Abstract
The selective installation of fluorine-containing groups into biologically relevant molecules has been used as a common strategy for the development of pharmaceutically active molecules. However, the selective incorporation of gem-difluoromethylene groups next to sterically demanding secondary and tertiary alkyl groups remains a challenge. Herein, we report the first cobalt-catalyzed regioselective difluoroalkylation of carboxylic acid salts. The reaction allows for the facile construction of various difluoroalkylated products in good yields tolerating a wide range of functionalities on either reaction partner. The potential of the method is illustrated by the late-stage functionalization of molecules of biological relevance. Mechanistic studies support the in situ formation of a cobalt(i) species and the intermediacy of difluoroalkyl radicals, thus suggesting a Co(i)/Co(ii)/Co(iii) catalytic cycle.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are unique Lewis basic catalysts that mediate various organic transformations by means of polarity reversal. Although the scope of research on two-electron reactions mediated by NHC catalysts has been expanding, the types of these reactions are limited by the inability of NHCs to engage sp3-electrophiles. However, the revival of photocatalysis has accelerated the development of free-radical chemistry, and combining photoredox catalysis and NHC catalysis to achieve NHC-mediated radical reactions under mild conditions could overcome the above-mentioned limitation. This review summarizes recent advances in combining photoredox and NHC catalysis, focusing on elucidation and exploration of mechanisms, with the aim of identifying challenges and opportunities to develop more types of catalytic models.

Abstract
Interaction of enol ethers enol acetates, enamides and enamines with fluorinated reagents may be considered as a reliable method for the synthesis of organofluorine compounds. While classic nucleophile/electrophile substitution or addition mechanisms cannot be realized for coupling of these components, their intrinsic reactivities are revealed with the aid of photoredox catalysis. A combination of these electron donating and accepting components provides a perfect balance needed for individual redox steps, which in some cases may proceed even without a photocatalyst. The same electronic factors also support the key C,C-bond forming event involving addition of fluorinated radical at the electron rich double bond.

Abstract
α-Heteroatom functionalization is a key strategy for C-C bond formation in organic synthesis, as exemplified by the addition of a nucleophile to electrophilic functional groups, such as iminium ions; oxocarbenium ions; and their sulfur analogues, sulfenium ions. We envisioned a photoredox-enabled radical Pummerer-type reaction realized through the single-electron oxidation of a sulfide. Following this oxidative event, α-deprotonation would afford α-thio radicals that participate in radical-radical coupling reactions with azolium-bound ketyl radicals, thereby accessing a commonly proposed mechanistic intermediate of the radical-radical coupling en route to functionalized additive Pummerer products. This system provides a complementary synthetic approach to highly functionalized sulfurous products, including modification of methionine residues in peptides, and beckons further exploration in C-C bond formations previously limited in the standard two-electron process.

Abstract
Site-selective trifluoromethylation of silyl dienol ethers derived from α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, ketones, and amides was achieved for the first time in the remote γ position. This photoredox catalyzed process is quite general to compounds bearing many functionalities and is applicable to the late-stage functionalization of biorelevant molecules. The use of S-perfluoroalkyl sulfoximines as ·RF radical sources enables the generalization of the reaction to other perfluoroalkyl groups (RF = CF2H, C4F9). Importantly, an unprecedented enantioselective C(sp3)-H perfluoroalkylation process is disclosed.

Abstract
The carbene and photocatalyst co-catalyzed radical coupling of acyl electrophile and a radical precursor is emerging as attractive method for ketone synthesis. However, previous reports mainly limited to prefunctionalized radical precursors and two-component coupling. Herein, an N-heterocyclic carbene and photocatalyst catalyzed decarboxylative radical coupling of carboxylic acids and acyl imidazoles is disclosed, in which the carboxylic acids are directly used as radical precursors. The acyl imidazoles could also be generated in situ by reaction of a carboxylic acid with CDI thus furnishing a formally decarboxylative coupling of two carboxylic acids. In addition, the reaction is successfully extended to three-component coupling by using alkene as a third coupling partner via a radical relay process. The mild conditions, operational simplicity, and use of carboxylic acids as the reacting partners make our method a powerful strategy for construction of complex ketones from readily available starting materials, and late-stage modification of natural products and medicines. The combination of carbene- and photocatalysis has enabled unorthodox routes to ketone syntheses, but usually requires engineered or activated substrates. Herein the authors present a carbene- and photocatalytic decarboxylative radical coupling of carboxylic acids and acyl imidazoles, in which the carboxylic acids are directly used as radical precursors.

Abstract
With the continued interest in the properties of the difluoromethyl (CF2H) group, small molecules with alkyl-CF2H motifs have gained increasing attention. However, concise and efficient synthetic protocols to achieve these structures are still urgently needed. Herein, we report a new acyldifluoromethylation of inert alkenes via a synergistic NHC-photoredox catalysis featuring broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
Inspired by the role of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in natural enzymatic processes, chemists have harnessed the umpolung (polarity reversal) reactivity of these reactive, Lewis basic species over the past few decades to construct key chemical bonds. While NHCs continue to play a role in two-electron transformations, their unique redox properties enable a variety of useful, stabilized radical species to be accessed via single-electron oxidation or reduction. As a result, their utility in synthesis has grown rapidly concurrent with the revival of radical chemistry, highlighted by their extensive use as reactive single-electron species in recent years.

Abstract
Herein, we reported an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and photo-co-catalyzed alkylacylation of olefins in the presence of the versatile synthon diazo ester, providing a new idea for transient radical generation with the only byproduct being N2. Particularly, this radical process employs traditional carbene precursor diazo esters as the radical source, which is the first case in NHC catalysis. Compared to the previous pathway that produces radicals with large discard fragments, this merged channel possesses great atom economy.

Abstract
Here, we report an unprecedented regioselective, intermolecular 1,2-cyanoalkylacylation of feedstock alkenes with readily available oxime esters and aldehydes by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis. The crux of this success is the exquisite control over the radical relay process by an NHC organocatalyst. This protocol offers a general platform for diversity-oriented synthesis of valuable ketonitriles under mild, transition-metal-free, and redox-neutral conditions and highlights its potential in the late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical architectures and natural products.
