main chemical events, N-H bond cleavage and Ir-H bond formation, take place before the transition structure is reached. Metal oxidation implies an electron density transfer from non-shared Ir pairs to the Ir-N bond. This decrement in the atomic charge of the metal provokes different effects in the ionic contribution of the Ir-X bonding depending on the nature of the X atom as shown by the interacting quantum atoms methodology.

Reactivity of the parent amido complexes of iridium with olefins: C-NH2 bond formation versus C-H activation

Herein we report on the different chemical reactivity displayed by two mononuclear terminal amido compounds depending on the nature of the coordinated diene. Hence, treatment of amido-bridged iridium complexes [{Ir(μ-NH₂)(tfbb)}₃] (1; tfbb = tetrafluorobenzobarrelene) with dppp (dppp = bis(diphenylphosphane)propane) leads to the rupture of the amido bridges forming the mononuclear terminal amido compound [Ir(NH₂)(dppp)(tfbb)] (3) in the first stage. On changing the reaction conditions, the formation of a C-NH₂ bond between the amido moiety and the coordinated diene is observed and a new dinuclear complex [{Ir(1,2-η²-4-κ-C₁₂H₈F₄N)(dppp)}₂(μ-dppp)] (4) has been isolated. On the contrary, the diiridium amido-bridged complex [{Ir(μ-NH₂)(cod)}₂] (2; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in the presence of dppb (dppb = bis(diphenylphosphane)butane) allows the isolation of a mononuclear complex [Ir(1,2,3-η³-6-κ-C₈H₁₀)H(dppb)] (5), as a consequence of the extrusion of ammonia. The monitoring of the reaction of 2 with dppb (and dppp) allowed us to detect terminal amido complexes [Ir(NH₂)(P-P)(cod)] (P-P = dppb (6), dppp (7)) in solution, as confirmed by an X-ray analysis of 7. Complex 7 was observed to evolve into hydrido species 5 at room temperature. DFT studies showed that C-H bond activation occurs through the deprotonation of one methylene fragment of the cod ligand by the highly basic terminal amido moiety instead of C-H oxidative addition to the Ir(i) center.

Rhodium-catalyzed regioselective addition of the ortho C-H bond in aromatic amides to the C-C double bond in α,β-unsaturated γ-lactones and dihydrofurans

An unprecedented C-H alkylation using α,β-unsaturated γ-lactones (butenolides) and dihydrofurans was achieved by the Rh-catalyzed reaction of benzamides. C-C bond formation occurs between the ortho-position of the benzamide derivative and the γ-position of the butenolide or the α-position of the dihydrofuran. The presence of an 8-aminoquinoline directing group is crucial for the success of the reaction. The results of deuterium labeling experiments indicate that the cleavage of the C-H bond is reversible and suggest that a migratory carbene insertion is involved as the key step.

Assessment of the Electronic Factors Determining the Thermodynamics of "Oxidative Addition" of C-H and N-H Bonds to Ir(I) Complexes

A study of electronic factors governing the thermodynamics of C-H and N-H bond addition to Ir(I) complexes was conducted. DFT calculations were performed on an extensive series of trans-(PH3)2IrXL complexes (L = NH3 and CO; X = various monodentate ligands) to parametrize the relative σ- and π-donating/withdrawing properties of the various ligands, X. Computed energies of oxidative addition of methane to a series of three- and four-coordinate Ir(I) complexes bearing an ancillary ligand, X, were correlated with the resulting (σ(X), π(X)) parameter set. Regression analysis indicates that the thermodynamics of addition of methane to trans-(PH3)2IrX are generally strongly disfavored by increased σ-donation from the ligand X, in contradiction to widely held views on oxidative addition. The trend for oxidative addition of methane to four-coordinate Ir(I) was closely related to that observed for the three-coordinate complexes, albeit slightly more complicated. The computational analysis was found to be consistent with the rates of reductive elimination of benzene from a series of isoelectronic Ir(III) phenyl hydride complexes, measured experimentally in this work and previously reported. Extending the analysis of ancillary ligand energetic effects to the oxidative addition of ammonia to three-coordinate Ir(I) complexes leads to the conclusion that increasing σ-donation by X also disfavors oxidative addition of N-H bonds to trans-(PH3)2IrX. However, coordination of NH3 to the Ir(I) center is disfavored even more strongly by increasing σ-donation by X, which explains why the few documented examples of H-NH2 oxidative addition to transition metals involve complexes with strongly σ-donating ligands situated trans to the site of addition. An orbital-based rationale for the observed results is presented.
