Abstract
Herein, we report a visible light-induced synthesis of sulfenamides via the oxidative coupling of amines with thiols using O2 as an oxidant. The photoreaction was conducted under simple and mild conditions, without any photocatalysts, metals, or additives. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that a sulfur radical is generated through a single-electron transfer from an in situ-generated sulfur anion to O2 under visible light irradiation. This radical intermediate couples to form disulfide, which subsequently undergoes aminolysis to produce sulfenamides.

Abstract
The direct functionalization of C-H bonds has revolutionized the field of synthetic organic chemistry by enabling efficient and atom-economical modification of arenes by avoiding prefunctionalization. However, the inherent challenges of inertness and regioselectivity in different C-H bonds, particularly for distal positions, necessitate innovative approaches. In this aspect, photoredox catalysis by utilizing both transition metal and organic photocatalysts has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing these challenges under mild reaction conditions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in regioselective C-H functionalization in arenes via photocatalysis. Emphasizing the strategies for achieving ortho-, meta-, and para-selectivity, we explore the mechanistic insights, catalyst designs, and the novel methodologies that have expanded the scope of C-H bond functionalization. This discussion aims to offer valuable perspectives for advancing the field and developing more efficient and sustainable synthetic methodologies.

Abstract
The benzothiazole ring system has been recognised with crucial pharmacophoric features being present among various approved drugs and clinical and pre-clinical candidates. The medicinal importance of this privileged scaffold stimulated the interest of synthetic medicinal/ organic chemists for the synthesis of its derivatives due to their diverse biological applications. In most of the reports in the literature, benzothiazoles were synthesized by cyclocondensation of 2- aminothiophenol with either carboxylic acid and its derivatives or aldehydes. However, many of these procedures involve reaction conditions that are not in conformity with sustainable chemistry development. The negative impact of chemicals and their manufacturing processes on the environment, human health, and biodiversity raises safety concerns. On the other hand, the utilization of non-renewable energy sources, use of rare earth metals as catalysts, involvement of costly chemicals, prolonged reaction time at high temperatures, and considerable waste generation diminish the greener impact of these reaction methodologies and make them non-sustainable. In order to avoid such drawbacks of the non-sustainable practices in the synthesis of benzothiazoles, there have been continuous efforts to develop greener methodologies for the construction of this bioactive scaffold. This review aims to delve into the literature reports on the recent advancements in the development of greener methodologies for the synthesis of bioactive benzothiazoles.

Abstract
Oxidized carbon materials have abundant surface functional groups and customizable properties, making them an excellent platform for generating radicals. Unlike reactive oxygen species such as hydroxide or superoxide radicals that have been reported previously, oxidized carbon also produces stable carbon radicals under photo-irradiation. This has been confirmed through electron spin resonance. Among the various oxidized carbon materials synthesized, graphene oxide shows the largest number of carbon radicals when exposed to blue LED light. The light absorption capacity, high surface area, and unique structural characteristics of oxidized carbon materials offer a unique function for radical-mediated oxidative reactions.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a visible light-induced C(sp2)-H arylation method for quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and coumarins using iodonium ylides without the need for external photocatalysts. The protocol demonstrates a broad substrate scope, enabling the arylation of diverse heterocycles through a simple and mild procedure. Furthermore, the photochemical reaction showcases its applicability in the efficient synthesis of biologically active molecules. Computational investigations at the CASPT2//CASSCF/PCM level of theory revealed that the excited state of quinoxalin-2(1H)-one facilitates electron transfer from its π bond to the antibonding orbital of the C-I bond in the iodonium ylide, ultimately leading to the formation of an aryl radical, which subsequently participates in the C-H arylation process. In addition, our calculations reveal that during the single-electron transfer (SET) process, the C-I bond cleavage in iodonium ylide and new C-C bond formation between resultant aryl radical and cationic quinoxaline species take place in a concerned manner. This enables the arylation reaction to efficiently proceed along an energy-efficient route.

Abstract
Construction of medium-sized ring compounds remains challenging in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we describe the synthesis of medium-sized lactams via a photoinduced ring expansion of benzo-fused cyclic ketones using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a photocatalyst. The ring expansion protocol provided an efficient access to 8-10-membered lactams in good yields and displayed good tolerance to a range of functional groups. The mechanism studies revealed that the photochemical reaction proceeds via an intermediary of a nitrogen radical, which is generated through an oxidative hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a novel heterogeneous catalyst is employed for the visible light-mediated synthesis of the imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines via the oxidative amination of C-H bond at room temperature without the need for any additional solvent. Extensive characterization of the catalyst was performed using techniques such as FT-IR, PXRD, TGA, SEM and EDX analysis. The optimized conditions enabled the successful and expeditious conversion of a wide range of substrates to imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines in good yields; a notable advantage of this catalyst being recyclability, as it can be reused for up to five cycles without significant loss of activity. This feature makes it suitable for gram-scale synthesis of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines. Additionally, this approach offers several benefits from a green chemistry perspective as affirmed by its favorable green chemistry metrics (GCM), including low process mass intensity (PMI), low E-factor, high atom economy (AE), and good reaction mass efficiency (RME) relative to existing protocols. In addition, chemical yield (CY), mass intensity (MI), mass productivity (MP) and optimum efficiency were also calculated. This environmentally friendly method offers multiple advantages and represents a significant advancement in the synthesis of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines.

Abstract
An efficacious and mild KOtBu-promoted intramolecular C-S cross-coupling of ortho-iodothioanilides in conjunction with a catalytic quantity of phenanthroline as an additive has been described for the convenient synthesis of 2-substituted benzothiazoles. The methodology is suitable for attaining a wide variety of 2-alkyl- and 2-aryl-substituted benzothiazoles. Single-crystal XRD, DFT calculations, NMR, and UV studies suggest that halogen bonds between the units of ortho-iodothioanilides may assist in the electron transfer process.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a New Sustainable Photocatalyst for Textile Functionalization. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13152568. [PMID: 34372171 PMCID: PMC8348461 DOI: 10.3390/polym13152568] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/20/2021] [Revised: 07/29/2021] [Accepted: 07/29/2021] [Indexed: 01/14/2023] Open
Abstract
As a promising organic semiconducting material, polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted much attention due to its excellent optical and photoelectrochemical properties, thermal stability, chemical inertness, nontoxicity, abundance, and low cost. Its advantageous visible light-induced photocatalytic activity has already been beneficially used in the fields of environmental remediation, biological applications, healthcare, energy conversion and storage, and fuel production. Despite the recognized potential of g-C3N4, there is still a knowledge gap in the application of g-C3N4 in the field of textiles, with no published reviews on the g-C3N4-functionalization of textile materials. Therefore, this review article aims to provide a critical overview of recent advances in the surface and bulk modification of textile fibres by g-C3N4 and its composites to tailor photocatalytic self-cleaning, antibacterial, and flame retardant properties as well as to create a textile catalytic platform for water disinfection, the removal of various organic pollutants from water, and selective organic transformations. This paper highlights the possibilities of producing g-C3N4-functionalized textile substrates and suggests some future prospects for this research area.
