Abstract
The ground state and photoinduced mixed valence states (GSMV and PIMV, respectively) of a dinuclear (Dp4+) ruthenium(II) complex bearing 2,2'-bipyridine ancillary ligands and a 2,2':4',4'':2'',2'''-quaterpyridine (Lp) bridging ligand were investigated using femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry and density functional theory. It was shown that the electronic coupling between the transiently light-generated Ru(II) and Ru(III) centers is HDA ∼ 450 cm-1 in the PIMV state, whereas the electrochemically generated GSMV state showed HDA ∼ 0 cm-1, despite virtually identical Ru-Ru distances. This stemmed from the changes in dihedral angles between the two bpy moieties of Lp, estimated at 30° and 4° for the GSMV and PIMV states, respectively, consistent with a through-bond rather than a through-space mechanism. Electronic coupling can be turned on by using visible light excitation, making Dp4+ a competitive candidate for photoswitching applications. A novel strategy to design photoinduced charge transfer molecular switches is proposed.

Abstract
We theoretically study the dynamics of charge transfer induced by femtosecond laser-pulse excitation. Models involving coupled electronic states of symmetrically bridged organic mixed-valence molecules are investigated, where the motion proceeds along two reaction coordinates. Linear absorption spectra of two species that differ in the energetical position of the bridge, relative to acceptor and donor states, are determined and compared to experimental results. From the wave packet dynamics it emerges that relaxation dominates the charge transfer. This behavior is reflected in transient absorption spectra, which are obtained from a directional decomposition of the time-dependent polarization. Due to the nature of the coupled dynamics the extraction of the relevant contributions needs an extension of well-known techniques for the decomposition.

Abstract
Despite a diverse manifold of excited states available, it is generally accepted that the photoinduced reactivity of charge-transfer chromophores involves only the lowest-energy excited state. Shining a visible-light laser pulse on an aqueous solution of the chromophore-quencher [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(μNC)OsIII(CN)5]- assembly (tpy = 2,2';6,2''-terpyridine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), we prepared a mixture of two charge-transfer excited states with different wave-function symmetry. We were able to follow, in real time, how these states undergo separate electron-transfer reaction pathways. As a consequence, their lifetimes differ in 3 orders of magnitude. Implicit are energy barriers high enough to prevent internal conversion within early excited-state populations, shaping isolated electron-transfer channels in the excited-state potential energy surface. This is relevant not only for supramolecular donor/acceptor chemistry with restricted donor/acceptor relative orientations. These energy barriers provide a means to avoid chemical potential dissipation upon light absorption in any molecular energy conversion scheme, and our observations invite to explore wave-function symmetry-based strategies to engineer these barriers.

Abstract
This work reports on a series of polynuclear complexes containing a trinuclear Cu, Ag, or Au core in combination with the fac-isomer of the metalloligand [Ru(pypzH)3 ](PF6 )2 (pypzH=3-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazole). These (in case of the Ag and Au containing species) newly synthesized compounds of the general formula [{Ru(pypz)3 }2 M3 ](PF6 ) (2: M=Cu; 3: M=Ag; 4: M=Au) contain triple-stranded helical structures in which two ruthenium moieties are connected by three N-M-N (M=Cu, Ag, Au) bridges. In order to obtain a detailed description of the structure both in the electronic ground and excited states, extensive spectroscopic and quantum chemical calculations are applied. The equilateral coinage metal core triangle in the electronic ground state of 2-4 is distorted in the triplet state. Furthermore, the analyses offer a detailed description of electronic excitations. By using time-resolved IR spectroscopy from the microsecond down to the nanosecond regime, both the vibrational spectra and the lifetime of the lowest lying electronically excited triplet state can be determined. The lifetimes of these almost only non-radiative triplet states of 2-4 show an unusual effect in a way that the Au-containing complex 4 has a lifetime which is by more than a factor of five longer than in case of the Cu complex 2. Thus, the coinage metals have a significant effect on the electronically excited state, which is localized on a pypz ligand coordinated to the Ru atom indicating an unusual cooperative effect between two moieties of the complex.

Abstract
In this study, we report the generation of new mixed-valence (MV) subspecies with charge-separated (CS) characters from an unsymmetrical acceptor-donor-donor (A-D-D) triad. The triad was synthesized by attaching a dimesitylboryl group (A) to a D-D conjugate that consisted of triarylamine (NAr3) units. The MV radical cation, obtained by chemical oxidation of the triad, exhibited a strong intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) absorption derived from the bis(NAr3)•+ moiety in the near-IR region. The charge-separated MV (CSMV) state, obtained by photoexcitation of the triad, caused a blue shift in IVCT energy in the femtosecond transient absorption spectra, reflecting a bias of positive charge distributions to the D end site. This resulted from increased electron density at the A site and restructuring of the central D site from NAr3 to NAr2 sites. Interestingly, any shift in the IVCT energy that was caused by the polarity of the solvent was minimal, reflecting the unique characteristics of the CSMV state. These findings represent the first detailed analysis of the CSMV state, including a comparison with conventional MV states. Therefore, this work provides new insights into counterion-free MV systems and their applications in molecular devices.

Abstract
Quantum dynamical model calculations are performed on the optically induced electron transfer in a mixed-valence system interacting with different solvents. The simultaneously occurring processes of population transfer between electronic states and relaxation are studied in detail. Transient absorption traces, as recently recorded in our laboratory, are simulated, and the features of the spectra are related to the dynamics. The agreement with the experiment hints at the fact that the employed one-dimensional models catch the essentials of the photochemistry of the investigated systems and that they can be used for the interpretation of the transient absorption spectra. It is inferred that the ultrafast electron transfer processes take place on a sub-picosecond time scale and afterward relaxation occurs within several picoseconds.

Abstract
For decades, ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy has found its way into an increasing number of applications. It has become a vital technique to investigate energy conversion processes and charge transfer dynamics in optoelectronic systems such as solar cells and solar-driven photocatalytic applications. The understanding of charge transfer and photochemical reactions can help optimize and improve the performance of relevant devices with solar energy conversion processes. Here, the fundamental principles of photochemical and photophysical processes in photoinduced reactions, in which the fundamental charge carrier dynamic processes include interfacial electron transfer, singlet excitons, triplet excitons, excitons fission, and recombination, are reviewed. Transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy techniques provide a good understanding of the energy/electron transfer processes. These processes, including excited state generation and interfacial energy/electron transfer, are dominate constituents of solar energy conversion applications, for example, dye-sensitized solar cells and photocatalysis. An outlook for intrinsic electron/energy transfer dynamics via TA spectroscopic characterization is provided, establishing a foundation for the rational design of solar energy conversion devices.

Abstract
We introduce an atomistic, all-electron, black-box electronic structure code to simulate transient absorption (TA) spectra and apply it to simulate pyrazole and a GFP-chromophore derivative. The method is an application of OSCF2, our dissipative extension of time-dependent density functional theory. We compare our simulated spectra directly with recent ultrafast spectroscopic experiments. We identify features in the TA spectra to Pauli-blocking, which may be missed without a first-principles model. An important ingredient in this method is the stationary-TDDFT correction scheme recently put forward by Fischer, Govind, and Cramer that allows us to overcome a limitation of adiabatic TDDFT. We demonstrate that OSCF2 is able to reproduce the energies of bleaches and induced absorptions as well as the decay of the transient spectrum with only the molecular structure as input.
